You're the man!!! My wife and I used 2 x 4s to hammer down on the control arm, and out popped the ball joints. I knew there was a reason to keep the scrap wood around. Awesome video!

I have an 05 Dakota and live in the northeast so rusted bolts are just part of my life. When doing repairs I’ve gotten in the habit of applying penetrating fluid to other nuts and rusted connection points that are accessible while I’m in an area of the truck. I’ve been grateful on future repairs many times. Btw I’ve found a great penetrating fluid to be equal parts transmission fluid and acetone (use a metal container-acetone dissolves plastic).

On an older car, an electric impact wrench has become a basic hand tool. It saves a lot of stripped bolt heads and busted knuckles. Clean the bolts off with a quick wire brushing before re-installing and use a little anti-seize. It does wonders if you have to disassemble anything again.

Thanks for the demonstration. Some things I learned from seasoned mechanics is: 1. Use Nickel Anti Seize on the cotter pins and medium strength threadlockers on cotter pin to prevent corrosion and rust, preventing rust welding or thread galling. ▪︎ The threadlockers are Loctite/Permatex 242 Blue(can be removed with hand tools), Loctite/Permatex 290 Green(wicking/penetrating put on after torque) And if you want you can use Permatex Orange 25210(high strength threadlocker that's 3x stronger than Blue but as easy to remove with breakerbars) Nickel Anti-Seize instead of Copper because according to Henkel-Adhesives(Loctite) Copper on stainless steel causes inter-crystalline corrosion with the threads. Nickel-Graf($18 8-oz)/Loctite Nickel Anti-Seize ($16 - 8oz) the Anti-Seize is coated on the threads if you have rust problems but you have to reduce torque values by 30% [recommended by Ajax the worlds leading bolt fastener manufacturers/ engineers] (multiply dry torque by 0.7 to get wet torque) ▪︎ for example 44ft-lbs * 0.7 = 30.8ft-lbs. 2. Put the Ball Joints in a deep freezer overnight so it shrinks the ball joint which makes it much easier to press in. You can also rent a ball joint press for $20 or free if you put up a deposit.

I have been trying to get my ball joint out of the socket for hours now. I have tried a long pry bar, a fork with an 8 foot pipe on it, and it has barely budged. Impact, heat, and penetrant hasn't worked. I would kill to live where you live with no rust. My car is in good shape for where we live. Going to try an air hammer on it now, I truly have no ideas left

Lighting WAS GREAT, like you said though use penetrating spray. If I know I'm going to be changing some part out & it doesn't require an immediate fix ? I'll spray everything down I have to take off about a week before I have to do the job. Also I would have cleaned the ball joint hole out maybe with sandpaper to get the rust out of there then used anti seize before pressing joint back in. Try to find parts that are greasable if possible, they have a grease zerk. You did a GREAT JOB especially since you don't have all the fancy tools like most of us & doing it on the ground. Hey what kind of gloves were they ?

I was replacing a lower ball joint yesterday on a 1997 ford escort and it took me about a hour to get it out. I used a pickle fork and a air hammer and 4 lb sledge it was 22 years old and being in ny with all the rust and salt did not help me . I sprayed all the hardware and the ball joint and let it sit for a little while first.

Just did two lower ball joints on a 2005 jeep liberty. No way this trick would have worked, these ball joints required alot of pressure to take out and put in, couldnt just knock it in, though I imagine on alot of small cars it might work. Used a ball joint press kit from advanced auto (they loan them out).
