love languages | couple things with shawn & andrew

Ойын-сауық

Today in episode 11 of Couple Things with Shawn and Andrew, we sit down and talk with you guys about our love languages. We always ask our guests what their love languages are on our podcast, so we thought it was about time we walked you through ours. We are big fans of learning your partners love language, and we do our best to walk through why it's important to us. We even go so far as to talk through a few of the questions we found interesting on the quiz & how we answered them. Give the quiz a try, and let us know how you like it!

I have been married for 50 years, we were 19 and 21, had my first kid at 21 and the other at 23. Have gone through difficult situations. Economic, health problems, lost our daughter and other things. We were able to go through all of this by being there to each other. When you love someone, you are able to conquer everything. Once you respect, support and be kind to each other, you can keep a good relationship. Remember that we are different, not perfect, and have different opinions of things or situations. It is difficult to change someone, but with patience, communication and love, changes can happened. We say that we love each other everyday, go out on dates, hold hands and kiss, because we never know if today will be my last time we are going to do those things. Take a deep breath and focuse in the important things. Love❤️

You guys are CLEARLY *both* stubborn and passionate people so it’s easy to see why you might butt-heads sometimes but your adoration and love for one another shines! Keep communicating and don’t sweat the small stuff you two! 💓 At the end of the day it’s the love we share that truly only matters. Great episode.

Im in the same boat as Andrew, although I do some of these tests to understand myself more, I think we are way more complex than that. Love language test is great because I think communication is key in a relationship, no matter if it is a parent/child, best friend or SO. So having your basic needs identified is crucial in helping others understand you

Shawn, I totally feel you on the topic of giving and receiving gifts. I am an awful gift receiver because I don't know how to react and I don't ever think I am worthy of a gift for whatever reason. Now giving gifts, I love giving gifts; I get such a humbling feeling inside when I can give a gift that makes the receiver feel special. Love these podcasts guys!

Thank you guys for this episode. I love listening in on your real and raw conversations. This reading thing might be related to being a young mom. I loved reading all through my pregnancy and haven't finished a single book since having my kids! (They are one and a half years and four months now.) Concentrating on a book seems so hard when you haven't slept through a night for months. But I sure hope the love for books is coming back.

You two are adorable! I have heard you talk about how you argue a lot. I have been in situations with important people in my life where we had so much miscommunication. While praying about this, I felt the Lord showed me it is pride. Pride causes miscommunication. Scripture also talks about strife. Every couple has disagreements but we need to get rid of strife. God is faithful to show us if that is the problem.

I took a graduate class many many years ago where we were admonished to never ever say 'I'm sorry', as the further translation of that was 'I'm a sorry, sorry person'. It took a lot of time to learn to say 'I apologize' instead, but it makes it easier to continue that sentence. I'm now reminded of the snotty little kid that says I'm sorry in a sassy tone, clearly without meaning it. We are taking the test together tomorrow, and I like some PDA and am an introvert that needs lots of recharging time.

My husband is Intp and I am Isfp and it has helped me understand him much more since we are so different. We process things differently we think totally different and it helps us when have conflicts since we can see where the other is coming from better.

To address your initial point Andrew, I think humans are complex and each of these systems speaks to one specific piece of you and taken as a whole you can show up as a better version of yourself/explain yourself to others. I was also surprised when acts of service came out as my number 1, I always thought mine was quality time. When I thought about it I realized that I'm so so touched by acts of service, I feel that so deeply. I think you should check out Carol Tuttle's system called Energy Profiling.

Turned to Jesus for marriage problems...and listened to His commands. My gospel for love is the actual gospel. Don’t make love more complicated!! Andrew is always out here in videos sticking up against non-gendered assumptions ex."don't say girls are crazy". Round of applause for Andrew. Whether or not he knows he's doing it, he's using his words to be an ally to women and underrepresented genders. It's important that women aren't seen as universal so women can be better recognized as individuals with unique skillsets and challenges. Thanks, Andrew! And I love Shawn for being so open to feedback and being an amazing role model! I love the podcast. We need more voices like yours that seek to understand other opinions and outlooks.

Hey Shawn. You say that you’re a perfectionist. I have 2 self confessed perfectionists in my life, one in my family and one at work. In order for me to understand them and support them I have read quite a bit about perfectionism and there appears to be a correlation between perfectionism and OCPD. The WHO (World Health Organization) has an extensive explanation for OCPD on its Web site and it might be interesting for you to read and to see if you see yourself in the explanation. Some of it definitely fits myself but I am not a perfectionist. p.s. I love you two.

Hey y’all, love the podcast and you guys :) Not too comfortable with the “girls are crazy” generalisation here though. Anyone (regardless of gender) may react to things in a seemingly irrational manner sometimes due to personal triggers/past experiences etc. And even “irrational” can be subjective depending on the observer’s own perspective. Just a thought!

