Mackie Mixer Trim Pot Noise - Quick-ish Fix!

Very disappointing! After two months the trim/gain knobs on my Mackie mixer were noisy, and only getting worse. This quick fix from guitar repairer (Dave's World of Fun Stuff) has sorted it for now. Be sure to do 100+ full sweeps and good luck.

I have a 1995 Mackie 1604 which I will never get rid of. It was built when Mackie was located in Washington state, USA. They were a fledgling company started by a local Seattle musician who was tired of using crappy commercial gear. He built the originals to survive time and persist in clean quality signaling and reliability. ~I bought my PROFX8 5 years ago and in less than a year it began the deteriorization of the pots. clean em , wiggle em. They have a life and death cycle of mystery popping in and out as they see fit.~ I bought a Focusrite 6i6 after that and tried using it hybrid style with my Mackie 1604 since, of course, the 1995 mixer has no USB connectivity. That works,,,, not too great either. I am curious about the new Korg/Mackie hybrid boards but simply cannot rely on Mackie built in China enough to risk the investment. Sad , such a great company to begin with, felt compelled to cash in on Chinese marketing rather than maintain the renowned quality of their once highly esteemed Hardware. My 1995 1604 performs flawlessly to this day.

You know what? I was disappointed because the desk is great for the money, just what all the advances in technology should be able to offer - otherwise what's the point? I'm sure they could build it to last, for not much more in price, but then how would they sell the next 'update'? I see the problem, and I guess we all have to change our expectations. The planet surely can't tolerate such behaviour for much longer... well, the planet can, but it won't be hospitable for us!

@@AntonBrowne that's absolutely correct. I think the Industrial powers that be build a PC or even a Mac to last about two iterations of basic upgrades and then they crap out or the drivers are no longer supported(ie my 2006 Yamaha Motif ES7.. Meanwhile ,the studios that can afford them are using U47 microphones that were designed by the NAZI's in WW2. And, they still sound freeking amazing. I'd like to get a reliable PC that I know will run Thunderbolt 4, but with windows 11 coming and all the added "popular" junk they put in for the average consumer pc what will I need in terms of components to survive for 10 years. I'm old enough (71) that I may have a few years of recording and playing and I don't want to waste it changing gears every 4 or 5 years. HEY BIDEN,, let's talk about some good old consumer protection before we let the Oligarchs take over. Peace Bro! I'll be starting those 100 tweeks per POT today.

Having said all that. Twisting knobs 100 each did resolve some issue so I am grateful for that 🙏. When one is the only working entity in a studio every little thing that goes wrong becomes an inspiration killer. Moving forward just the same.

Thank you!! My problem was with the monitor knobs. I checked out a few other videos that addressed the problem and they all required you to open the unit and spray electronic cleaner directly into the pots, which I completely expected I had to do... and dreaded. This was such an easy fix. I'm hoping it lasts, but it is doesn't, it's still a simple short term fix. btw... great voice!!

You could also pull the knob off, and spray some contact cleaner down in there. I had to do that to my Yamaha mg16/4. By the way, I. enjoy your channel very much.

What happen is is dust and dirt accumulates down inside the control. By turning the knobs back and forth is a temporary fix. When more dust and dirt drops down inside affecting the controls by making static noises a better suggestion is to clean out the mixing board using air pressure from a can and better yet take the cover off the mixing board and use 100% cleaning alcohol for the longer solution.

Thanks for your comment. I have decades old gear that is used live and still works fine. This desk started having problems after a year of sitting on a desk - covered up when not in use. Taking the cover off is not so easy and I might cause more damage than I fix! Taking the knobs off and trying to spray down the shaft seems to work. I have done the troublesome trim pots, only another 14 pots to go. Why is this needed after only a year... progress, I guess?

I bought a new Mackie MIX8 and the MAIN MIX pot was noisy right out of the box! I got a new replacement that was perfect out of the box, but that lasted only a few weeks before the PHONES level and the Channel 5/6 pots became noisy. WTF, Mackie! If I spin the pots a few times the noise goes away, but only for a short while. I've been tempted to open it up and spray some Deoxit D5 in all the pots, but I'll try the 100 sweeps method first.

I have that same mixer and noticed some faint high pitch squealing almost like a feedback loop when i bring up the fx channel. I wont even have anything plugged into it except headphones. Its very annoying but luckily i just use the thing for zero latency monitor to add a little reverb to monitor with so im not recording anything from it but i wondered if youve experienced the same at all?

I have just tested mine and all I get is additional hiss when maxing all effects controls. I think you will have to do some tedious testing before concluding that it's faulty - lights, computers, phones, cables (though you say nothing is plugged in) etc. Good luck.

It's also my observation: Pots in my 44 year old Fender ProReverb and 42 year old Vibrolux still work fine (and I never changed them), the ones in my 20 year old SWR bass amp crackle like hell - maybe this has to do with the bigger size of these old Fender pots, compared to the tiny ones that SWR used 20 years later, soldered directly to the PCB - and ironically, that makes these harder to replace, too...

I love Mackie Sound. I don’t like their cheapskate Electronics. The ribbon cables in their DL32Rr digital mixer corrode and needs reseating every now and the. But being out and about doing Sound, you don’t want malfunctioning equipment..

  • @vidworxsfx

This is a huge problem these days and it exists because of the really cheap pots they use today absolute garbage, example I have a few Mackie mixers even older ones and a slightly newer one and they have issues and are very scratchy, some don't even fade the volume completely. I have a UREI 1620 over 25 years old it has probably some of the best pots ever made black beauty's they still feel the same and not one of its 9 fader pots has any static at all, they all fade to infinity just as when they were new, unlike the junk they put in today's mixers that if your lucky the pot will not be too off between the left and the right channels as you decrease the volume. I have found most to be off slightly. While I know they cant put the best pots in these inexpensive mixers I get that, but common they need to at least use something with enough quality to price ratio that it lasts for a while. A year is not acceptable at all in my opin, when as you said you have older gear and it does not have this issue. Even more expensive stuff is just missing the build quality that once was, O how I miss those days when you could buy something and expect it to last.

  • @AntonBrowne

Call me a sceptic, but I find it difficult to believe that reliable pots that were made in their millions over many decades, are now too expensive to provide in modern equipment! We have made so many advances in materials and manufacturing that I would imagine modern pots would be cheap as chips, more accurate, and last 50 years + unless... you don't want them to.

  • @vidworxsfx

    @vidworxsfx

@@AntonBrowne Yes and no modern pots are cheap but that's it there just cheap with little to no quality. While sure we have advanced a lot in how we make these things a really top notch stereo pot will always cost more as its not as easy to make one where the left and right have very close tolerances I am sure you have noticed, as most of these cost effective pots are off between the left and the right as you fade out, in comparison to better ones where the left and right channels are nearly identical. So I really think they just don't want to use the better pots as crazy as it may sound I think this is where they are cutting costs and its really as you see not a place to skimp. In fact if I saw a mixer and it said we use only Sealed Alps Pots that's the one I would surly pay extra for. Not sure what Mackie is using in these non USA built models but its obviously not good quality if you had issues that quickly.
