The brilliance of Lumen is its real time feedback. It does something to you to see that you are getting a 4 or 5 after pizza night. So, yes, we do know most of the stuff. However, we don't do it because the negative feedback is not immediate. To me Lumen is more of a behavioral change device. And can help us stay on track.

The behavioral change support is what interests me the most. I'm changing my lifestyle and relationship with exercise and food. Any dopamine hit I can get from meeting small goals goes a long way for positive reinforcement.

I agree. Along those same lines, I have been surprised by my numbers, though. When I wake up and feel full, I am usually a 1 (fat burning mode). When I wake up and I'm really hungry? I'm a 4. So it has really help me recalibrate my hunger and recognize that when I feel my tummy rumbling, I'm wrong. That's likely my insulin response lowering or something, but it is NOT hunger. That's been very helpful for me.

The subscription thing was what killed this for me. I was interested in buying the device, but don't want to pay a subscription fee for a bunch of stuff I'm not going to use. I was looking for a device that took readings, and let me track them, much like my smart scale does. If I were interested in meal plans and suggestions and all that other stuff, then I can subscribe for those things, but let me buy a device that I can just track data with.

ivanjakinov, I completely understand. Paying a subscription can really eat into your wallet. Like I talked about in the video, it would be great if they had a "monthly" subscription to just do a check up every once in a while instead of having to subscribe for 6 months minimum. A smart scale might be the ultimate way to go?

There’s a Black Friday sale right now, 350 for a year. Just bought it. The way I justified it was that if I stuck with it and lost the weight it’s worth every penny. Especially for long term health. I want to be healthy for my family. So let’s see.

  • @waltcorey5115

I just bought one and, after much thought went with the year plan. Why? 1)it was a reduced price like on sale.. $100 is $100! 2) the per/month price significantly lower. I'm in a situation where I've got a protracted program in my future. Sure, early on its "easy" to adhere to a strict regiment. By 7+months the variance increases. When this happens it'd be nice to know how/why I went off the rails. Ivan, you're way wrong on cal in/c a l out. Most ppl remotely interested in Lunem are not in remotely the same physical conditioning you're in. There are just two variables, there are three, being insulin sensitivity. The ONLY way one can burn fat is if there virtually zero insulin present. What happens with people with insulin resistance is their metabolism slows. They can't lose weight. You don't appear to suffer that. Ppl can google insulin resistance. Do I anticipate renewing after a year...Likely not. I do appreciate you taking the time and interest to review. I am, after all, in the return/refund window. It hasn't even shipped yet. Thank you!

Thank you for the honest and candid overview of your experience. I see a lot of people complaining about the 6-month commitment and agree they should offer flexibility to veterans but for everyone else a minimum commitment is ideal. We are such a microwave generation we want what we want here and now and the reality is people adopt refined habits at a different rate so 6 months is likely really beneficial to more than I think we would imagine. Also, they offer 100% money back guarantee within 30-days. That’s a sufficient amount of time, imo, to access if this would fit into one’s lifestyle.

KIm, thanks. I hope they take our comments to heart, and hopefully others, and come up with a "monthly" pricing alternative. I am guessing that since they are a newer company, they probably need longer commitments from new users in order to redeem their initial investment and get profitable. If so, I understand their model. Maybe we see this down the line?

so I came across this and was very excited. even went to my Dr. and he had said make sure I do my reviews. Now a person would ask why are you even going to the doctor with this. Well in the last 5 years I've had 3 hernia surgeries. And each of them have contained 3 to 9 spots where they've had to be repaired. As a result I've gained much weight. Had to stop working cause my job was part of the problem. And then the doctor told me I couldn't work out except walk. So I went from a typical 180 ish. To tipping the scales at over 300. When I seen the device after trying several diets in the last couple years. Desperately wanting to get back to where I was and now hitting my fifties. I thought here we go this will help the me know what I'm doing wrong. With all the comments I read and your review it's very sad to know that there are people out there that are just trying to make money On devices that won't even help you much... So now I'm back to walking twice A-day, Re doing how I eat things again. And getting ready for my 4th surgery because this time the mesh didn't work.... Our body does most of its fat burning overnight while we are sleeping, because of insulin, you cannot lose or use body fat if your insulin levels are up. It is absolutely impossible to have your body burn stored fat cells as energy if you have high insulin, this is why intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting work so well because you drop the insulin down your body uses up all of its glucose and you start creating ketones and your body starts running on body fat as fuel

Thank you for doing this review! I have been interested in Lumen from a "tech geek wanting to get healthy" point of view for awhile now, but the Lumen has always seemed too expensive for what it advertises itself to be. It is good to know they now offer meal plans! That is something I always have problems with myself, as I enjoy healthy eating, but hate some of the long complicated meals so many health influencers recommend. Once Lumen gets to a lower price point I do see myself trying it, however I would use it more for accountability. I know I eat too many carbs, but always seem to have an excuse for it. Lumen may help shut some of that down. The "I've been good most of the week" mentality would be in hard numbers rather than emotional feelings. If you read this far, thanks again. Have a great day!

