I agree that it's hard trying to daily an Emira. The other day I went to the shop to buy a paper, the shop is 2 miles away. 40 minutes and 30 miles later I arrived, I'd gone the scenic route! It's a car you just want to drive.

Nice comparison! I bought an Emira after driving both the Cayman and the Lotus and, as other comments say, it was heart over head for me. The Porsche was superb but the Lotus just felt somehow more special. I've owned it 9 months now, done 6k miles from new (including a road trip around Ireland - where I did have enough space for bags in the end!) and it's been brilliant. A couple of niggles but nothing to worry about. Hard to resist driving it everywhere!

@@dwinterx I like the way the Tesla looks. The Lotus too. I don't dislike the Porche, but I'm not crazy about it. Also, I don't want to burn gas, and I drive a 2018 dual motor Model 3, and just love the way an EV powertrain works. Instant torque, one pedal driving, no noise, no stink, AWD grip off the line. I heard the new Model 3 performance has suspension and brake upgrades, and will torch this Porche and Lotus off the line with it's 2.9 sec 0-60 and 500hp. In traffic, it's a beast.

Many thanks for the comparison- after a DB9, which just didn’t get used, we opted for a 987 Boxster 3.4S. Very happy with it, and of course, 6 speed manual and flat 6, the two points you made against your Boxster. We were interested in your comparison, as a local had bought one, and those supercar looks and Lotus philosophy made us wonder about a change ( when the Lotus has aged a little!). Your comparison seems right on the money.

I've always had a soft spot for Lotus - I used to own a 1967 Elan + 2 back in the 90s. Sensational, bordering on scary, drive. The harder you push them around the tight bends. Then you have to ask yourself, "How much bottle have i got?" The only snag with all Lotus cars (apart from the Cortina, Sunbeam, or Carlton) is they're aren't family friendly. Driving wise, there's parallels with Alfas - it's a no holds barred experience. The sensible money would go to the Porsche, but for a pure adrenaline rush... the Lotus. That's just my point of view.

Great video, thanks Pete 👍🏻 you can daily an Emira, one of my mates uses his as a station car. When I have driven Emira back to back with my 718 spyder I find the Emira more exhilarating and a better drivers car. It really is brilliant. The spyder is more of a head than a heart car. I bought mine for touring, has great luggage space, although Emira has better ride by a long way. The Emira has a few issues though. 1) is that appalling square and fat steering wheel. 2) the brakes are over servoed 3) it has a degree of rev hang, although it's much better than my 430CUP was in that respect. LOTUS have said they won't do a convertible so all round the boxster wins as a proposition BUT the Emira is a better drivers car and more fun / exciting. Therefore you can make a case for both. And Emira's now a tad over £60k used with low miles! And thanks for the mention 😎👍🏻 14 x 675LT's, 1,000 miles each over 3 days, not a single issue

Perhaps one of the best explanations of differences between how cars drive that I’ve ever heard in a car review. When I test drove a ‘6’ Boxster it sounded glorious and was so so competent in its own ability, that i actually came away underwhelmed. You just explained really well what I like in a car. Something that needs you to think, and work at to drive well, and will test you. The Boxster is very rapid, but your just a passenger, a happy passenger but just a passenger Agree Lotus need to find a way to get it topless !

Good review, Harry speaks very highly of his Emira too, but probably a better comparison with the Boxster would be the 4 cylinder AMG powered automatic Emira, I noticed you said the gearbox isn’t good but a comparison would explain this. I’m sure the Boxster would win but I’m biased, however I’d like to see Lotus do well.👍

Great review. Sold my 911 for a Cayman. Drove a Elise and sold the Cayman, for me it’s the drive. Almost bought a Emira but I am a biker so my daily Elise is practical enough. When I am old (im only 50s) and have to give up,porkers or Emira, maybe. Great insight thanks. Why not have special everyday, whilst you can. We live once, they are built to drive… Still we are all different.

The two cars that I’d love to own above all others: McLaren F1 and Ferrari Dino. That may sound odd- they are very different things. However, they both have mid-mounted engines, double wishbone control arms, manual gearboxes, non-electric power steering, nicely damped ride with lean in the turns (not overly stiff), and gorgeous looks. For me, the only car on sale today that hits those boxes is the Lotus. Thats why I ordered one. In a day where ICE cars are being dulled with electronic aids, or replaced with EVs, it’s the one I want to keep.

Nice video. Would just flag that it is not too difficult to draw a proper price comparison between the Emira and the Boxter/Cayman GTS new, or used of similar age/mileage this is the most appropriate comparison to make and there isn't much of a difference. A GT4 is a different animal. I am a year and 6k miles into Emira ownership and thoroughly enjoying the ride. Biggest smiles per mile of all my sports/exotica over the years. Would also highlight that that space behind the rear seats is very useful in size, shape and practicality - we did the NC500 over a couple of weeks last May and fitted in all our gear and food and cameras/drones in with no difficulty (even taking some of the gear from our fellow travellers in their F-type)

Power of both cars are adequate, we really do not need more than 350/400 bhp on the public road. The Porsche credentials are legendary. I know the Lotus looks superior, however the Boxter/cayman wins every time. And I'd still say that if they were the same cost. At £90k, i agree, loads of cars out there. A used 992 would be on my shopping list.

Agree with all the points you made - Looks Emira (its a mini 488 - which you can get for 120K...), Storage (Boxster/Cayman) wins by a mile (I regularly do a weekly supermarket shop for 4 using the frunk), drive (hard one that - Emira edges it - shame you cant get manual in the 4 pot), I don't like the Supercharger sound its too much of a whine - and a 6-Pot Boxster (new GTS) - sound not noise; but its the price - for 90K go for a Cayman (or save yourself 20K and get one with a few miles on it. But then the Emira is beautiful

Never really warmed to the look of the Boxter/Cayman, although they look much better than previous versions. The Emira looks fantastic, but I’d worry about reliability, practicality and the fact that there are so many low mileage, one owner cars for sale at the moment. Speculators getting out or a sign of unresolved problems with the car?

Whilst I have owned two Lotus classics (Elite Super 95 & Bid Valve Twin Cam 7) and loved every minute on the road, I have to admit that given the choice today it would have to be Porsche, heart & head. Amusing aside to this Mrs P vowed for years that if I ever bought a Porsche she would divorce me.🤭 Not that I was looking for a divorce, but I bought a Porsche, divorce threat was withdrawn and I had to hide the keys.🤐

The Boxster GTS is a cracking car but the thing that swayed me to an Emira was that slightly more analogue/old school feel you get but with the added benefit of the creature comforts, I sold a Caterham 7 420r for the Emira. The hydraulic steering, manual gear box, great suspension, supercharged V6, rapped in a beautiful shell, were too much to miss and are all going to be a thing of the past, in the not to distant future. Great review though Peter.

Really enjoyed your review. Have driven ( not owned)an Elise and Esprit. Will always carry a torch for Colin Chapman's progeny. Porsches PDK is the gold srandard for non-manuals. But for me my dream car has to be a manual. And light. And reliable. And still functional. Nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder turbo- I like the one in my Type R- but it will never sound as good as either the Emira or any 6 cylinder Porsche. All cars are compromised. But not all cars are truly special. These two are. If this is the last non-hybrid, non-electric Lotus sports car, not a bad finale.
