My theory is that they are goading Disney into overpaying to get the Spider-Man rights back by putting out these awful movies. Like kidnappers sending fingers in the mail to drive up the ransom.

@@festo512not true to my understanding, they do not have the rights indefinitely, they have to use spider-man or a character associated with the license in a certain way and within a specific timeframe in order to retain the rights (they have a bundle of character rights associated with spider-man) That’s why there has mostly been only about a 3 year time span between any spider-man/spider character movie, the max timeframe they have to put a movie into production before the rights revert back is 5 years and 9 months

Well said, Venom was barely ok at best. Venom 2 looked bad and was. I never even wasted my time to watch Morbius. Kraven and Madame Web look bad. But it goes back further, Spider Man 2 was great, but 3 was bad. After that I reluctantly went to see The Amazing Spider-man, it was trash so I never went to see the 2nd one. Other than the animated stuff most of their comic book films are low quality.

@@skillz0122 The Amazing Spider-Man movies actually grew on me on rewatches. But it's almost like Sony is intentionally sabotaging their current spider-manless universe....just so they have an excuse to end their partnership with Marvel Studios at some point.

Think it says something that the most successful Sony Spider-Man films had the least amount of studio interference.

Makes no sense to me either. The same writers as Morbius? Who thought Morbius was going to be a good movie to begin with either? These character work good together and WITH Spider-Man. Not as separate movies! Isn’t it obvious by now?

It always had a CW look to me.

Honestley, fans from the first Venom movie can’t complain. This Sony scam was fucking clear and the box office success encouraged them to keep making crap

Easy answer: Sony owns the rights. They need to do “something” with these properties. They know people will see crap…and they’re simply making these films to cash grab. That’s really it. Look, Sony can be credited with creating four of the best Spider-Man movies (the first two Tobey Maguire films and those of Spider-Verse), which will be cherished by fans not only of Spider-Man but of superheroes in general. However, the reality is that they have also produced awful Spider-Man related movies, plain and simple. Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Venom 1 & 2, Morbius, and now Madame Web. They literally have a 50/50 chance of being good or not. I'm not even touching on the Tom Holland movies because those are produced in collaboration with Marvel. And Marvel delivered the best live-action Spider-Man movie in 20 years with No Way Home since Spider-Man 2.

If you ask me, it’s no secret since 2019, when Sony briefly part ways with Marvel, that Sony eventually wants to be independent from marvel. I’m cool with that, they have the potential to create their own Spider-Man universe that can last another decade. But they’re not gonna get any closer by making poorly thought out decisions like this.

Althogh im ok with MCU Spider-man( not so much with his supporting cast but still), i always felt that the Raimi trilogy and even the first Garfiel movie had more meat on the bones storywise, character wise, VFX etc, they really seemed better, buuuut, Sony right now is just a mess, at thid point i cant really dismiss the idea of the studio having ulterior motives like retaining rights, or whatever because its just ridiculous, if it wasnt for Venom 1 and Spiderverse, things may be different.

Sony should have allowed madam web be on Disney plus as a series they could have share her character like spiderman

Dakota Johnson is boring as hell. I want to see this movie but her presence is playing a big part in me considering skipping it.

I lost faith (and interest) the first 8 seconds of the trailer. Feels like it was written, directed and composed by amateur filmmakers. Almost the same for KTH. 👎

I’m sure it’ll be absolutely terrible but John will say he had fun with it and whatever

For me, it's frustrating because of the four actresses starring in this movie who are so talented, but are attached to this movie that the studio doesn't believe in and does no service to their resumés and bodies of work.

People have been complaining about this movie before the trailer dropped, i don't blame sony for holding out

Truth be told (no pun intended) I really enjoyed Dracula Untold, I thought it was a fine movie for what it was trying to be and a fairly solid vampire popcorn flick.

Dakota Johnson deserves a hit movie franchise but this is just hilarious and sad simultaneously. The trailer was bad and probably was a good reflection of the film.

So the CW is doing theatrical releases now? Highly irregular, but ok.

You know a studio (& movie theatres) don't have the confidence in a movie when a theatre chain offers 214 BONUS POINTS if you go and see it on Valentines Day! THAT'S $1 per point! Movie must not be selling good if they offer that!

