Les Paul was Steve Miller's godfather and a trusted mentor. Paul invented the solid-body electric guitar as well as multi-track recording, the eight-track tape and the concept of overdubbing, and was also revered by another guitar legend: Eddie Van Halen.

Steve Miller is more of Blues Rock than southern (with a tiny bit of psychedelic rock thrown in) -- you see that on his album cuts. His life story is pretty cool and a little hard to believe -- His godfather was Les Paul, and he learned his trade with classic blues guys in Chicago. The Marc Maron WTF podcast interview with him is really entertaining. I second all the other suggestions for him that you've been getting.

Steve Miller songs I think you both would like: "Wild Mountain Honey", a fast-paced song where Steve uses many vocal tricks aka melisma "Serenade", "Wide River", Steve's foray into 80's pop/rock "Abracadabra", "Threshold/Jet Airliner", "Space Intro/Fly Like an Eagle", "The Stake" with a great guitar riff reminiscent of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way".

Miller wrote this as a road trip song. When he was a kid, his parents took him on long road trips where they listened to radio stations the whole time and sung along to their favorite songs. In the '70s, FM radio allowed for stereo sound and provided a cleaner signal, so Miller made his road trip anthems bigger, with more layers to the sound. He made sure these songs were upbeat and fun, just like the ones that caught his ear as a kid. Please react to Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band 🙂

(It's two tracks, but really should be listened to as a single song.) . The drummer they got for this album and Book of Dreams (they were recorded to be a double album, then it was decided to release two separate discs) is fantastic. The Album this song is taken from, also called "Fly like an eagle" is a masterpiece and considered one of the best albums ever. The album's song list riffs flawlessly between different genres; Spacey opener in the aptly named "Space intro", classic rockers, Mushrooms smoke filled hypnotic psychedelics, straight-up blues, country, and even R&B tinge classic. It's easily Steve Miller's band's best album (albeit I have a personal soft spot to "Abracadabra" ), and it's a MUST listen from start-to-finish.

Just to clarify Amber, “Billy Joe shot a man while robbing his castle”, they broke into a rich man’s house not a bank, when they broke in he must have been home and they didn’t know it, when he confronted them Billy Joe shot him, Bobby Sue took whatever cash was there and booked. For the rest, you nailed it. Fly like an Eagle is recommended and has social commentary in the lyrics that is still pretty relevant today. Keep up the good work! 🤘✌️💕😎

@@frankbustamante6833 where in the lyrics does it say anything about a “bank” in El Paso? The lyrics say “they headed down to, ooh, old El Paso” the next bar is “that’s where they ran into a great big hassle” followed by “Billy Joe shot a man while robbing “his” (a singular possessive term) castle” . I’m assuming Steve or whoever came up with the verse used castle for house because it rhymes with hassle. But music is open to interpretation, so if you understand that it’s a bank they robbed, that’s cool, I’ll agree to disagree though.

Little Feats' "Waiting For Columbus" will give you an incredible sampling of some of the best southern rock and roll I've ever known. The double live album is widely regarded as one of the best live albums ever recorded. Guest starring the horn section from "Tower of Power". Amber is going to flip out when she hears it.

"Jet Airliner" is a great Steve Miller Band song, and there is also a great super-bluesy version by the song's original writer, Paul Pena, on KZread, definitely worth listening to by those who've never heard it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIRsz7ptqNjNntI.html

Steve Miller is one of the greatest guitar players of all time and his catalog of songs is very extensive. Saw him many years ago and he played for 1 hour and 45 minutes without repeating a song. On the other hand, from what I’ve seen (his hall of fame induction speech) and heard he’s a bit of an egotistical a$$hole. He has no problem saying just how great he is and that his godfather was Les Paul (arguably the best guitarist of all time) and how he learned guitar from him. And that he should have been inducted long before most of the people in the hall of fame.

Steven "Guitar" Miller has a ton of great songs you need to check out. The dude wrote so many hits. I wouldn't call him "Southern Rock" considering he was from one of the most northern states in the country (Wisconsin). He's just a "blues rock" kinda band with a heavy influence from the Chicago Blues style.

I first heard Steve Miller band when I worked at my first job in 1992 at Bell’s Amusement Park in Tulsa Oklahoma. There was a ride called the Himalaya and the owner Robbie Bell only allowed his music to be played so I got introduced to this amazing group. They’ve got a bunch of great hits. Try: Fly Like an Eagle, The Joker, Wild Mountain Honey, Abracadabra, Jungle Love, Dance Dance Dance, Jet Airliner, Rock n Me. Gives me major nostalgia.

This song is EPIC! My husband and I listened to this album regularly when we first got together. We keep replaying this song until we could get all the words right....it's harder than it seems with Billy Joe, Bobby Sue & Bobby Mac, but we eventually got it perfect. Every time I hear this song, I smile, even almost thirty years later. Sending you love & blessings!
