Over the last few months, since moving to Japan, I've been working on starting a new series: Made in Japan. Following the success of the original documentary I made back in 2019 ( • MADE IN JAPAN - Ishika... ), this series will focus on visiting various Shokunin (craftsmen) of all sorts of crafts here in Japan. I aim to showcase the attention to detail and quality that is so abundant throughout all of Japan, to express the art in the heart that I'm so passionate about.
This first film is close to my heart as it's based entirely in Osaka, my new home. Following the production of three household items in industrial scenarios, you can watch the manufacture of premium bath towels, a bespoke stainless steel sake cup and a hard-tempered iron frying pan.
As always, I'd highly recommend watching this on your TV for the full experience! It's been a joy to make this film and I'm excited to now finally put it out into the wild. Please share with your friends and family if you enjoy it!

The MADE IN JAPAN series always lets us know more about JAPAN
How It's Made, but much more relaxed. The style of your documentaries are next level. Now you're in Japan, I'm looking forward to your future documentaries. Thanks.

I used to love watching How it's Made during school holidays - I saw so many episodes growing up! Looking forward to making more, for sure!

@@joeallam Haha same here! The whole process of how something is made, or how a business works, where their ideas came from, their story etc. is so interesting and inspiring to watch. 😄
Great video. I travelled Japan for some 25 yrs for work and visited many a factory. Your video truly reflected the same passion, attention to detail and skill that I saw.
Came in for the video, went out with a list of things to look for when I travel to Japan in April 😅
I love the slower pace of your videos. On youtube and social media in general content tents to be very fast paced, which is fine but it's fantastic to have a contrast to that.
One solid great piece of work! I really love how you talk with passion about others people passion! Truthfully inspiring stories!

Thanks! I can really feel myself beaming as I'm filming these types of places. It's so enjoyable to witness first hand!
Beautiful documentary! Love your style of narration and overall approach to film-making. Excited to discover more about the Japanese craftsmanship through these series!
Another brilliant short film Joe; your care for capturing the beautiful story in everything is so special.

Thank you! Definitely looking to level up further with it this year 🙌
the perfect video to top off my evening of eating ramen and exploring Tokyo thank you sir !
Your cinematography is top-notch as always. I love your colour grading and camera angles, and of course, all the factory visits you present in this vid.
So pleased to see your next project I find the crafts amazing and fascinating…
A perfectly crafted documentary about craftsmanship in Japan. Your passion shines through these documentary videos and it’s a bliss to watch. You are crafting these beautiful videos as well as these hard-tempered frying pans. Thanks for sharing 🍻

Cheers Paul! Hoping I can keep making these and improve with each one 🙌
Amazing video man. Congrats and thanks for the content!
This content quality is on par of Japanese craftsmanship man 👏🏼
I like the mood as conveyed via the pictures, the cut and the soundtrack. Craftsmanship vs. industry. Care for the product and the process. Well done.

Thank you! Even though the machinery was quite intimidating, there was a delicate sense of craft in each place
WOW! Ok now I definitely have to go back to Osaka next year. It's been far too long. I love this series idea! My selfish suggestion: Document a soft vinyl figure company!

That’s a great idea of something to research - thanks!
That behind the scenes you previewed on Instagram pales in comparison to this final project. Fantastic work! The next few years of your adventures in Japan are going to be brilliant..!

So nice to see this! Was looking forward to another documentary style video
Fantastic work Joe! It’s very inspiring to see how seemingly simple products require so much attention to detail and craftsmanship. Same goes for the video as well, it feels like it got the same energy as the products you documented. Sublime simplicity.

Thanks Sam! So many steps along the way to each product. I’d love to see the design process for experimenting with new ideas as well!
Great work on this, love the laid back vibe. Good to hear some kansaiben too :) (Don't know if I mentioned but I did an exchange year at Osaka U of Foreign Studies so Osaka is dear to my heart) That Expo venue looks absolutely mad, I didn't have much interest but now I need to go.

Amazing video as always man
Great Series!
This is so cool. You are such an inspiration, Joe!!
Great video! 👌🏼
Very nice video!
I love this. Going to Japan this April and very excited about it.
Fascinating, thank you
Wow, this was really insightful! So much thought going into simple everyday items. Looking forward to seeing more of these documentaries!
Love the video. There’s so much to cover for Made in Japan just from Osaka. As a keen cyclist I love the frames, bike components and saddles. Kitchen knives in Sakai are amazing too.
Most enjoyable and informative.
Love this series. Can't wait to see more of the craftsmanship of Japan. These videos are really helping me breakup the unfathomable work that is a doctorate. Coincidentally, my work is featured around creativity and a key idea is "creativity as craft". Cheers Joe!
Love your work mate👏🏼 top draw as always
That's how the Fujifilm x100v was made 😂 Look at what they took from us with the x100vi! (Lol) xD
Hey Joe. I think there could be no better combination than you talking about quality in Japan. Your videos are always amazing and japanese quality is needless to say. As a youtuber, I know getting videos more watched and having more followers is key, but please don't prioritize quantity over quality. Like the japanese, keep up with the quality! Thank you for all the content you produce! ❤
Great video.
Hello Joe, very interesting video, your home, here its been the wettest feb for many years rivers always in flood, but still loving my fishing, and working hard on my channel, found my love and place, like you excited for the coming months, all the best...Clive.
Great video, and that Sake cup is awesome.

Please do more of these. Brilliant. Vending machines are a must. 😊
Thanks for this beautiful insight, Joe. I hope my country will host a pavillion at the expo and you can go visit for some chocolats and real beer ! Cheers
Stellar work, the understated mood and steady tempo really mirrors the subject of the video. All too often videos that I come across on matters like these are too over the top, too...KZread-ish. Keep being nobody but yourself, looking forward to the next one!
Love this! Can’t wait to visit any day now

Thanks man! Japan has so much to offer - enjoy!
Joe, I love your work and have followed you for years. This is nicely done except for one thing: FOR ME, the sound (VO) sounded terrible, muffled and imprecise. The subjects that were captured were plenty clear - though I don't speak japanese, subtitles were beautiful, thanks. I'll admit to having not great hearing, but you are always one of the best channels audio-wise I know of. What happened?
@joeallam

Thanks for the feedback and glad to hear the audio normally stands out for you - it’s something I put a lot of attention to. Unfortunately I’ve had a cold/nasal voice for a number of weeks now and actually recorded this voiceover a few times. Unfortunately deadlines and just a desire to not hold myself back any further resulted in a recording still having some remnants of the cold. It still sounded more than acceptable to me on the devices I usually test with, so I’m not sure how bad it might be on your end - sorry about that!
Really enjoyed this video and look forward to watching more hopefully. Are there any electric guitar manufacturers or luthiers in Osaka ?
Beautiful, all of it! Planning our trip for 2025/26 🎉
Joe a great video in fact one of your best, I had a chance to move from the UK to Japan 35 years ago even spent 4 years leaning to speak it, but I didn't follow the move though :( Best thing you and Elly have done and good luck to you both, Your photography not bad ether ha ha ha ......
Still your work, but you've done a great job differentiating it from your normal youtube fare. Familiar and polished
Love the video. I have to ask cause I might not be the only one asking. Are you changing the channel to do more of this or back to photography focused?
Hey Joe, where do your soundtracks come from? I saw the list but I was wondering if they are all from a specific subscription service or not. PS: you have been such an inspiration to start my own channel! 🙏
Facsinating.

let me cook lol
Are you and Elly still together??
