For me it's Skynyrd first, Allman Brothers second.

I used to have a taped interview many years ago with Allen Collins talking about how Steve Gaines came to the band. Apparently, Steve had a sister, Cassie Gaines, who was a backup singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd . Allen said "Cassie kept tellin' us ' Yeah, I got a brother that plays guitar.' and you know how that is, we were all like 'Oh yeah, that's great' but one night Steve came out and jammed with us on T for Texas and everybody's jaw, like....dropped to the floor. Steve Gaines was our man."

From what I've read, the roadies were told if Steve was terrible, to unplug his amp. They didn't! Search YT for Steve Gaines and you'll see he had a following before he joined LS. By the time of the crash, Ronnie had given some of the vocals over to Steve and LS added a few of Steve's personal songs to the final album. He was adding a new dimension to the band.

@@suecook1326 Corect. It was soundman Kevin Elson that said, "This guy doesn't suck. He can play". With that, Mr. Gaines was a staple in the band. He was a real breath of fresh air.

When Ronnie Van Zant died in that plane crash southern rock was never the same, I still to this day tear up thinking about October 20th 1977 a part of me died that day as well.

Billy Powell was a roadie until they needed a piano player in a pinch. Then he was in the band. You need to check out Call Me The Breeze from this concert if you haven't already. Great work as always!

My fav too since I was a little girl. I saw them in 76 when I was 10. The most unselfish performers I've ever seen. Not one of them ever had a problem with the other having the spotlight & no problems working together cohesively! It was about the music...not egos!! God I miss them so much 😥

Even Ronnie was amazed at how good a guitar gunslinger Steve Gaines was. The whole band kills it on this song and this whole concert. R.I.P.

Freebird this concert was the best. They went out on the tongue. They were told not to. That, I believe, is what ticked off the Stones. Check it out if you haven't. Incredible performance. Much better than the Oakland one everyone shows.

Drama, this concert was at Knebworth in England, They opened up for the Rolling Stones, this is the Stones Stage, every band was INSTRUCTED NOT to go out on the Tounge of the stage , this is for Mick Jagger only, during the concert Ronnie Van Zant told the band , we are here today, and we are going to do what we want, He told the Band i am going out on the Tounge, when i do follow me, this scene is not in this song, but, he did and the Guitar players followed him, Mick Jagger Was Pissed off, Mick said who do these people think they are, Hello Mick , we are Lynyrrd Skynyrd, And we are here to play our asses of, This is the day that Skynyrd Blew the Stones off of thier own Stage, they played better than the Stones, this was Historical here, True Grit, thanks for the video Drama, Keep on Rockin Man, Peace and Love, Cousin Figel

@@bnjslzr It was Freebird...and Ronnie pushed Allan, then Gary, then Stevie & Leon tried to join but his cord want long enough & jerked him back. The guys didn't really want to go out there but Ronnie didn't give a damn about Mick's instructions! lol

Ronnie was smiling cause of the way Steve Gaines,in blue shirt,was playing. Steve had only been with Skynyrd bout 2 months when was this was taped

You told the truth about SKYNYRD being better than the Stones...especially that day! Skynyrd was simply on 🔥!!!

I was 26 when this song came out, it was a summertime party song! On the beach, with a bonfire, drinking Red Mountain and Boone's Hill, and passin' the doobie around. Our feet kicking sand while we danced and let out rebel yells to this song. Great memories! ✌️😎

Saw them in September, 1976 at an outdoor show in Nashville. They were part of a 4-band card that had the Atlanta Rhythm Section opening the show. Wet Willie with Jimmy Hall and the boys played second. Third came Florida's guitar army The Outlaws, and Skynyrd closed the show with an incredible set. Ironically, new to the Skynyrd line-up that night was an obscure and at the time still relatively unknown (except in Oklahoma and the Kansas City area) guitarist by the name of Steve Gaines who had only very recently just joined the band full time a couple of months earlier. I've seen Skynyrd before their October, 1977 plane crash and I've also seen the Stones live. In my humble opinion, if this incarnation of Skynyrd hadn't met with tragedy, stayed together, and gotten a chance for longevity, they would've been America's version of the Stones. Only better lyrically and a ton better musically by a street.

