This is my favorite song about a parent’s love for their child. Captures the next level love that one simply cannot know until having a child. There are so many more songs about romantic love than parental love but it shouldn’t be so. As much you love your spouse, siblings, your own parents, there simply is no comparison to your love for your children. Most powerful force on earth.

This was the 'theme song' at my high school prom (class of 1989). I thought it was corny at the time, but now I look back on it fondly and it means a lot to me. My favorite line is the 'do unto others as you'd have done to you' - not because of it directly, but because of what is around it. He's hoping the best for one he loves, and then mentions something that most people think of as a "rule". But by making it one of the good wishes for his child, it makes it clear that this isn't some top-down oppressive 'rule' but the hope that they'll live that wisdom because it is what makes for a happy peaceful life for the one who does so.

This is heavily inspired by the Bob Dylan version but I wouldn't say a cover either. He changed the instrumentation, changed a lot of the lyrics, and slicked up the production. But in generous fashion when he finished it he consulted Dylan about it and listed him as co-writer on the credits. You guys know I do love Rod Stewart all day everyday and I have always loved this one. I had to grow into the Bob Dylan version and there was a time I didn't like it...to be honest there was a time I just couldn't deal with Dylan's voice at all. But you can't argue his songwriting talent and I grew to understand that a person has the right to perform their own music and when they do it will be something inherently special. When I latched on to that mentality I learned to love Bob Dylan. Now I actually prefer his version of Forever Young to Rod's. He just pours it on out there, holds nothing back. It's s like a desperate prayer and your girl can relate to a desperate prayer. It's simple and humble and very raw and I think you will also love it.

Mary, like you I'm 71 and also believe we grew up at a great time. The music during our teen years was some of the best songs recorded. THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, THE ANIMALS, ROD STEWART, THE BEACH BOYS are only a few of the groups that made so many great songs. I love seeing young faces when they realize their Grandparents had better music than they do. Love songs that were romantic not vulgar. Today they get really descriptive saying it all. Not romantic at all. Well Mary, seeing young peoples faces when they hear some of the tunes that we still love, is very rewarding. Watching them get excited when hearing LYNARD SKINARD for the first time or LED ZEPPELIN playing Stairway to Heaven. Here's hoping they get inspired to create more music like ours.

This makes six Rod Stewart songs youv'e done, and it's chronologically the last of the bunch (1988). But there are a lot of songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s still to go. "Some Guys Have All the Luck", "Baby Jane", "Passion", "My Heart Can't Tell You No", and "The Motown Song" might be some good ones to choose for your next venture. I wondered for years if the little boy in this video was Rod's son or his nephew or something... turns out it's not. The boy's name is Alex Zuckerman. It's still a beautiful song. P.S. There is an 80s song called "Forever Young" by a German synth-pop band called Alphaville that I think you'd like. It was huge when it came out. Finally - that "awwww" face that Jay made at 2:30 is PRICELESS.

Definitely check out his version of "This Old Heart of Mine" he sings it with Ron Isley, it's extremely upbeat! Also, "My Heart Can't Tell You No" which is a criminally under-rated song of his. There's so many mare too..."The Motown Song" another upbeat song he sings with the Temptations; "I Don't Wanna Talk About It"; "Rhythm of My Heart"; "Some Guys Have All the luck"; "We're Having A Party"; "Ooh La La"; "Lost in You"; "Downtown Train"....any many more