It's important to know that love languages can change over time!! So it may be one way at the beginning of your relationship and then change or evolve into another love language....that's normal but it's important to let your partner know! 😉

Love Languages made quite a difference in my marriage. So does knowing astrology. Just saying. It makes for a greater understanding and appreciation of your partner. It also helps with translation of actions. As for the Love Language issue, we took the test and I’m bi lingual and so is my husband. Mine is acts of service and quality time and his is acts of service and physical touch.

Couple Things with Shawn Johnson and Andrew East - there is SO much to astrology. My basic theory is that the Universe has an infinite playlist. What was playing when you were born will influence your basic rhythms. For example, if your Dad was born when the “1812 Overture” was playing, specifically when the canon goes off, and your brother was born when “Gangsta Paradise” was going on, and you were born when Mozart was playing, there might be some overlap, but definitely some clashes and discordant notes between everyone. To learn the basics, I read books and made notes and took classes. This was many many years ago. Then I let it be known I was studying and everyone wanted me to interpret their chart. That’s how I started. As with everything, the more you do, the better you get. Now, there’s KZread. Since you’re probably not going to really delve into it, search for “beginning astrology” and watch a few videos. Explore sun, moon, rising sign and shape of the chart to get a good ideas of the triggers and motivations of the other. Later look at the major aspects between the planets to see what the “go to” actions that are comfortable for them. You can study for decades and always learn something new.

Andrew you may be what a friend of mine calls me, an Enthusiast or an extroverted Introvert. We are introverts that need our alone time, but we love people and meeting new people but we don’t seek out having lots and lots of friends.

Shawn-- could the gifts thing be part of what "may be expected" as your "response"... Knowing the other is probably expecting X and you might show Y ?? Both about the same thing, but one is intended for the other, as opposed to your genuine response "as is"?

How do you handle a partner that doesn't listen to or receive feedback very well? My ex would always tell me that I'm trying to change him when I would point out that I see he has big goals and ask why doesn't he do things to achieve them?

There is a study guide called “the paths between us” by suzanne stabile that helps navigate relationships. I think very similar to what you experienced with this test, doing this one would do bothing more than better understand how you can best love and exhibit grace for one another! I think these two pair very nicely together and it would make a great part 2!

I'm kinda confused. Were you "mad" bc of the work you had to do today and how it went, or that he scheduled you work and didn't want to do it?! Sorry might not be my "Buisness ", but y'all kinda put it out there too. Lol. Anyway, LOVE YOU ALL 3/4 counting Nash and loving watching and listening to ya 💯💕😊

22:14 Saying "I love you" is the same as saying "I'm sorry," there's a HUGE difference between these two statements. It seems to me if Andrew is saying "I love you" as opposed to "I'm sorry" then he's using those words as a "filler" and also not taking responsibility for a wrongdoing. Perhaps there's a misunderstanding on my part and I will 100% own that. Though as I listen through my filter of understanding these are 2 very different statements. Also, when Shawn says, "Girls are crazy...etc." It's NOT a flaw, Shawn, it really isn't. What you say here about how you perceive Andrew's words makes complete sense. DO NOT DIMINISH YOURSELF! Having the need to hear one's partner say, "I'm sorry" doesn't sound crazy because it's NOT crazy, again you're diminishing yourself. Please don't do this.

Is it possible to have two love languages? I’m definitely “Acts of Service”, but I also like “Words of Affirmation” to know that my husband sees and appreciates me and all I do. He is “Physical Touch” and “Words of Affirmation”; he loves hugs and kisses and me telling him how much I appreciate him ☺️

Yes, if you take the love language test, then it essentially gives you a ranking and tells you how many 'points' you get in each of those love languages; it would definitely be possible for Acts of Service and Words of Affirmation to be closely 1-2 or tied.

Bobbi Taunton - yes. I actually read the book, and recommend it. Author is Gary Chapman. You can be more than one language, sometimes 3! The test gives you points on how you decided which language is most important. I got 8, 8, 7, 6 and 1. So the ones tied at 8 are slightly more meaningful than the physical touch at 7, although that is still WAY up there and I recognize it as valid.

Ok so saying I’m sorry is dumb. Instead say something like “I was wrong for......please forgive me. I will work hard not to do that again.” What does I’m sorry really mean? Wrong/forgive are the better words

One of my favorite things to say to new or young couples is that guys are dumb and girls are stupid: there are typical things that we may not hear or may not say and sometimes those are gender based, and sometimes they’re just human based. It’s not that we actually are but it’s the head games we play within our own mind that then can be projected onto the other person. And when those questions come up, instead of asking your partner specifically that, you’re asking your friend why your partner didn’t say or do this. Which boils down to a lack of honest and open communication. You don’t like something or you need something more or you just really don’t care at that moment are all things that need to be said to your partner. So girls may not be crazy, but sometimes we are stupid and sometimes guys are dumb.
