He has always been a master in shifting negative focus on players by the press to focus on himself. That way, he protected specifically young players. With Ajax this was his approach in the very beginning of his career.

I really miss this guy. Incredible person and manager.

One thing I always loved about LVG. Was his stance on the scum that is the english press they only create negative headlines regardless of the situation.

Faizal Anwar it’s true Smalling did perform under him and man united made way more progress under him than mourinho. Martial and rashford are profits from his era. Even though we finished 2nd and won the Europa League with mourinho, this guy was a much better fit for man united

Oliver Read - we made much more progress under Jose.. second in the league, Europa league champions and Carabao cup winners? LVG might have won the FA Cup but he sold pretty much all of our squad which Jose had to try and rebuild

I do miss him, looking back 6 years

He was brilliant at dealing with the British media, some great clips

I think if we got him 10 yrs before we did he would of been a great manager for us I think we got him a bit late on in his career but still what a character miss him

Yes, you could see that he had a philosophy that would have been amazing to watch if only he had time to implement it. And he bought very quantity players too

Everyone here has such a short memory and nostalgia galore. I’ve only fallen asleep twice during a united game and both times were during LVG tenure. The football was dreadful. There we a point where we had 0-0 draws more than anyone in the league. Thanks for the FA cup but that’s all

Always felt the opposite. His first stint as Dutch manager was regarded as his biggest failure. But what he did at club level and with AZ Alkmaar was amazing!

Even when they are awful, they attract so much attention. Your team can not bring any attention even if you win a league title. Difference between a big club and a small club. The way Manchester United is going they will be turned into a Brighton or Leicester sooner rather than later though.

Sacking Van Gaal was a big mistake.

never liked him. he sold majority of CL PL winning players in a single transfer window to replace them with DiMaria Schneiderlin Falcao Depay Darmian and Rojo. He tried to make a grand rebuild. Did not work. Dont like his character. it was a big mistake. Herrera Fellaini Martial were never United type of players but they did ok considering everything involved. Blind was a hit. Everyone else was disaster. If not for Lingard Rashford and DDG Valencia Young Rooney Mata in those times, that team would be relegated. Missed out on Lewandowski Muller Hummels Ramos DeVrij Milner But that was all nothing in comparison how Jose failed with Pogba and Sanchez
