This was my brother's favorite Mellencamp song. We lost him today to cancer so this must have been some kind of Providence that you reacted to this song today. It is one of John Mellencamp's best and I'm loving how much you love this song too. ✨❤️

"Paper In Fire" is another fiddle-driven hit off the "Lonesome Jubilee" album that gave you Check It Out and Cherry Bomb. Mellencamp tells wonderful stories, and while it's not a hit single, "Minutes To Memories" is probably one of his most amazing songs.
The Lonesome Jubilee is Mellencamp's best work, in my opinion. Love the accordion and fiddle-driven sound that runs throughout the album.

Scarecrow, lonesome jubilee, and my fave big daddy. The perfect trifecta
You will never get tired of John. He’s got an endless supply of songs like this. Still waiting for Crumbling Down, Rain on the Scarecrow, Authority Song and R.O.C.K in the USA. It’s so cool because I get nostalgic listening to his music because it just takes me back to the time these songs were constantly in the radio. You guys get nostalgic thinking about reminiscing in the future. That’s pretty heavy. It hasn’t even happened yet and you already feel it! Amber straight up had me tearing tonight. 😢❤

Rain on the Scarecrow is his most poignant, but I can't listen to it without sobbing. My late Dad was a farm supplier during the crisis and my family lost almost everything at that time. God Bless the farmers. Thank you, John.
John is a true American Treasure. Wish we could all just live in the picture he paints with his voice.
john did the music thing begrudgingly. He's an intensely private guy. He spends most of his time in his art studio and he is truly a very talented artist. He has one of my favorite quotes. He said "I have but only so many moons left, and I intend not to spend them getting old."
You can't have a real Midwest rock group without a fiddle and an accordion. John hits my 'feels' hard with his lyrics. Mellencamp is among the greatest...

He does offer a darker take on the plight of farmers with his great song, "Rain on the Scarecrow." There's also "Crumblin' Down" or a song that might be a Sunday pump-up song since it represents defiance--"The Authority Song." All three would be great reactions to watch.
He sounds great live in concert.
This one of my favorites. I also love “Authority Song” and “Ain’t even done with the night”.
One of John Mellencamp's songs you have to get to is 'Paper in Fire.' Check it out! 🙂

@@petercourtien4581 I have seen him 8 times, most of them in the old Market Square Arena. Being from a small town 20 minutes south of Indy his music really hit home!
To me he’s just an all American singer, songs of a simpler life , love of country, and where he comes from. Jmo
Someday this song will be remembered as classic. John Mellancamp was at the top of his game here: as a singer songwriter, and performer. This video does an incredible job of capturing his vibe and emotional pull of the lyrics.
The older I get, the more I love this song. I am 34 but have listened to him as long I can remember. Always loved his stuff but now that I really listen to the lyrics, it makes his songs even better.
Great Mellencamp song. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE play "Paper and Fire." As the name indicates, it is fire! Down home country jam.

@@mediaserver8265 Thanks for the correction, I haven't heard the song in awhile but remember loving it. 😁
Mellencamp is under-appreciated and is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. 'Minutes to Memories' 'Key West Intermezzo' 'Save Some Time to Dream' 'Rain on the Scarecrow' 'Between a Laugh and a Tear' 'Grandview' 'Authority Song' 'Full Catastrophe of Life' 'I'm Not Running Anymore' 'A Ride Back Home' Too many to list but that's a start.
I'm so very thrilled that you guys are digging John! He is SUCH an amazing and unique rabbit hole, and practically nobody does reactions to him! He BRINGS it!
I think you guys hit the nail on the head...life, is found within those "core memories". It's not about how big your house is, what kind of job you have, or the car you drive. None of those matter. Life is seeing your children grow, learn, laugh. Its from their first steps, to the steps they take, as you walk them down the aisle. Letting them go, knowing you did all you could, to give them the best life possible, and to carry on your teachings and wisdom. To continue the legacy of life. *Alan Jackson has a song that describes it perfectly. It's called "Remember When". If you react to this, trust me, you'll "both" need to keep the tissues nearby! 😊❤
Great choice by JCM. I would love you to do his tribute to 60s rock, "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A". Other bangers include "Paper in Fire", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Crumblin' Down", "Pop Singer", and "Jackie Brown". And yes, this is your seventh song of his. One "heartland rock" band you should check out is John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, who had big hits like "On the Dark Side", "Tough All Over", "Tender Years", "C-I-T-Y', and my personal fave, "Voice of America's Sons."