Lynyrd Skynyrd took over where the Allman Brothers left off.

One of the greatest live performance bands that God ever put on this planet. IMO. 😁👍🔥👍🔥👍🔥👍🔥👍🔥

Drama, for a Rock and Roll band to take a song like this written in the 1920;s and turn it into this here is just Spectacular, Ronnie Had a Vision into Music Drama, you have a ear for good Music, Peace , Cousin Figel

Hell, Skynyrd is southern rock! I'm 59 and growing up they were the band. Epic!

I've never seen a live Stones performance that impressed me TBH. And I've seen them live.

If you haven't done it yet, give "Call Me the Breeze" a listen.

Skynyrd rocked Angel Stadium so hard they started flashing warnings on the scoreboard lights for the upper tiers to sit down because you could see the whole top section just rock and up and down it was amazing! I'd been to at least 10 shows there and I had never seen them flash that warning sign before or since...

You would be mad too if you had to follow this band. What were the Stones thinking?

The Stones were mad because Skynyrd scorched the stage!

Southern Boomers had the best music to grow on.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was awesome. First concert I ever attended, 1976 at 15 years old at the Capital Centre Largo Maryland. This band they just didn't have off nights, they were always good.

Artimus Pyle, the drummer has formed his own LS tribute band in Florida, due to money issues with the crash survivors and Ronnie's wife. His band is the Artimus Pyle Band. They do a great job of keeping LS alive. He was the one who went for help when the plane crashed into a rural swamp like area. Gary Rossington, the guitarist in the dark blue shirt accused Artimus of running away from fright but Aritmus, a former Marine and with witnesses has disputed that. Gary was the band member they wrote That Smell about. Gary and Artimus are the only ones left from this lineup.

Even the playboy bunnies and Penthouse pets from the 70's are all grandmas by now

Two Things 1) Leon tosses the cigarette when its about to get serious and 2) The look on your face at 9:41 when Allen plays one of my favorite guitar licks of all time is priceless !

The reason the Stones where mad because during Free Bird Ronnie had the guitarists walk out on the tongue(part of the stage that extends out) and the Rolling Stones didn't let anyone walk out on the tongue, Mick Jagger was really pissed that they walked on it and the Skynyrd blew them away.

Steve brought new energy to the band, could sing,play and write. Shame we were deprived of what could have been.

That guitarist Steve Gaines had just joined the band replacing Ed King. His sister was already a backup singer in the band. That smile on Ronnie's face says it all. It was him thinking to himself, "Yeah, I made the right choice". Sadly it was those three that died in the plane crash.

The Greatest American Band of All Time, imo. They could do it all.

It was the Freebird performance from this concert because they were told not to go out on the long end of the stage but when the solo started Ronnie led the guitarists down anyways. I know you did freebird already but I would love to see you react to that performance! It was so much better than the Oakland show and Allen made good use of that big stage! Great reaction

Steve Gaines was 25 or 26 and had not been with them long at all. Ronnie was smiling because they were still learning how good he was. Yes his sister Cassie was one of the honkettes.

Lynyrd Skynyrd at Winterland...best times of my life...saw them play this and Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones from The Outlaws came out and jammed with them...

This was recorded at the Knebworth Festival in England in the summer of 1976 and the "rule" was that no one but the Rolling Stones were supposed to go out on the tongue of the stage. Mr. Van Zant wasn't one to step down from a challenge, hence he instructed the band members to go down the tongue. At one point. Mr. Wilkeson's cord stops him from going any further. Supposedly Mick Jagger confronted Mr. Van Zant backstage afterward and Mr. Van Zant didn't back down. He was known as "Mighty Mouse" and "Mr. Badass" back in his hometown in Jacksonville, FL. He was not one to be messed with, and in the word of Mr. Rossington, "He was a bad ass. He could cut you or creep ya....". When Steve Gaines (in the blue shirt playing guitar) joined the band and was auditioning soundman Kevin Elson was told, "If he sucks, just cut him off". Mr. Elson reported back, "This guy doesn't suck. He can play". Alas, Mr. Gaines would die in 1977 along with his sister Cassie, Mr. Van Zant, Dean Kilpatrick and the copilot and pilot in the 1977 plane crash. This was a series of songs done by Jimmie Rodgers called the "Blue Yodels" done from 1927 to 1933 when Mr. Rodgers died. I often say about this one, "Gimme a "T" for "Terrific"".