This was a great review and I agree with so much of it. Hard for me to go to my phone first thing in the morning, It always says I'm burning carbs, even with calorie deficit, so I guess it's forcing me to realize I really need to get back to intermittent fasting. I bought it because at 49 I was finding suddenly my body will not budge on weight loss and it just wants to hold at 171-181 range. Not joking...nothing working...they've tested my hormones, all the blood work a girl could ask for, tried calorie deficit, tried calorie increase, tried macro variations and exercise variations. My body literally just wants to hold on to every calorie. Anyway, it does confirm that my body just hangs in carb burning mode at all times for some reason. I usually blow 4-5 with a rare 3. The cons...as an asthmatic person, it makes me re-blow ALL THE TIME. And, I don't have the greatest eyesight so I have asked them to make it available on a computer. It's a pain in the rear to read the little app print, have to enlarge font just for one app or have to find my glasses to access the app each time. haha I have addressed all this with the company and they tell me they aren't going to be changing from app based only biz any time too and that after a certain amount of time they can adjust my account so I don't have to blow as long of a breath. So, I don't really recommend this for people who have near sight vision issues or asthma. Got so annoying I stopped using it. I might give it another try now that I know I'm not alone in my frustrations. I have a few months left on the membership.

Angel 616, thanks for sharing your experience. I found that fasting was the only way I could get into fat burn in the morning. Best of luck to you and keep it going!

Terrific review, very interesting! I am also not a fan of subscriptions, do we really need another one, and a morning routine that doesn’t include looking at my phone immediately is important to me. Also, for me, manually logging my daily caloric intake would become cumbersome past a week or two. I’m a Chef and have studied a bit in nutrition- I think inherently we know that reducing your caloric intake and exercising will make you lose weight and stay healthy, but in the modern age we look to devices to tell us these things. It’s an interesting idea, I’d rather just buy the device and not have the other stuff, but I could see that paying for six months of that would be unnecessary, at least for me. I was committed to IF for a good year, it worked great until it didn’t. Then it was extremely detrimental to my health. I’ve since gone back to a more simple, straightforward approach; eat whole foods, reduce my sugar intake, sleep 7-8 hours/night and exercise 5-6 days a week. If you read this far, cheers, I enjoy your videos!

Don't eat too much, eat healthy organic "well-balanced" meals, and make sure you get enough sleep every night. Easy to say, I know, harder to do.

This is an interesting and somewhat unique take on Lumen. I am a Lumen user so I want to share mine. I lost a bunch of weight on a low-carb/low-fat plan and then I went off the rails somewhat gained some back and decided to try Lumen. Lumen was less per year than the previous plan was per month so that was great. It is a little more work because I have to figure out how to meet my macros but over time that became easier. I eat a little over my BMR according to my macro count and am losing slow and steady. I do fast for 16 hours a day. I'm never hungry and I can eat most things and be within my plan if I plan for it. I think fasting has more effect than calorie deficit as far as your lumen number goes. I also think a monthly check-in on lumen would be pointless because the plan is carb cycling but it doesn't raise your carbs if you're burning them in the morning and you could blow a 2 one day and a 5 another so once a month wouldn't really tell you much. A monthly plan would be nice I guess but monthly plans would cost more if you continued with it than the yearly so YMMV. It has for me helped me be more conscious of living a healthy lifestyle without buying someone's food or giving up any food permanently unless I just want to. It also helps me keep my portions under control and see how exercise works with my metabolism (when it benefits me to work out fasted and when it's better to fuel up). It's all in what you value. I value the feedback and having something to keep me more conscious of how what I am putting in and out (energy-wise).

What I do want to know is if I am in carb burning or fat burning modes and the times that happens. I take noticed of it telling me whether I should have a low or medium carb day or a high carb day... and I follow that loosely. Never once has it made me think about food all day long though.... it just guides me as to what my metabolism is currently doing and when its ok to have those extra carbs and when its not ok. I bought a year unfortunately. TLDR: It's a no. Follow macros and still blow 4. Lumen can't tell me why. It can ask me questions as to what happened but it does absolutely zero correlation even with data it has (like how many carbs I have). I am using for performance and notice no difference at all. No changes. 3rd month in. Also my metabolic flexibility has gone *DOWN* since I started. I'm not here to do *worse*! It is incredibly *demotivating* to do all the macros right and blow a 4. And it simply offers up nothing as to why. You have to do that yourself. It cannot even suggest to you (it asks questions that you have to answer rather than using data it *could* import if it wanted too) that it might be exercise, or sleep, or maybe you didn't hit your carb macro (which it knows if you enter that data). It's a mystery. Unlike my Whoop and Oura and Garmin who are busy correlating data and telling me what might be affecting me. My CGM gives far better data, real time, accurate by medical standards (which Lumen is more correlating directionality of score as far as data I can access). So overall I am not renewing. This thing is almost six hundred dollars a year- nah man. Use a CGM for 3 months and get a good lab work done. YMMV.