All of the above!!!!
Everything about John Mellencamp is amazing. Listen, I was born January 1970 so I was a pre-teen/teen in the 80s which by the way is the best time to be that! Anyway, John Mellencamp was big in my house because my mom was crazy about him so we listened to him a lot! The man is brilliant. By the way, I was 17 when they filmed this.
I love his music. I was lucky to see him on his first album tour in 1983.
My favorite John Mellencamp song. When the violin breaks in, in the middle does it for me. The whole song is memorable. Thank you John
He's just singing about small town life. We can all relate. Yes he uses the accordion in lots of songs and it works! Great live version.
This is my favorite Mellencamp song of all time, bar none. That long note on the fiddle that breaks the pause.... chills, every time.

Mine too!
That one line was actually.."You can't tell your best buddy that you love him". Tongue and cheek statement about foolish pride.. when it comes to expressing love.
That band was tight through the 80's and 90's, saw them in 87. Lisa Germano brought a great sound with the violin, she would later release numerous albums. John is an amazing painter as well, and still putting out the tunes.
I love the fact that John enjoys it so much, continuous smile, dancing, FUN He would be a blast to see. AND John can dance!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh FYI his original name is Mellencamp but at the start of this career he used Cougar, most likely to be kinda a stage name, then went back to his original name, which I love. His first known hit, "I need a lover", is amazing. All uphill since then.

I love the line “ seventeen has turned thirty five “. I’m such a fan seen him in concert twice in the early 80s. His lady back ground singers came from Bob Seaver. Great choice guys

That's those down-home values nurtured in the heartland we so love about John Mellencamp.
There are tons of great John Mellencamp songs. He's a great songwriter and performer. I'd like to suggest a song from his later years, "Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)". No one ever mentions it but it is one of my favorites (of many favorites of his!).
I first heard this song when I was in my mid thirties raising our two children. Now I’m 71 and a grandpa. It is still a poignant reminder of how quickly life goes by. We have those core family moments. On Father’s Day my son called me and told me how he followed my example in a moment with his daughter. Check it out!
You can't go wrong with him! Such a great artist with a lot of awesome songs to choose from!
This gives me SO MUCH nostalgia! I was born in the early 80s, in Indianapolis! Mellencamp is our hometown hero since he lives in Indiana. I grew up listening to his records and they have so much more meaning now as an adult and especially a parent.
Catastrophe of Life~~~ Love it. It came out about 5? yrs ago. He has so many!!!! Love his writing. He is always about life...
John's here in my state of Indiana. I've met him a few times. That accordian player was a good friend of mine named John Cassella. He died of a heart attack driving back from a boxing match. That saddened many of us. I knew his guitar player, Rick Bennick RIP. My band played for his bass player, Toby Meyers' wedding reception. Many musicians here in Indiana know each other. It's a tight community. Oh, and Lisa Germano of Fiddle.
He was my Moms favourite artist. I grew up listening to all his music. This is my favourite song. I’ve also seen him twice in concert, best concert I’ve ever been to. ❤
BTW, he dropped the name "Cougar" (long story as to why he used it and subsequently dropped it). 😊

One of my favorite songs ..especially from John Mellencamps Music Library's many tracks. Thank you so much.
John Mellencamp wrote the best blue collar music ever written. His music really was a voice for the working class.. a voice for real American's who love their home and family.
Two quotes of his I like to use are: "An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind" (Minutes to Memories) and "Without hope, without love you've got nothin but pain, just makes a man not give a damn" (Empty Hands). So many good songs. I was going to start listing them but I'll just say, pick one, you can't wrong.

So many good tunes! He does a great live performance, too. Saw him in Kansas City many years ago. They played through a thunderstorm in an outdoor venue to give the people what they wanted.
How could you NOT like JCM? He was one of my Idols back in the 90's and thought I went to heaven when I met him at a CD signing! Always LOVE his music and his Don't give a crap attitude, just being true to himself. Btw, do you know how much he supports the American farmers in this country? He has been a part of "Farm Aid" along with Willie Nelson, Neil Young and others for years! He was born in a small town, Seymour, Indiana, and still lives there........Never one for the Hollywood scene and is just a regular guy who supports the working class people....
Ok, we have to approve of this particular live version. Performed very well and close to the studio recording.

@@gregfagan199 I'm pretty sure it is not the studio version. I've have listened to that version many times. There are some very specific tonal differences, apparent within just the first thirty seconds or so.
His drummer, Kenny Aronoff, who he’s had in his band for decades, is also a studio musician for other artists. He is so underrated and has some of the greatest beats you’ve ever heard.
At one point in his career he went by John Cougar Mellencamp. He now a days shares his life with actress Meg Ryan. Check out Paper In Fire, Ain't Even Done With The Night and Wild Night that was also done by Van Morrison.
There's the old adage about how nobody on their deathbed ever says, "I should have spent more time at the office (or work in general)." Gotta take advantage of the time available with your kids now, since they grow up in a blink.
Got to see this tour live. No pyro, no flashing lights, no lasers. Just the man, his band, and their songs. I'll never forget it.
Grew up in Indiana. I was at this show. You never go wrong with John. He’s authentic. Just a small town guy who is a great artist. Any song, any time.

