I'm 71 years old and was a teenager when this song came out. It struck me so hard that a song could be so beautiful. I went to sleep singing Nights in White Satin as my eyes gently closed and I went into dreamland. The addition of the orchestra to the marvelous voice of Justin Hayward made this song absolutely most memorable.

You should give the studio version, with the poem "Late Lament" appended to the end. Actually, the whole album "Days of Future Passed" is a must listen, as it's a concept album where all of the songs are meant to be heard in sequence. Often, in live performance, Drummer Graeme Edge would recite the poem either at the beginning or end of this song. There are also a ton of other great Moody Blues songs to hear, "Ride My See-Saw," "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," "Question," "The Voice," and, my personal favorite, "Legend of a Mind."

  • @MichaelCSmith-pi4no

This song was on an Album called “Days of Future Past” and on the album this song ends with a beautiful poem called “Late Lament” “Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room, Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another days useless energy is spent, Impassioned lovers, wrestle as one, A lonely man cry’s for love and has none, New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right, And which is an illusion.” And was preceded by another poem titled “Morning Glory” “Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right, And which is an illusion. Pinprick holes in a colorless sky, Let insipid figures of light pass by, The mighty light of ten thousand suns, Challenges infinity and is soon gone, Night time, to some a brief interlude, To others the fear of solitude, Brave Helios wake up your steed, Bring the warmth the countryside needs” Poems were written by the drummer Graem Edge.

I'd go as far as saying his voice is stronger live than in studio due to the emotion actually being more honest in his songs. I'd suggest you check out any performance of his solo-song "Forever Autumn" live in concert from recent years. If you liked "Nights" I have no doubt you'll definitely love "Forever Autumn".

I cry every time I hear this song. It's been 50 years and I still wonder where she is and how she is doing. Damn this song all to hell its sooo beautiful and totally gut wrenching. Let me help you understand the lyrics. "Nights in white satin Never reaching the end" is referring to the satin sheets that she gave him as a gift just before she dumped him. The sheets didn't reach the end of the bed hence the lyrics. "Letters I've written Never meaning to send" with 20 versions of his letter in the trash to try and win her back he never mails the letter why? "Beauty I'd always missed With these eyes before" he's telling you how beautiful she was. "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" this is why he never mails the letter, he just doesn't know if she ever loved him. 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you "Gazing at people Some hand in hand" seeing others in love just brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through They can't understand" unless you have had a broken heart you can't understand. "Some try to tell me Thoughts they cannot defend" you just can't mend a broken heart. "Just what you want to be You will be in the end" he wrote this for her. He is saying he is letting her go and above all he wants her to be happy. And I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written Never meaning to send Beauty I've always missed With these eyes before Just what the truth is I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you

EDIT: There is an original 1967 version of this, that's 9 minutes long. Strongly suggest you listen to that at some point. It has things in it that are not in this version. EDIT 2: Yes I'v been listening to this song since 1967. I'm old. Sorry. I realize young people don't like old folk being around. But I have enjoyed Ms. Senpai's reactions to music I have listened to for nearly 60 yrs in some cases.

In my "humble" opinion, this is the greatest love song ever. The rising and falling of so many different kinds of instruments, the lyrics, the vocals from beautiful harmony to voice cracking pain. In my experience, this ranks up there with Shakespeare's ability to describe love in poetry. All these decades later, I still get goosebumps.

This song is from the album, Days Of Future Passed, where the record company wanted to alternate The Moody's music with brief orchestrational interludes. Between 1967 and 1972, The Moody Blues recorded 7 albums which are the recordings that established the band as an innovative progressive rock band. The mellotron is used in these recordings and each album is unlike anything you've ever listened to. Of course after those albums there are so many others. Other great songs from The Moody Blues are, Tuesday Afternoon, Ride My See-Saw, You And Me, The Balance, The Word | OM, Peak Hour, Your Wildest Dreams, English Sunset and so many others.

Aileen, the Moody Blues are one of this 68 year-old's favorite bands of all time, and this is one rabbit hole worth falling deeply into. There are SO many awesome songs to listen to. My personal #1 go-to is "(The music to) the story in your eyes." For one of their more popular hard rockers, try "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band." I love watching you rediscover the cherished music of my youth!💖

O.K. beautiful you have selected one of their best, This was one of their biggest songs in the states. Justin, the man singing wrote this when he was 19.. Save a little because this song builds up near the end that is enough to make you cry!!!! I hope you like it! I got to see them in Raleigh, NC way back ib 1985. It was great! It was like listening to a recording. It sounded just like this. I do not recall if they did this classic. They are so darn good. I think ALL of their music is good!!!!! ALL OF IT.............. Bye for now.

He wrote this song when he was 19. I was 19 when they released it. They don't make music like this anymore. You need to listen to the version on their Days of Future Past album. There's an additional 8 minutes at the end that will blow your mind.

Oh yah this is one of the greatest mood pieces in rock'n'roll history. If you want to hear their more rockin' rockin' out, the next go-to song has to be "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock'n'Roll Band." It's an absolute freight train of steadily building sound and tempo, with a voice collectively shouting out for meaning/answers in an impartial universe.

Hey Aileen! One of my favorite songs of all time. I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I'm pretty sure they never actually play the ending of the song during a live version, which is sad and you should listen to the full version on your own time. Fun fact though, my sister followed them around for years on tour and the drummer proposed to her. She said no because she didn't think she could handle the lifestyle of either always being on the road or being left at home until the tour was over, plus relocating. Meh, to each their own. I think she missed out tbh.

The sheet music for the orchestral links are, I believe, lost and had to be essentially recreated. This is a good approximation and really conveys the sweeping (and often melancholic) sound that they were known for. Hayward would go on to have his biggest 'solo' hit with a song he didn't actually write, 'Forever Autumn', from Jeff Wayne's progtastic rock opera 'War of the Worlds'. Worth a listen in its own right.

The Moody's well is very deep. I was enthralled with them in the 70s, but it was The Story in Your Eyes that was first experience with them. It still remains a favorite. Juxtaposed with Nights in White Satin (still their biggest hit) will show you their versatility. The artistry remains when the tempo steps up.

The studio version is one of the great recordings of the 1960s (the backing harmonies are absolutely amazing on that release). Not to mention the fabulous poem "Late Lament" that closes the composition. Hell, you might want to play all of "Days of Future Past" because of how historically important the album was as the birth of prog in 1967. One song you might really enjoy is "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", which is commonly referred to as "Tuesday Afternoon".

Like other Prog Rock groups such as Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues started out as blues groups, although basically as blues cover groups. By 1967, the group was struggling to survive financially, leading the original guitarist and bassist to leave, to be replaced by Justin Hayward and bassist Graham Edge. This was the first song Hayward wrote for the group and the rest of the band largely did not like it in its original form. But Edge got together with Hayward and rearranged it into its final form. The song is about the white satin bedsheets his girlfriend gave him.

This is from their album, "Days Of Future Past" (a concept album). They recorded this with the London Symphony Orchestra. When this album came out, critics said it was 15 years ahead of its time. Over 50 years later and it's still ahead of its time. I have seen them live twice. First time at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was a magical evening. The second time was at the Greek Theater. Because they were without an orchestra, they rocked this song even harder. Check out, "The Question". ✌️❤️🌹
