The one KEY element of the song that you guys may have missed is that Maggie was an OLDER woman. ("The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your AGE... but that don't worry me none, in my eyes you're everything." She is a cougar, who lures this young schoolboy (let's hope it's college, lol) away from home, his studies, etc. using her sensuality. She's probably having a midlife crisis and needs him to feel young again, and he's so in love (or lust) that he's "as blind as a fool can be" and is being toyed with for her amusement and to keep her company. The age gap is only alluded to the ONE time in the song, but it changes the whole dynamic.

Not only that, but at the end of the song he hasn't left her yet. "I'll get on back home...one of these days." I always liked that little bit of a dark ending, where he's sort of stuck in limbo.

The album this was on, Every Picture Tells A Story is one of the great albums from the era. Every song on it is great. Mandolin Wind, I’m Losing You, the title track, Reason To Believe, Tomorrow Is A Long Time. All are awesome. Pick one an give it a listen. You won’t be sorry

Yep, I am a huge Rod Stewart fan. I have seen multiiple interviews where he says the song is based on his first experience. It was with an older women at a music festival.

@@alexanderwalter4595 Rod's song is actually a different song entirely that he co-wrote about his children although it was lyrically very similar to the Dylan song with the exact same title. It was so similar that Rod sent the song to Dylan asking if he had any problem with him recording it. They agreed to share royalties from the song.

This was my husbands an my song since 1969 and my name is Maggie May. Still makes me feel I am at college. Love never grows old.

Rod Stewart is a British National Treasure, he's made so many great records an couple of my favourite 'The First Cut Is The Deepest' and 'You Wear It Well'.

Rod says he wrote this song after an ONS with an older woman --- FYI, he was not heartbroken. In an interview I watched once, when asked if "Maggie" was the only older woman he ever had a relationship with, Rod grinned sheepishly and said "definitely not" LOL. My name is Maggie, and I cannot tell you how often the opening verse of this song has been sung to me... however, I absolutely love RS and that mandolin solo is like heaven.

This was Rod Stewart’s first hit, and it was everywhere on the radio in 1971. No rock song that I’m aware of had ever featured the mandolin. A huge hit!

I watched an interview with Rod on a talk show and he sang this song. When he finished, one woman in the audience yelled out, "I lost my virginity to this song!" He just kind of stepped back and smiled. He said, "You did? Did anyone else lose their virginity to Maggie May?" and about 25 people raised their hands...both men and women. It was so funny. One of the best sing-along songs of all time. I'm sure the number of people screaming the lyrics while driving down the road is mind boggling. I don't think I have ever met anyone who didn't know this song and it's lyrics by heart. A true classic.

I heard an interview with Rod in the 90s and he was asked about playing the same sets night after night and he said (something like), "I think I've sung 'Maggie Mae" over 5,000 times." The interviewer asked "Do you get tired of it?" Rod said, "Never. I love that song!"

“Stay With Me” by Faces, with Rod as lead singer is pure energy from start to finish. Should be added to your list.

PP Arnold’s version of “First Cut is the Deepest” is the best IMO. And I say that as a huge Rod Stewart fan.

You really need to check out some Small Faces/Faces e.g. 'Itchycoo Park', 'Stay With Me', and 'Ooh La La' . The Small Faces became The Faces when Rod Stewart joined the band as lead singer.

My Mom was absolutely in love with Rod Stewart. This was the song that made her fall in love with him. She passed away in 2020. This song hits me in the feels. ❤

Their "Maybe I'm Amazed" beats the original, IMHO.

The instrument that comes in toward the end, playing the high, trilling notes, is a mandolin. They're commonly used in bluegrass music, but are pretty unusual in rock. Next Stops: "Forever Young" "Young Turks" "People Get Ready" (featuring Jeff Beck)

Rod's Maggie May never gets old. Never get tired of it. The Mandolin is always a delight.

Listen to “Stay With Me”. He has a lot of great songs but that is one of my favorites and I have to smile at his audacity every time I hear it.

Rod Stewart does a great cover of "I'm Losing You".

If you love Rod’s voice and harmony “All for love” with Sting and Bryan Adams is a must!! It’s beautiful how they blend

This is the song that put Rod on top.I had a .45 of this song and played it many times.Those were good times.

That sound you loved is a mandolin. This is a song about a kid being lured into a relationship with an older woman ( a cougar), then after he falls hard for her, she moves on the a new conquest and drops him. 'You Wear It Well', is a similar sounding song. 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy', is a disco song he did. 'Hot Legs' is another good one, but he's had numerous hits over the years. He was with The Jeff Beck Group and Small Faces, as well as having a successful solo career. My wife and l were dating, when this song was a mega hit in '71.

This song takes me back to 2001. From May-August it was the summer i ever had. I can't explain it but it gives me that overwhelming joy and can make me smile. And this song for some reason I was hearing all the time.

Heard an interview clip with him, where he said he was driving to London when he heard that this had hit Number 1 in UK. Said he turned the car around and drove home to hug mom and dad. I love that thought. BTW, I worked one of his shows a few years back. He's still got it, but I'll mention that at 5'10", I towered over him!

Maggie May is my favorite Rod Stewart song, I was teenager when I heard this song & bought the 45 then I bought albums folded by CD. Yes I'm in my 70's.

Grew up with this wonderful song. But don't sleep on "Mandolin Wind" or "You Wear it Well."

