I'm an old dude who grew up with motown and then classic rock. After that, it all seemed to go downhill. I had pretty much given up on popular music and started focusing on classical music. Did that for many years. Then I saw Bandmaid, and thought, "Wow! This is fresh and new and brilliant." That led me to discover Lovebites and the genius of Miyako. I have both of their live concert DVDs. If I need a smile, I put one of the DVDs in, and smile like a damn fool the whole time I'm watching it. They make me happy, and isn't that what music is supposed to do? In all of my years of of watching music (over 60 years), I've never seen someone like Miyako. The last person I can think of who was that amazing on 2 instruments was Rachmaninoff, who played both violin and piano at concert level. I hope everyone understands that a musician like Miyako comes along only once in a lifetime!

Hey, here's an old wolf in Japan started with Gene Vincent and Little Richard. I feel the same. BTW, Rachmaninoff is the musician that has given the greatest influence to Miyako. She said she composed Above the Black Sea and Under the Red Sky as love letters to Rachmaninoff. She adores him.

Guitarists Miyako and Midori are both from the city of Osaka, both took piano lessons for years (Midori also learned organ), and both took up the guitar relatively late. Midori went to music school - Musicians Institute Osaka branch, where one of her instructors was the late Mikio Fujioka, lead guitarist of Babymetal's Kami Band - and Miyako is basically self-taught. Miyako made use of a well-known instructional book series, whose title literally translated into English is "Mechanical Training Phrases from Hell", working her way through the entire guitar series. There are versions of these instructional books for bass and drums too, and there's hardly a Japanese musician on those instruments who hasn't studied them.

Miyako (the brilliant composer of this piece and world-class guitarist AND pianist) is so humble and soft-spoken if you find the other videos of her online. She even mentions once that she feels fortunate to make a living as a musician! Also a bit of a nerd, she modified her passive Dean into an active one with batteries and capacitors to give it a unique tonal quality. Such an amazing human. Indeed we are so lucky to witness this genius.

Like, most bands would kill to have 1 guitarist even half as good as one of these ladies...and Lovebites has both of em. And then you get into Miho on bass and Haruna on drums...yeah, it's just not fair. Then last, but not least of course, Asami as your vocalist. Insane... I know I said this in other comment on another one of your videos, but I can't wait for you to react to their song Break The Wall. Miyako's part in it...well, you'll see. Miyako as you guessed is the main composer for the band but they all write their own songs and yes this includes the drummer Haruna who wrote a fan favorite, song is "Bravehearted". The fact they are also versatile is such an awesome point, hard rock, heavy metal, power metal, trash metal, symphonic, progressive, ballads. Great reaction. Love you pause warning. Pausing video is a part of the reactions. I agree that Miyako is an extraordinary talent. She composes the music to about half of the bands songs. Miho, the bassist and founder, writes about the other half usually partnered with Mao, the former keyboardist for Light Bringer. He seems to be manager as well.Asami writes most of the lyrics, although Miho writes lyrics, too. I would love to see a Haruna-cam of her drumming through the entire concert. What a beautiful beast behind her kit. Midori, the co-guitarist is also an extraordinary talent and she compliments Miyako. The part of the song with the full stop is impressive. They must be one of the most practiced bands to be this tight as a unit. On the album Electric Pentagram, Swan Song did not include Revolutionary Étude (Étude Op. 10, No. 12). It only included the end piano piece written by Miyako. There are a couple other songs they have played live where they added to the beginning of a song.

Excellent review as always, almost touching. Yes, Miyako is a professional pianist. As a matter of fact, piano is her primary instrument, guitar is her secondary instrument, a guitarist is a side business for her. She started piano at her 3, and she started teaching herself guitar with instruction books at her 18. BTW, Midori started guitar at her 20 at a music school and started piano at her 2. Miyako is a main composer of the band and have composed almost half of their songs. The arrangement is done by collaboration of all of the members. Don't hesitate pausing the clips. Good job finding the right two clips to combine. Miyako, who composes a lot of their music, is a professional concert-level classical pianist, and was originally on track to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and we now see the result. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude. All five members of the band are Jedi-level musicians, but I think Miyako is a once-in-a generation talent, a true savant.

