M88 Hercules Vehicles For Ukraine | How The US Plans To Keep Abrams Tanks Secrets From Russia

As part of the recent $400 million aid package to Kyiv, the United States has included 8 M88 Hercules recovery vehicles, in addition to the 31 Abrams main battle tanks that it is sending. These M88A2 Hercules vehicles, which are the standard heavy recovery vehicles of the US Army, are expected to help keep the Abrams tanks out of the hands of Russia, according to experts. The Hercules will be used to tow disabled Abrams tanks to safety, ensuring that they remain secure. In addition to its primary function of towing disabled tanks, the M88 Hercules also supports tanks by retrieving them from mud, obstacles, and uprighting overturned tanks.

The Hercules and its crew cannot operate alone in recovering a tank in a battlefield without infantry support, a company or a platoon of troops will seriously be needed, because without them providing security, the High Probability, both the Hercules and the Abrams will either be captured or destroyed.

The toughest thing about the Abrams is definitely gonna be it's fuel consumption and bridging. The tank just weighs so much compared to the Leopard 2, Challenger 2, T-72 and T-64. It's interesting to note what Poland has decided to do with it's Abrams as it's replacing it's fleet of PT-91 Twardy and Leopard 2's with K2's and Abrams. Poland has earmarked units station in the north near Kaliningrad to receive the Abrams, where there are fewer rivers and shorter supply lines. The Polish Army is moving it's Leopard 2's to the south near Ukraine and these will be replaced by K2 Black Panthers. I think the Abrams probably offers the most protection or is at least the safest tank out of those that Ukraine and Poland currently have because the Abrams stores all it's ammo in the turret behind blast doors and blow-out panels. In comparison, the Leopard 2 still has ammo stored in the chassis below the turret, which is why you see pictures of Turkish Leopard 2's with blown off turrets. The Abrams storage of ammo protects the crew and it's more easily recovered and repaired where as a Leopard 2 or T-72 with a blown off turrets is just scrap metal. I think the best decision would to keep the Abrams either near Kyiv or in reserve behind the front lines. The Abrams will then rush forward to defeat any potential Russian breakthrough. This way the Abrams can't outrun it's supply lines and bridging won't be as much as an issue. The Leopard 1's and Leopard 2's will then be used for Ukrainian offensives to retake land.

The M88A2 Hercules is a VERY needed tool when operating the M1A2SEPv3 in the field. Just the fact that the U.S. is sending EIGHT M88A2's to support 31 Abrams Main Battle Tanks says a LOT about the issues the turbine engine that powers the Abrams has. The upgrades to the Abrams electronic warfare systems makes it a very deadly platform. But myself, I think the powerplant should be converted to a more reliable diesel engine. Being a heavy equipment mechanic for most of my life, I do understand the need for the large horsepower that the turbine provides for a 75 TON armored vehicle. But a large diesel engine could be modified to supply CLOSE to that kind of power. The Detroit Diesel 8V92 powers many of the large/heavy vehicles in the U.S. Army fleet. I'm sure it can be upgraded to an extent, and still be reliable. Or use another manufacturer's engine.

Hard to find a 1500hp diesel that is as small as the turbine that is in use. There 2 candidates but one of them is only rated for 1,000hp which means the tank will be a lot slower and will have trouble going up some hills.

When using wire cable, you need to establish a safety zone longer than the cable deployed. If you did the calculation wrong, that cable can whip back with enough authority to cut someone in two. Back in 1964/65, we had the M88 tracked recovery vehicle. If you did the arithmetic wrong and the cable let go, we were told we had four inches of armor between us and that cable.

The United States delivered to the Soviet Union from October 1, 1941, to May 31, 1945, the following: 427,284 trucks, 13,303 combat vehicles, 35,170 motorcycles, 2,328 ordnance service vehicles, 2,670,371 tons of petroleum products (gasoline and oil) or 57.8 percent of the aviation fuel including nearly 90 percent of high-octane fuel used,[35] 4,478,116 tons of foodstuffs (canned meats, sugar, flour, salt, etc.), 1,911 steam locomotives, 66 diesel locomotives, 9,920 flat cars, 1,000 dump cars, 120 tank cars, and 35 heavy machinery cars. Provided ordnance goods (ammunition, artillery shells, mines, assorted explosives) amounted to 53 percent of total domestic consumption.[35] One item typical of many was a tire plant that was lifted bodily from the Ford Company's River Rouge Plant and transferred to the USSR. The 1947 money value of the supplies and services amounted to about $11 billion.[65] This is about $50 billion in todays dollars adjusted for inflation. Lend/Lease for Ukraine is $800 Billion, or roughly 16x the credit line the USSR had in WW2. This war is just starting.

I worked around the older M88A1s and they were monsters. They were built on the hull of an M60 tank. This is part of the reason that Washington was so nervous about sending the Abrams to Ukraine. One former general said it is a "niche system, with an almost bespoke logistics tail." In other words, if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it. It can run on a variety of fuels, but they like to use a kind of toned down jet fuel in it. It needs lots of TLC. But if you give it what it needs and use it as its developers intended, you will not be disappointed.

The Abrams will be used in a defensive capacity mostly for their strategic cities because no tank battalion will knowingly engage on the Abrams. Now, no equipment is invincible but USA military will be and have been training Ukrainians and mercenaries aligned. Russia knows they cannot capture anything further then what they have already. It's just too much money, time and risk. The Leopards will be a more offensive engaging in my opinion

The Russians have been pretty near incapable of recovering their own tanks, hence the huge numbers of tanks Ukraine has received from the Russians as a "Goodwill" gesture. Let alone having the resources to grab something like an Abrams tank. However those M88 recovery vehicles will be massively useful to the Ukrainians if they get them before the Abrams so they can practice using them to recover their own and Russian tanks from the battlefield. I am sure in a few months time the US can donate another handful of these vehicles if needs be as the Ukrainians may lose 1 or 2 getting familiar with them.