The album that this is taken from, "Every Picture Tells a Story" is one of those albums that is considered perfect. There is not one bad track on the entire record. If you want to hear the most amazing drum solo ever, check out Mickey wallers drumming on Rod's cover of the Motown classic, "I know I'm losing you". Rod has been recording for over 50 years. His catalog is immense.

Love Rod in general. So, so many great songs! For sure though, Young Turks takes me back to high school days too. They really can't go wrong down this road.

A classic older Rod Stewert song. The most missed but most important component is Ronnie Wood. While he is most famous for playing with the Stones, his contributions to Rod's music are unmatched.👍🏻✌🏼💯

This brings back memories. When I was in the Army, those of us who played would go to the base Rec Center to jam. I learned to play the intro and the mandolin break on my 12-string Alvarez guitar, and every time I showed up, people would want to do "Maggie May".

Rod in his wild days with the Faces was one of the best rock'n roll bands of the beginning 70s.

Rods still got it .Yes Maggie may was his first as a very young man and a much older woman apprantly. He has many.classics .Sailing is a beautiful one and my mum loved him so when she passed at 82 we had a old Classic that Rod covered called .You can't take that away from me .Highly appropriate.

Absolutely mate , Rod in the 70s for me I grew up listening to him mandolin wind , reason to believe, you wear it well my favourites ! also one that people tend to overlook is you got a nerve from foot loose and fancy free 👍

You wear it well, Mandolin Wind, and, probably one of his finest 'The Killing of Georgie, Parts 1 and 2'. Some rabbit hole you've fallen into guys! Love your reaction to such great songs. After I watched your reaction to Sam Cooke's 'Change is gonna come' I needed a hug from Amber. Great channel you two!

Quirky factoid - On "Tonight's the Night", there's a voice of a woman speaking french at the end of the recording. Its his then girlfriend/super model Britt Eckland. However, in subsequent releases of the song (after they broke up) they removed her voice background.

"Every Picture Tells a Story" is the title track; a must. Absolutely rocks.

My favorite Rod Stewart song is "Have I Told You Lately". It's so romantic.

Oh man, one of the great songs of the 70s, and definitely one of Rod's best. Fantastic storytelling here, you guys will love it! Maggie is an older woman who basically took Rod on (in the context of the song's story, no idea if this is autobiographical) as a young boy toy.

In a Jan. 2007 interview in Q magazine, Rod said it was inspired by his 1st sexual experience, with an “older woman” he met at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival (he was 16). He also said her name was not Maggie May. He got that name from “an old Liverpudlian song about a prostitute.”

Love Rod Stewart..his 1975 album Atlantic Crossing is one of my favourite albums...and is the very best of Rod in my humble little opinion

Another rabbit hole to head down!! Rod Stewart was considered very racy when I was in middle school, but I have grown to love him and his amazing music! Go there, you guys will love him!!!

Rod was a heart throb back in the day. "Passion" "Infatuation" "Do Ya Think" "Hot Legs" and "Some Guys Have All The Luck" are a few of his many hits.

Love Rod Stewart. Not the purest of singers but his voice is very distinctive! As soon as he opens his mouth you know its him.

Rod Stewart has had a long music career. He is a British Rock singer, that started out in the mid-1960s singing Blues songs. Stewart finally had some hit records here in the US in the 1970s and had some more hit songs and music videos in the 1980s. For a while, Rod Stewart recorded some Traditional Pop albums, and toured with a Big Band orchestra. Rod Stewart has a new album coming out soon, along with a world tour in 2022. Rod Stewart is 76 years old. He is an inductee in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame both as a solo artist, and with the Rock group, Faces/Small Faces.

This takes me back. My old school days listening to this with my then girlfriend....oh boy, what memories. Thanks for playing it.

I was fortunate to see him twice. Once of the best concerts ever. It was like listening to his records. My favorite song by him. Maggie May was early Rod Stewart.

Rod has lots of hits. Definitely a great artist to get in to.

One of my favorite songs ever, it's about a young lad and an older woman.

Rod Stewart sang rock music with “the faces” and when he moved onto his solo work he did rock, pop, disco a little bit of everything. He can sing anything and kill it.

He started with some very early pop/rock artists in the UK, first coming to fame with the Jeff Beck Group, then joining the remnants of the Small Faces to become The Faces, then having a very successful solo career - which is still continuing! A long and distinguished career for Sir Rod Stewart!

Rod did a whole album full of crooner songs called "the great american songbook" i think they're all just remakes of classics so its not his music but since you like the genre you may like it

Rod's low point in his career. I understand he was trying to pay homage to the standards, but those albums are sterile over produced garbage. Rod is a Rock singer and that series was in my opinion a money grab. Take the track list and listen to the authentic recordings from the 40s through 60s. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra etc.

Really brings back memories from my younger days. This song must be at least 50 yrs old.

Saw Rod in concert the beginning of October. He still sounds awesome!

Give a listen to "Forever Young" "Lost In You" "Young Turks" "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" "Infatuation" "The First Cut Is The Deepest" and so many more.

One that's worth a listen is by Faces, Stay With Me (live version). Rod gained his popularity in this group, then went solo later.

It's always good to hear the mandolins come in at the end of this song.

Best song of his....Every Picture tells a story.

One of a kind voice.. He's awesome.

OMG so emotional listening to Rod....Maggie May was one of my late dads favourite songs. When I was a kid it was playing all the time in our home.... it's a warm hug memory

I grew up with him and this song and so it’s incredible to see people hearing for the first time. Truly

Young Hearts Be Free Tonight is another awesome song by him, he has tons.