Sony is out of touch, unfortunately. Throwing sh*t at a wall to see if it'll stick is a dangerous game to play when you're talking about potentially losing millions of dollars. What sucks is IP's are being ruined one movie at a time. Morbius could've been a great film.. and now if someone does come up with a great script, due to the previous failure, a Morbius movie won't see the light of day because it was already a longshot for what most consider a B-character / villain. Madame Web and potentially Kraven are headed that route, too. They got LUCKY with Venom.

Spider-Man isn’t in it. Who cares? Am I on crazy pills? Does Sony not know this?

The problem with these movies that Sony are making is that other then venom, no gives a shit about any of the spider-man villains/supporting characters outside of being in spider-man stories. It still baffles me that they’re making movies on Madame web and kraven when they have miles morales and spider-man 2099 right there. Miles is very well established as a character with the general public and spider-man 2099 would be extremely unique and can be sold purely on having spider-man in the title

Reminds me of how CW / WB treated Batman on TV. Let's make a shit ton of shows about everything in Gotham BUT Batman. The Police Dept, his rogues gallery, Alfred, Robin / Titans, other heroes such as Superman, Flash, Green Arrow, etc

I've been waiting for someone to do a "deep dive" into the movies coming out of Hollywood the last several years and find out exactly what the agenda is. It doesn't make sense and it's not just superhero movies either. They are intentionally making movies they KNOW are going to tank and I NEED to know why. What's the endgame here? Almost got that discussion here with John and the crew. Would love to hear your guys' thoughts someday. Take care!

It’s not very complicated, it’s a way to make Hollywood accounting moves - by nature the studios keep the actual finances of any given project as opaque as possible so they can make the numbers look better than they are for investors but worse than they are for people they need to pay

Why is no one holding these Studio Executives accountable for allowing this.

I honestly don't care to see this movie, I much rather see a live action Ghost-Spider/Spider-Gwen movie with Sydney Sweeney as Gwen Stacey than this film. Because at least Gwen has a fan base in the general audience.

First off, if you let another person's review of a movie stop you form checking it out yourself, then that movie is to good for you! The only person you should listen to is yourself, go see the movie for yourself, you might like!

Sony might as well just set their money on fire at this point. The only reason Venom seems to be at least somewhat working is because Tom Hardy is truly committed to the role, and he's gotten a story credit on the 2nd and 3rd films. As John says, at least he and Kelly Marcel are trying. They took what worked in the first film (the relationship between Venom and Eddie) and leaned into it. It also means that Sony is working with a competent writer on those films.

The Sony-verse is tarnishing Spidey’s good name.

We all know it's going to be bad. This doesn't come as a shock. And I don't think it'll be bad because of a female cast. I think it will be bad, because Sony has no clue what they're doing.

Gods of Egypt and Dracula Untold were not bad movies, though. ☹️

I didn't hate Gods of Egypt but I didn't love it either. My two biggest problems with that movie were the unlikable lead chracters and the whitewashing because they had white actors playing Egyptians.

Sony literally OWNS the Spider-Man license and yet Spider-Man is nowhere to be found in ANY of these crappy spin-offs. Mind blowing

Yeah, but they cut a deal with marvel letting them get movie rights and Sony keeps distribution. So they can't use spiderman in their film but still get a chunk of money from it. Alas, we're stuck with sub par movies

If they're intentionally withholding footage because "secrets", then their leadership/marketing team is massively out of touch with public sentiment for the movie. Either way, it's a major issue.

We all know it's not going to happen. After all, aside from Spider-Man, what else does Sony have? Ghostbusters, Bad Boys, Hotel Transylvania, Jumanji? Spider-Man is their biggest moneymaker and none of those other franchises are anywhere close to it. Jumanji is the closest thing but there hasn't been another Jumanji since 2019.

Well said and I couldn't agree more. I never had no interest in this movie or Kraven, and I never liked the idea of a Spider-Man spinoff universe, even though it might have some potential but their doing a lousy job with it especially after disastrous results with Morbius. If I remember right I think they did the same thing with Morbius. At least they have success with Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies along with Venom and Into the Spider-Verses with Miles Morales in which I love those movies, and I can't wait for Venom 3 and Beyond the Spider-Verse.

