This is the sound of a man wrestling with his own grief. The fact that somebody who lived so nihilistically stopped and reconsidered things due to the deaths of two friend makes this song so hard hitting.

this song is getting even better with age.oh,and magic and loss is one of the best albums ever made.

Agreed it's #1 other albums that come close are Loaded, Terror Twilight, Trout Mask, Blonde on Blonde, Pink Moon and this Record Magic and Loss 😘 ⭐ ✨ 🌌

A few months after my mother died, I saw a review of this album, featuring the lyrics of this song. I bought it just for the promise of "weirdness." Instead I got so much healing. I tend to recommend this album for anyone in mourning.

Sara, we just buried a friend of mine yesterday who passed from cancer. I guess you know that this album (Magic & Loss) is about Lou losing his friend to cancer. All good songs, but I like "The Sword of Damecles" a lot. Watching his friend die, "This drawn out torture over which part of you lives is very hard to take...." Only Lou. May be the greatest storytelling artist that ever lived. I miss Lou and Bowie a lot. Followed them from their beginnings, just out- lived them.

These days I been pulled to listen to this album ... don’t know why , guess it’s the sad state of things we’ve now, plus so many people you hear dying from cancer , anyway happy birthday Lou and happy birthday me too ... both from March 2nd , you’re not gone , you’re present

The album Magic and Loss was written as a tribute to a friend of Reed's who had died of cancer. I listen to it when I lose someone important in my life. It helps.

Dad came to visit me in San Anselmo I don’t know if I was expecting him I think I was expecting him but he handed me a tape he made me a tape that’s what he used to do. My dad was a heavy influencer of music for me except when I forged my own way If it wasn’t for him play music so loud growing up and it was about music and beer and women and I don’t think I would be here right now. But he started out the tape with this song. I can’t remember any other song on that tape right now and I’m trying to whatever year this came out that’s when he dropped this on me so I would start naming off songs right now but nobody cares I know it started with this. Appreciate you Lou Reed Bacon without ice cream this was a weird song for me I appreciate the contribution but for me it wasn’t my style I never Embraced it and I never jammed it I’m trying to think of other lyrics it was just not my music. A computerized nose see? Weird but I believe that my father influenced me with music I’m trying to figure out my dad so hard. Thank you for posting this video. Magic And Loss is a bit like Berlin. The music is great (and the production here is truly superb) but you have to cope with the lyrics which define grief even too well

it's not missing. On the album it's preceded by a separate instrumental called Dorita which runs into it but is a separate track. This is the single version. It;s better though with the intro of Dorita which should never have been listed as a standalone track.

@ Wikipedia has wrongly credited Matt Mahurin as the director of this video. Wikipedia has credited Tarsem Singh as the director of this video as well. However the uncanny similarity of Tarsem's video of REM's Losing my Religion is more than enough to confirm that it's indeed Tarsem Singh who directed this video.