Or how about Hammer's lead-off synth solo on "Quadrant 4" from "Spectrum". Listen to "Quadrant 4" - I know Miyako has the chops to play something like that. Perfection. Agree totally...when I was a kid I was givena set of classical albums by my grandparents...I was fascinated by it... He (G-pa was semi-pro (?) coronet player in the big band era) used to quiz me how many insteruments were playing at any particular point in a song...I developed a good ear, but more surprising to him is I was already listening to and IDing the different instruments...shrug... To this day I still am an instrument oriented person, I don't really ever hear the words, the voice just being another instrument. Point is when I got in my early teens and first hear "metal" I recognized immediately that similarity between the two... It is the perfect marriage... Metalheads don't get enough credit simply because they occupy the other end of the pure/distorted scale of "noise"....or clean/dirty if you prefer....lol Being that way let me aprreciate on some level, everything in between as well... Probably wjhy i like your reactions....lol \m/

Princess Miyako is the next Michael Romeo. LOVEBITES is going to take over the world. All 5 of them are gifted musicians. And they are in the SAME BAND. It's a SUPERGROUP. No telling how far they will go. It's like they have already been around for 25 years. That is how solid they are right now.

When I first got into Lovebites....they blew me away! Still do! Japan is just Killin it with such great bands! I love songwriting and vocalists. Russell Allen is my fave. Go figure. You got great taste. Checkout Nemophila/ Dissension if you haven't. So much great metal out there! And I'm an older guy. Cheers! And then we also have Unleash the Archers! Fantastic stuff!

If I had to define the two lead guitarists of Lovebites I would say the following: one Midori plays a style that takes you to a paradise of madness that mentally chops your brain, then comes Miyako the second blade (like the razors) who plays a style that takes you to a paradise of beautiful and emotional sounds that finish crushing your brain. In my life I have never heard anything like this. Even the most recognized bands that make very good music in the metal sphere have never produced anything like this.

Miyako is playing a Dean USA Icon. The color is "faded denim." I doubt you'll ever see her playing a guitar that doesn't have prominent wood grain. Midori is playing her usual ESP E-II Horizon FR, only instead of the "reindeer blue" color, this one is obviously a solid black. The black color has been discontinued. She uses that guitar when she needs an alternate tuning, though I don't know what that tuning is (probably dropped D). Miho is playing an ESP Amaze, and I _think_ the color is "Lake Placid Blue."

Miyako played Chopin (learned piano since age 3 so she is a "PRO", BTW Midori also was a pianist but gave it up at age 20 when she dropped out of Pharmacy school to learn guitar) Miyako then incorporated classical arrangements in this song that she wrote and composed. BTW she learned to play guitar at 18 by picking up a Dean and teaching herself how to play while still keeping up with the piano. All these women are multiple instrumentalist even Haruna played piano before switching to the drums (probably couldn't afford to keep breaking all those keys if she played piano the way she plays drums (LOL)). Empty Daydream is another great transition song as is Edge of the World. (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lIGhzaatpNG4Z84.html) if you want Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways done by his clone, Miyako, it is stunning!!! Here is another guitar Goddess, Hal-Ca of Asterism at 16 playing with Miyu at 17 on the 7 string bass doing Metal/Rock/Jazz fusion like you won't believe; Dawn LIVE (small club due to their ages and lack of exposure) (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKmFstiCfq3JcZM.html), you want to see a guitar master at work sit back and enjoy!!!!!!