Amber, when you spoke “our core memories”, about the little, but vitally important, things in a person’s life, I was really touched.
There are so many more you haven’t done. Lonely Ol Night, I need a lover, Ain’t even done with the night, Rain on the Scarecrow, Crumbling Down, Paper in fire are all amazing songs.
Mellencamp is a great writer of songs about life and how we live it. You must give another great songwriter another listen, the late John Prine. ☮🖤🎶
Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s while "honing an almost startlingly plainspoken writing style" that, starting in 1982, yielded a string of Top 10 singles, including "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.", "Paper in Fire", and "Cherry Bomb". He has amassed 22 Top 40 hits in the United States. In addition, he holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit number one on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, with seven. Mellencamp has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one. His latest album of original songs, Strictly a One-Eyed Jack, was released on January 21, 2022. Mellencamp has sold over 30 million albums in the US and over 60 million worldwide. - wikipedia
Probably my favorite Mellencamp song- the lyrics are amazing and the music really hooks you. John Mellencamp seems like the guy you'd want as a next door neighbor.
There are so many beautiful, thought provoking, bring a tear to your eye, songs by John Mellencamp. Yet, he can still make you get up, dance and sing your heart out, no matter how lousy you sound!! 😂 I remember the first time I heard him on the radio - it started a love affair that never ended. Just a few of my favourites: Jackie Brown, Junior, Love and Happiness, When Jesus Left Birmingham, Key West Intermezzo, Dance Naked.... the list is as endless as the man's talent.
I think the best way to describe John Mellancamp is Heartland Rock. He's always been one of my favorites.

So you want more Mellencamp? How about a peppy pop/rock tune with a positive messages and it's a duet with India.Arie. A hidden gem in IMHO, something a little different than what you're used with the Coug'. The song is "Peaceful World", check it out! BTW, loving you guys, great job!
Love this song. Both John Mellenkamp and Bruce Springsteen have a knack for Americana
Another great hit from the album “Lonesome Jubilee” along with “Cherry Bomb” which you previously reviewed. More wonderful memories of 1987-88 😀 My favorite is “The Authority Song”- you will love it!
I can't LIKE this enough!!! Love this song! I recommended this a while back, so I'm thrilled you're getting around to it. ❤
Have always loved me some John Mellencamp from way back in the early 80's when I was a kid. Now that I'm older, I am able to really appreciate the lyrics of his songs. A lot of his stuff is really deep. I have always preferred Mellencamp's music over Bruce Springsteen's. I guess I'm weird.

I had dubbed this song to my Skydiving video, when playing back the video there was some accidental timing issues between the video and music. When he sang ,” I got to say hello to my neighbor “ a bird flew past me in the skydiving video, and yes I questioned my behavior when I jumped out of perfectly good aircraft. Every time I hear this song, I think of that video and my youth , when I thought I was immortal! Now a senior citizen,Where did the time go??
This song was the soundtrack to my last years of HS and meant a lot to me. Still does. Saw him live in ‘86 and ‘87 - among the best concerts I ever saw.

Because of John Mellencamp, you've heard the violinist. Her name is Lisa Germano and she put out her own album. Check it out! 😁
This song just gave me chills.
John Mellencamp was one of the few artists that provided music that I knew I would find at least one gem in the album that would touch me.
Totally my all time favorite tune by Mellencamp. Great arrangement by the band too!
John started his career as a greasy haired rebel and progressed his music to being about Americana. Heartland rock if you will. He co-founded Farm Aid in 1985 with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to help struggling farmers. All around talented musician and great guy.
"Tell ourselves we're still the young lions," one of my favorite lyrics ever.
He is one of my most favourite singer/songwriter/poet that God has given to all of us. Love this song. But I love so many of his little real life stories which flow through his songs!
Great choice, love Mellencamp. "Paper and Fire" and "Lonely Ol Night" are two more good ones you should "check out".
Every Time You Go Away - PAUL YOUNG 1983 one of the most famous 80s pop romance songs that the moment it starts your in for something special one of the 80s greatest voices highly recommend it

I reckon you two are amazing parents and your children are so fortunate to have you. Family is the foundation and backbone of society! Life is made up of a million little memories. Never forget to celebrate the little moments that go so fast, but create memories that last forever! To me, John Melloncamp just personifies America and freedom.

35 years later since this song was released on the "Lonesome Jubilee" album and we still don't have a better understanding. John Mellencamp is the best artist in my opinion at evoking emotion in an individual.
I heard someone say that a Violin sings and a Fiddle makes you dance.
