LUXURIOUS Old Flora Pocket Knife Restoration

Restoration of a RARE and LUXURIOUS Flora Pocket knife from Germany to mirror finish. This pocket knife is rarely sold. According to the shape and origin it was used by gardeners for pruning and grafting.
ABOUT THE FLORA POCKET KNIFE
This is a RARE OLD pocket knife produced in Dresden, Germany. Inscriptions on the blade are FLORA, WERK, DRESDEN. The pocket knife is solid in hand but with a worn look. The steel blade is slightly rusty and has surface stains. Another smaller blade is made out of brass. They are often made in plastic but this one is a more luxurious version. The wooden covers are in good condition except discoloration and worn out look. Liners and pins are also made out of brass. I am not sure how old this pocket knife is, but my best guess is around 60’s. Norwegians are proud owners of gardens and it is natural that this beautiful knife ended up here. I had a lot of luck to find it and restore it. If you know more about this pocket knife, please leave a comment below!
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by spraying the blades with multi-spray. Waited for a couple of minutes and I easily pulled out both blades. With the help of a small hammer and puncher I managed to dismantle this pocket knife without any trouble. Parts were submerged in a 35% vinegar solution for a few hours, grinded on a wet stone wheel, sanded by hand and polished afterwards.
I sanded discolored surface areas from wooden covers with 180 - 240 grit. This time I used any Tung oil, beeswax polish and I polished the wooden covers.
In this video I used brass pins different in thickness as the original ones were. Assemble the pocket knife, hammer it and file the brass pins.

    I don't why but I feel like sharing this. I have been on a job hunt after graduating in February last year. Today is finally my first day at work. After one day of training, all I have in mind was your advice to keep things organized. I don't know how, but watching your videos really is inspiring. And now, after long hours, I am finally able to sit, relax and enjoy your video, which of course, is again a great one! 😄😄😄

    Wow, congratulations on a new job! That is great to hear! I wish you best of luck! You got this! To be good at organizing things, you have to think three steps ahead all the time. It is not easy but when you get a habit it will be extremely easy. My secret is: 1. you do a certain job-project; 2.after that you do assessment on how well you performed; 3. find your mistakes and why you made them; 4. most important - correction. See how you can improve those areas where you made mistakes and next time on a job you will be more efficient and organized. And remember this as a cycle. Even after 10-20 years on a job, do the same repeated steps: job, performance, mistakes, correction... Hope this can help you because this principle you can apply on any aspect of life 😉

    Looks awesome Boris! You really need to teach me how to make knives that sharp, I can sometimes make them shave arm hair, but it never cuts paper like that! p.s. I noticed the time stamps were not as detailed as normal, I hope this is just because you ran out of time as I usually find the timestamps to be quite informative.

  • @FFD_Restorations

    @FFD_Restorations

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sweet, thanks a lot my friend! It is quite simple but it takes a lot of time. I start wet sanding with 120 grit > 240 > 400 > 800 > 1200 grit and afterwards I polish the blade and the edge and finish it on a leather strap. Approximately takes me 90 minutes. The quality of steel determines how long it will stay sharp. If you manage to cut your arm hair is great, you are almost there, you need just a bit more. It seems you still have that burr. Leather strap should do the trick to get rid of that burr. Thank you so much for the feedback on timestamps. I did purposely less detailed timestamps to see any difference in viewers retention. Well done for noticing the difference! Cheers Grant 🍻

    Nice restoration. I like that you restore the old wood components when possible. This may be a silly question, but what is the purpose of the small blade on this knife? It didn’t look like it was sharpened and appeared to too rounded a tip for a screw driver (sort of liked like the tip of an oyster knife).

    Thank you Richard. That is a good question. This pocket knife is specially designed for gardeners mostly for pruning and grafting. The longer blade is used to cut T on a tree bark and smaller brass blade is to gently separate the bark from a trunk. After that the gardener has enough room to place a new plant-twig with a bud. So, the purpose is not to cut, just to help in separating those layers during grafting 😉

  • @mihi6348
    @mihi63483 жыл бұрын

    It is a budding knife with a brass barklifter. Most commonly used for budgrafting apple trees and roses. There is still a factory in Germany making those knives, Tina-Messerfabrik. I couldn't find Flora knives but I could find something about the Flora, the saxon association of botany and horticulture in Dresden. You can find it on Wikipedia as "Sächsische Gesellschaft für Botanik und Gartenbau". It could be a private label item by this association, but this is wild guessing.

  • @mihi6348

    @mihi6348

    There was a factory in Dresden. So the links to Flora association is improbable. The knife could have been made by this tool maker: Flora-Werk Dennhardt & Neumann Dresden