I am heavily indoctrinated into the Apple sheep ecosystem... that being said, it syncs with Apple Health, which syncs to Apple Fitness, Healthmate (Withings weight scale, Blood Pressure Monitor, etc.). what is annoying about blowing into the device so many times a day? I've read a few comments that people returned it because of this. how much time does it actually take to blow and get the reading? Also wondering if you used any other app to track your calories?

  • @FitnessFinance4u

Renee, good question. The annoying part was the feeling of being attached to an electronic device the whole day. I'm not sure about you, but sometimes I'll leave my mobile phone at home all day long so I don't feel tethered to it, and it gives me a feeling of freedom. Having to blow into a device 5 times a day feels like a bit of an addiction (maybe that's too bold of a statement?). But, I did realize I only had to blow into it twice a day to get the info I needed (once in the morning, and once before I went to bed at night). That was much better. It only takes about 5 minutes to blow into the device, but it seems like it takes longer for some reason...ha! Thanks for the review, but I think you missed the point of the device. Burning carbs or fat is metabolic flexibility. Fasting and a calorie deficit are not the same thing (we know the latter reduces your metabolism over time--not good). You can fast and still eat a full day of calories. It would have helped if you used it on an Intermittent Fasting regimen. This is just another way of measuring ketones from the CO2 side (more CO2 means less Ketones).

And what arevtge results? Do you feel more energy? More well balanced mentally? Less ups and downs or tired after a workout? Better recovery time? Right now for me.. adding another $270 for app use to a grocery bill plus the cost of the device just doesn't seem reasonable. Maybe the costs will come down in price.. And maybe there general over all knowledge can be shared about when the body generally burns what... In the morning I am guessing fat before you break your fast with breakfast. But who knows...maybe it can show or people can learn and share some valuable insights.

"Most people" will absolutely benefit from this device because it makes caloric intake and tracking "easy". It uses your body’s physiology to track the changes, rather than requiring someone to manually write everything down. People who are uneducated about health and fitness will benefit “the most” from an educational and automatic tracking device such as this one.

For example, lots of veggies and clean foods without preservatives. (search the internet for caloric calculators that help you determine your daily caloric intake for "weight maintenance" ). If I wanted to lose a few pounds, I would cut that intake by 200 or so calories a day. Fasting helped as well because I didn't eat as many meals, thus less calories, every day. I felt pretty good fasting once I got used to it. I hope that helped?

Just found your review of the lumen, I'm waiting for my lument to arrive. Although I'm an exerciser and former Certified Group Exercise Instructor, I battled type 2 diabetes but controlled glucose numbers through Exercise but still had damage of eyes and kidneys. The Pandemic came and I no longer took or taught classes so I went to lower intensity exercuse and weight & resistance training using hand held weights. That switch did the trick and my tyoe 2 reversed over the following 2yrs including up to the present. Google Scholar and Research became my friend. The science is out there, has been out there for at least 100 plus years on metabolism but just not picked up by the medical establishment. I purchased The Lumen because I can't get a Doctor to Perscription for a CGM, Continously Glucose Monitor, to track my spijes of glucose after eating because I'm not taking insulin and have very damaging uncontrolled diabetes. I believe currently the monthly cost for a CGM us around $35USD a month from the research I've done. For me the cost/benefit analysis makes a years subscription a Blessing in helping to maintain my reversal of type 2, normalized Blood Pressure and not having any more eye surgery for damaged blood vessels ot future kidney dialysis.

Reid, I was not on any sort of a Keto diet when I was fasting and the Lumen said I was burning fat. I was just doing the 16:8 fast for about 5 days straight. I was eating pretty clean though. But I’m not sure if I was in Ketosis or not?

@@FitnessFinance4u Thanks for the follow up. I find when I limit my carb intake (not doing keto) my body goes into ketos rather quickly. I'm going to hive Lumen a try. We'll see what happens. Keep up the great reviews!

I’m no nutritionist, but I just kept eating as healthy as I could and ate my normal diet. The weight continued to drop on me.

All in all, it's too expensive for me, especially since I'm only just hearing about it or it's fairly new on the market.

I’m glad you said, “twin sisters,” because on their website it doesn’t mention that. I just thought they were lesbians that kind of look alike. 🤭

Basically INTERMITTENT FASTING of at least 16:8 will naturally keep you in the "2" range on Lumen. No need to subscribe to Lumen.... just fast

I can't believe this!!! Why this silly background music? I had to stop the video to be sure it is not coming from something else, but no...pitty to write that but I can't get you serious enough for your test--anyway, I watched to the end and in fact, I do like your honest presentation, so I'll put the thumb up( and if you can't do presentations without backing tracks, at least put their volume a. bit down

Would've bought it. Unfortunately for the genuis who created this product, I instinctively walk away from all subscription models. Failure on their part.

They used to have a 3 month subscription which I thought was ok. That's gone, unfortunately.
