His label wouldn’t let him use his own name, that’s how “John Cougar” came to be. Then his career took off and he wanted to proudly use his own name so he added “Mellencamp” at the end, just to keep the familiarity because people already knew him as “John Cougar”. Then when people got use to that, he was finally at a place he could drop “Cougar” altogether. So he went through a few name reinventions, but he remained consistent throughout it all turning out one hit after another! ♥️

Just to add to that: They actually made him use the name "Johnny Cougar" at the beginning because they didn't think people would buy albums from a guy with a "weird German-sounding last name." He hated the name because he thought it sounded cheesy and because, as he said in an interview later, "No one's ever called me Johnny." They gave him the choice of either using the name or not getting signed so he accepted the name change in order to not lose the chance at the record deal.

There are hits by Mellenkamp that you would like, like "Small Town", "Pink Houses", "Jack and Diane". I would suggest "Ain't Even Done With the Night" and "Wild Night (is calling)". And yes, the rasp in his voice just makes the lyrics resonate even more.

When this song was released in 1982 he was known as John or Johnny Cougar. I believe that Cougar was a "stage" name that his record label came up with. He later dropped the Cougar as he never really liked it in the first place.

Have they ever done Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg? I think she'd really like it. At least I think they like story songs. That's a terrific one. Speaking of story songs, I'd also like to see what they think of "I've Never Been to Me" by Charlene.

My "Little Red Corvette" song was "Afternoon Delight". I called my Mom in my 30s asking her how she could allow us to listen or sing that song when we were kids. She had no idea what the song was about. Mellencamp's first several videos were low budget and shot around Southern Indiana. Hope to see you react to more of him.

John went through a number of name changes... When he first started in 1976 he was convinced he wasn't marketable with the name Mellencamp. They had him change his name to Cougar and for his first album he was Johnny Cougar. When he released his third album in 1979 he shortened it to John Cougar. He started making some hits and used his new fame to force the record company to let him change his name to John Cougar Mellencamp (that was in 1982). After getting a couple albums under his belt as Cougar-Mellencamp he finally dropped the Cougar completely in 1991 with his album "Whenever We Wanted".

His name is John Mellencamp. When he was young, the record company insisted he be marketed under the name John Cougar, which he didn't really like. After some success he was able to go by John Cougar Mellencamp for a while, keeping the Cougar name so people would know it was the same person. After more success, he was able to drop the Cougar completely. My understanding is that he wouldn't be happy if people still refer to him using the Cougar name.

When he first started getting big in his singing career, on the advice of his manager/record label, he went by John Cougar. Later, from what I heard, he decided to go with his real last name, which was Mellencamp, but wanted to transition his fame from “John Cougar”, so he added his last name to the end. Eventually, he pretty much completely dropped Cougar, and just used John Mellencamp.

He still has it. You live and die with it. He was lucky to be born with a mild form. Though yes when he was born there was far less known about it. It’s doubtful that he would’ve died. Thankfully. Only if there had been medical negligence at play.

Along with them singing the song Delia. If you're not familiar with the song Delia it's a beautiful traditional song off of Bob Dylan's album world gone wrong, if you want to catch that interview it should be on AXS TV or KZread
