Agreed. I just wish a group like the Collings Foundation could resurrect an old Convair F-106B Delta Dart from the dead, but alas, the US government doesn't like civilians owning military aircraft. From what I remember, tge only reason they have an F-100F and F-4D is because they acquired both from foreign nations (South Korea (I think) for the F-4D, the Netherlands for the F-100F)

@@Tigershark_3082 I mean, its not a government conspiracy. They don't make them anymore and they have not made them for decades now, they just aren't for sale because the ones that are airworthy are legitimate artifacts that take much time and effort to restore. This is all on top of the insane operating costs: A WW2 warbird can cost thousands of dollars an hour in fuel, maintenance and custom-machined parts. A supersonic cold war fighter jet is bigger, gulps down absurd amounts of fuel for even short flights and would still require similarly scarce specialist knowledge and custom-made parts for engines and an airframe that are no longer manufactured.
@jamesharding3459

@@lolroflroflcakes Conspiracy implies ill-intent. The reality is that when [pick any cold-war aircraft] was being retired, it was a legitimate security concern to allow the technical data and resources to maintain them to persist, so most of the data and parts were disposed of.
My Grandfather was a Soviet Air Force officer, and used to fly on Mig-17 and Mig-21s. RIP Grandad
@c.s.oneill2079

My regrets for your loss and respect for your grandfather. Though I was on the other side, I and those with me recognized and respected the formidability of the Soviet Union and its armed forces. He was willing to fight and die for what he believed in and that, again, demands respect. The best days of my military career were after the Wall came down, when we were airdropping food baskets onto each others' flight decks, and it seemed like there was a chance that Russia would eventually join NATO. Maybe someday. But, Koteki, it's great that you remember your grandfather like this. Gosh, I would be so happy if my grandchildren did. Not that I have grandchildren yet. ;-) Oh!, and I almost forgot to say that when I was little, maybe 12 or 14, I built a Revell polystyrene model of the Mig-21 and painted it gunmetal silver. My brother built an F-4D Phantom in the SE Asia camouflage paint scheme and we would dogfights out in the side yard of our house. No radio controlled flight or anything like that, just carrying the planes around and using our imaginations with a lot of unrealistic maneuvers on my part. I remember my brother complaining to me about that.

Flying the Mig-21 in DCS and listening to this, I can smell the hydraulic fluid and ozone from the inverters.
In Bagram, Afghanistan, 2001 there were still a few MiG 21 aircraft from the Soviet invasion, 1980-88. An “airframes tech” mate of mine got into one and stripped out what instruments he could. He gave me one. I asked one of our pilots later on if he knew what it was. Apparently a “Turn and Slip Indicator” and a “Rate of Climb Indicator packed into the same dial face. He’d trained on similar instruments on a Chipmunk training aircraft that was made in 1946. On return to the UK I mounted it onto an oak plinth with two plaques stating what it was and where it was found and gave it to my dad for his 65th Birthday. He grew up in SE Asia in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and the MiG 21 was the Comunist/Soviet “Airborne Menace” of the era. 22years later it’s still on display in his home.

Was on a carrier when this came out. We were still flying the A-7 back then. Odd how the plot line is still relevant.
I never thought that this MiG-21 was older that me. The first official flight - 68 years and 9 days ago...I did not know that the MiG-21 holds the distinction of being the most widely produced fighter jet in the modern era. Introduced in 1959, it has served in over 50 countries. According to claims it had a much higher kill ratio in Vietnam War than American fighter jets. Someone send me a MiG-21. I just want to put it in my back yard...lol
So, while it isn't a perfect conversion due to altitude and atmospheric conditions, mach one (supersonic speed) translates to about 760 miles per hour across the ground. Therefore, in the time it took for this excellent mix to play out completely, that MiG-21 would have traveled about 730 miles, assuming a straight course. For context, that's approximately the distance between Cleveland and Minneapolis.

"This silver tube floating in the sky was, as it were, my brain, and its immobility the mode of my spirit. The brain was no longer protected by unyielding bone, but had become permeable, like a sponge floating on water. The inner world and the outer world had invaded each other, had become completely interchangeable. This simple realm of cloud, sea, and setting sun was a majestic panorama, such as I had never seen before, of my own inner world. At the same time, every event that occurred within me had slipped the fetters of mind and emotion, becoming great letters freely inscribed across the heavens." - Sun and Steel - Mishima, Yukio.

I don't believe there are any anime that feature the Mig-25. However, Area 88 (the Anime OVA series this GIF was taken from) had a very wide variety of different aircraft used: F-5A Freedom Fighters, A-4 Skyhawks, F-5E Tiger IIs, an F-105D Thunderchief, and F-104G Starfighter (for like half-a-second), F-4E Phantom IIs, Mig-27K Flogger D(eeze nuts, gotteem)s, Mig-21s (as pictured here), an F-20A Tigershark, an F-14A Tomcat, an A-10A Thunderbolt II, AV-8A Harriers, and the IAI Kfir C.2 I feel like either the Tigershark or Kfir C.2 would fit really well, it's just a matter of finding a segment of the animation that would make a perfectly-looping GIF. I *think* there may be a scene or two with the Kfir flying straight, but I KNOW there's a really good scene during the beginning dogfight with three Kfirs firing off their Sidewinders, then turning away. I think that a good scene to make into a GIF for the Tigershark would be the canyon run part, since it's a close-up shot of the pilot with some insanely clean animation with the reflections on the canopy. Hot damn, I went on a serious rant here...