I love how Ronnie gave Steve free reign on this and especially on slide since that was usually Gary's domain. Steve showed what an all around badass guitar player he was. Ronnie watching him play and smiling was so great. He's thinking, yeah, this is exactly what we needed. The story goes Ronnie was going to turn the reins over to Steve eventually and let him front the band while he wrote songs and managed things.

I was fortunate enough to see this tour live in Anaheim California, Angels Stadium. after Foreigner came out, REO Speedwagon came out, then Ted Nugent came out, then Lynyrd Skynyrd came out as the sun was going down me and my buddy we rushed the stage we got about 20 feet from Ronnie Van Zant, it was a great night I could go on forever talking about what a great night. and they were my favorite band at that time, shortly after that the tragic accident happened..

They on tour with The Rolling Stones the stage had the big tongue 👅 on it the stones logo the only thing that they were told not to do is go on to that part of the stage and do you think that they listened hell no they didn’t lol Skynryd was (is) killer one of my all time favorite bands for sure y’all ha ha 😎 man Steve Gaines was a bad boy on the guitar then when he slid that thing it sang

I was raised on groups/artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker Band, Eagles, Bob Seger, etc.... It is awesome to see them again through your eyes! Would love to see your reaction to Bob Seger...Turn the Page, Night Moves and Against the Wind would be a good start!

BILLY POWELL WAS THE BEST PIANIST IN THE BUSINESS. He was a roadie for them in the early 70s. Joined the band once they heard him on the keys during lunch break, while they were recording at Muscle Shoals. What you should realize is Ed King had quit the band. Cassie Gaines (female vocalist) told them her little brother Stevie could play guitar, so they were trying him out. You can see by the smile on Ronnies face that he thought Stevie Gaines was gonna work out fine.

Steve Gaines became Ronnie's closest confidant, and Alan Collins best friend. Steve was writing songs and sharing the mike that last year. Many projected that Steven would reach or surpass Duane Allman in another 3 years.

I don’t know if someone already said it but during Free Bird I believe was the song they were on when Members of the band walked out onto The Rolling Stones tongue which they were specifically told not to do my the stones. That was Ronnie Van Zant saying we just kicked yer ass in yer own stadium.

When the Stones did songs like 'Brown Sugar' or 'Honky Tonk Woman', they were referencing something, talking about an idea, some notion they had. Not the direct experience. When Skynyrd wrote and performed 'Gimme Three Steps', the very person who took those three steps and saved his ^ss was the one singing it. 'That's when the water hit the floor'- that was Ronnie p^ssing himself. Jagger was hanging out with Andy Warhol and coked up jet setters. He wasn't 'cutting the rug at a place called the Jug'. That's why when Skynyrd came and played Knebworth they overwhelmed with their authenticity and their hard-earned virtuosity. Keith Richard NEVER played with the kind of precision AND feel that Rossington wrung out of his Gibson live on this T for Texas. Never.

If you listen to another live version recorded at the Fox theater in Atlanta from the One More From the Road album. They were raising money to keep the Fox open. Three nights of southern rock heaven. Ronnie introduces Steve Gaines to the world on that album. Please listen to the acoustic style song, Things goin on"' from their first album to hear their political views on Washington. They also played Working for MCA after being signed or transferred from another smaller label. This song was played in front of the record label execs letting them know, you best not screw us over on our share of the money. Classic!!

Southern Rock bands always gave respect to their bands and showcased them every chance they got. Allman Brothers were great at that as well. This is originally a country song. They do it 100% better. I'm a Tennessee girl. Loved going to their concerts. I got so many sunburns going to their Southern outdoor concerts. Them and all the other Southern Rock bands. I'd hitchhike to see them if I had to. Edit: I am now 68. I'm an old hippie. Lol

I agree, Skynyrd is southern rock. Having said that, even God (Clapton) was in awe of Duane Allman. But hey, Ronnie up there barefoot, laughing and dancing, nothing is better. Great channel. I'm a new subscriber as right now.

I remember the Who had the same problem following Skynyrd. They took Skynyrd on their first tour and they tried to blow them off the stage every time