Lovebites just released today a video previewing their new concert DVD that's being released in Sept. It's for a concert that they did this year (in March, I believe) in Tokyo. It has 5 or 6 tracks that they've never done live before, like Glory to the World, and is over 2 hours long. At least for one song, Miyako is playing a Keytar (Roland, I think), and is also shows her playing a grand acoustic piano instead of the white Roland digital piano you've seen her play. For Holy War, Asami holds the last note for at least 15-20 seconds. Seriously impressive! I think they sound better than they ever have before. The DVD and CD is called "Heavy Metal Never Dies," and I will definitely be buying it when it comes out.

And I suspect was one of the reasons, aside from her shredding talent, for her to be asked to be a part of the band. I am a huge fan of this band. Miyako is a pianist who also plays the guitar rather a guitarist who plays some piano. Miyako has played the guitar for around twelve years and the piano for twenty-eight. How good will she be on the guitar when she has played it as long as the piano ? In an interview Miyako said that the piano has made her what she is today, You should check out X-Japan, their drummer Yoshiki often switched from playing drums to playing a classical piece on a grand piano in the middle of concerts.

  • @garykeeling2275

In terms of just the guitar, I place Miyako and Midori almost equal to each other, with each one being superior in the particular style they play. Midori is the more technically-skilled player, she's faster, tighter and more precise, and her training as a classical guitarist really shines through when she has the spotlight (this song spotlights Miyako more, but Midori has her songs, too). Miyako, on the other hand, despite being a classically-trained pianist, is a blues-trained guitarist, so what she lacks in Midori's precision and technical prowess, she more than makes up for in ingenuity, soulfulness, and creativity, and her technical skills aren't really very far behind Midori's. As an all-around musician, I would have to give the edge to Miyako, though, due to her world-class level on piano, as well as her respectable ability with bass, drums, and voice. But on the guitar alone, I would give the edge to Midori, if only by a hair. And Miyako is still getting better on the guitar! Something I would like to see is Asami on the piano more often (she tickles the ivories a little in "We the United")! She's not in Miyako's league, but she's still pretty good, and it would be fun to see just what she can do!

Great reaction videos, particularly for Lovebites. I've watched quite a few of other people's reaction vids for them, but most are amateurish and I wouldn't subscribe or even bother to comment, but you seem to know your stuff & I particularly liked the 'Deep Dive' - sad they pulled the plug on you... I only discovered Lovebites this year, through another reaction channel (dare I mention her name, oh, I will, as she's a professional singer and seems to be a nice person; 'The Charismatic Voice'), but she's only reacted to Holy War. You've done loads, so hopefully that has helped to spread the message. Words alone can't do justice to these ladies incredible talents, it still makes my eyes tear-up when I watch some of their live performances. Apparently they are playing at a major heavy metal festival in the States in 2024, so some of you lucky people might get to see them! Hopefully they can pop across 'the pond' to the UK. Following on from Lovebites, I also discovered Rolling Quarts(lighter style of rock, but with some heavy metal interludes, but they are all so incredibly cute - did I actually write that?) and their latest single has just hit 2 million views. Time for another review of RQ?. PS. I live in the UK and grew up listening to Led Zep, Deep Purple, The Doors, Wishbone Ash, Heart, etc. but Lovebites' live performances gets to me every time. Thanks.

Let's be open and honest: Miyako's music skills are not just f~~~ing awesome, they are simply *outrageous* . I find her skills extremely unfair towards any other (Metal) band even _trying_ to "compete". 😂 They are "so fast"? Absolutely true. If I tried to play a double kick bass drums in Haruna's speed, my feet would just fall off after 5 seconds. 😂And Haruna commands her complete drumset for the duration of any song, pace and live show. Often I think, that she plays double kick generally, but that we just hardly ever realize it. 😂 Haruna, my personal heroine! 🤩 🐺

Some people can play piano and guitar but, to get up on stage, in a live metal concert environment, bust out some concert-level Chopin (of all things) on the piano, then, non-chalantly get up, grab a pick off the piano, grab a guitar and just go into multi-finger tapping in the space of a few seconds... that takes a Miyako.