I'm sitting here wondering why yall had any interest in the first place.

I said it in John Rocha’s video a lot of times Dakota feels like she’s just reading her lines, but her delivery is usually emotionless like her delivery I’m like where is the passion, she lacks range, in a lot of her filmography she’s kinda playing the same character I do think her hindrance as an actress is the fact that she’s a nepo baby, what I mean by that is she’s been able to walk into room, & not really had to prove how good she can be, a lot of times I’m like you’re missing that hunger that you can see in Jlaw, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone (mentioning them cause they’re in the same age range, but you look at their filmography and you can kinda switch and see them acting in each others roles, but with Dakota there isn’t a lot of roles from the other actresses filmography that you’re like stick Dakota in it she would and be better, I think this is her big test as a “movie star” + superhero/comic book, which as off now isn’t looking great, but she needs like something to light up her ass cause right not she’s kinda just meandering. I’ll also mention idk if anyone else has watched Dakota Johnson interviews but something she tends to describe, is her characters as being smart, their mind is something that she has always described and it def makes me go like, girl do you have any more description if your character

It’s really not surprising, the reality is that outside of Venom: Let There Be Carnage Sony just does not make good live action Spider-Verse movies, this movie seemed like an interesting idea led by 3 boring as hell leads, like if they had more personality to them then maybe I’d have more interest in seeing this movie but their wooden acting just makes it seem like it’s gonna be an uninteresting bore, and even though I didn’t want this to be the case sadly between Morbius and now this Sony is really killing my enthusiasm when it comes to Kraven, now I’m starting to look at that movie and think “Y’know, even though I want it to be that movie is probably not actually gonna be good” I’ve been really crossing my fingers for that movie but I gotta tell you, I just can’t bring myself to believe that there’s a possibility that it’ll be good anymore

JC Chandor is the only reason I’m cautiously optimistic about Kraven. Good director

Sony loves making flops

I enjoyed "gods of egypt." I'll probably skip this movie though. Just like with the "flash" I was kind of looking forward to this movie up until I saw the trailer. I watch very few superhero movies because i think they are very generic, but I thought the premise sounded interesting. I would kind of make the argument that "the flash" was bad in pretty much every aspect of it's writing. I thought "the flash" was a very play it safe film when it should have been a big risk taker. If madame web ends up being a big risk taking film I might watch it.

I noped out of this series after the first Venom movie. I don’t know how anyone is surprised this is as bad as the last few.

I have to imagine that these writers were already working on Madam Web before Morbius bombed? I doubt they intentionally sought out guys who just failed them for another go. I feel like I remember that in the lead up to Morbius Sony was pretty bullish on it so not surprising they'd get those guys on the next thing and at a certain point it would have just been too expensive to shift gears? Maybe they thought it would end up the kind of dumb fun as Venom as opposed to just being dumb? Plus John talks about the acting being wooden but that's not really the writer's fault. Maybe Sony really liked the script but it just didn't translate? I dunno, lol.

You shouldve mentioned how the marketing changed to having the spider woman talking about the movie. Instead of showing another trailer. At this point they are banking on sydney sweeny star power. Know a few people going just for her.

They likely made a Madame Web movie just to included a bunch of characters for Intellectual Property reasons. Wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to bolster their IP before pitching to sell the "Spiderman" movies rights back to Marvel/Disney.

My hope is that this crashes so bad that it crushes this apparent argument that Sony is insisting for the story of Spiderman 4 and Marvel takes the lead again. Sony just doesn't have good intentions for the Spiderman brand outside of Spiderverse animated.

Sony keeps making poor decisions when it comes to the movies. They keep making these unnecessary movies so that they would keep the Spider-man movie rights. At this point they aren't even trying to make a good movie they will just get a random character from the Spider-man comics and make a movie about them that aren't well-known or popular. Movies like Morbius and Madame web can hurt Kraven at the box office. They don't want to see the Kraven movie because of those movies. Maybe Venom 3 as well since they announced that they will reboot Venom as an r rated flim. Which they should have done in the first place which the first movie expectally Venom 2 since it had carnage. Because they will reboot Venom a lot of people aren't going to see this flim because what will be the point to watch Venom 3 since they are going to reboot it and not continue the franchise with Tom Hardy.
