Madame Web is a 2024 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. Produced by Columbia Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment and TSG Entertainment, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the fourth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film was directed by S. J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker and the writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It stars Dakota Johnson in the title role, alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott. In the film, Cassie Webb (Johnson) confronts her past while trying to save three young women and their futures from Ezekiel Sims (Rahim).

That also messes the meaning of the original phrase. The original was about taking accountability for your own actions. That the theme behind all three SM movies made by Sam Raimi, Peter and the villains taking responsibility for their mistakes. The MW version flips the meaning. Now power is the reward for taking responsibility. It is all transactional. Don't be responsible because it is the right thing to do, be responsible because you'll be rewarded for it. It is this close to being a villain quote.

Here's my theory: I think this movie was originally a straight forward time travel thriller where a guy is hunting down the people who will one day kill him, inadvertently causing them to unite and kill him, but was then changed to be a Madam Web movie when it was pitched. It would explain why the narrative feels so disconnected from the spider-man elements, at least.

At first, I didn't have a problem with Madame Web being young because I thought Dakota Johnson was playing Julia Carpenter, a Spider-Woman who became the second Madame Web after the first one died. Julia was a lot more active in the field as Madame Web, and Dakota Johnson's outfit in the movie is clearly based off of her. When I saw Sydney Sweeney in Julia's Spider-Woman costume, THAT was when I realized Dakota Johnson was playing the original Madame Web and I knew the movie would fail. Having Dakota Johnson play Julia Carpenter would've solved SOME of the movie's problems. 🤦‍♂

7:50 Matt Smith recognized Morbius as obvious schlock. I'd say he knew what he was doing, which was having a good time and turning the ham up to 11. Jared Leto, on the other hand, I don't think was. He was treating it as a Very Serious movie. Even with Smith acting circles around him.

I feel like that "when you achieve great responsibility you achieve great power" line might have been a Freudian slip by the writers. The whole idea of Spiderman being given his powers that he must use them for good, these writers want this character to be given the opposite, the right to do something so that she can have the power. That's a slap in the face to anyone who has a cursory understanding of the real lore of these things.

Here's the icing on the cake: Originally, this was meant to tie-in with Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, but refused because he remembered what happened with TASM2. Rewrites and reshoots happened to make Madame Web connect to Tom Holland's Spider-Man (which makes sense since the actresses were convinced that this would eventually crossover with MCU). However, Sony realized they got the time period wrong and removed any references to Spider-Man whatsoever. I wonder why couldn't they just use Tom Holland's Spider-Man or just hire a script doctor for this universe. I'd be surprised if Sony's Marvel Universe ends up more successful than DCEU ever was.

It actually does directly reference Spiderman's birth, but it's 2 or 3 years off. Holland's version should be born in 2000 or 2001 (Endgame is 2018 and, according to Far From Home, happened halfway through his senior year in high school), but this takes place in 2003.
