Luther is definitely legendary and a household name (especially in the black community). I would say he achieved a pretty great level of stardom. That's "Mr. Velvet" himself after all. You heard that buttery smooth voice..hence the nickname. Two of the BEST TONES in music, collaborated and created magic 😍 Also, I feel you when MC transitions! It's just so beautiful and satisfying 😌. What you're referring to is her airy falsetto--her headvoice is less airy (Listen to her "When you believe " performance with Whitney on Oprah's show for example to hear the difference).

Luther was already a legend by the time Mariah made her debut. I'm disappointed in your elders. They let you down severely for you to not already be more familiar with Luther Vandross than you are.
