I dont even remember the differences between the original and extended anymore in Fellowship of the Ring, cause I never bought the DVD of the original release, only saw it in theaters that one time....but ye I agree ;D As for the The Hobbit trilogy....well I think I can do well without extended editions...or ever even seeing Desolation of Smaug again.....such an utter, utter disappointment....I hope that Battle of Five armies can be atleast somewhat as good as Unexpected Journey was, but I'll go to see to see it assuming the worst...

ByronRaver Uh yeah... IN THE BOOK, where he had dignity. Unlike the film, because PJ clearly hated Darves.. they reminded him too much of himself. And The Hobbit films did little to change this, with the Dwarves barging into Bilbo's house uninvited, and using Elrond's fountain as a bidet.,,, whereas in the book they showed up at Bag End up by invitation, while Elves made fun of the Dwarves at Rivendell.

Ken Burns Technically the Dwarves were invited to Bag End since Gandalf marked the front door and told them that Bilbo had volunteered to be a part of their quest. And I do feel that the Dwarves in Jackson's Hobbit series have a lot more honor and dignity compared to Gimli, particularly Thorin and Balin.

He is like his distant ancestor before him. He was really friendly, religious (to the teachings of the old ways of the royal Dunedain & Numenoreans), and highly honorable. Even towards the Elves and the Valar. He is so far the only character I know in the waning days of the Third Age that knows and highly value the ways and reverence of the Elves. Just like how Amandil and Elendil value their friendship towards the Elves. You can see Aragorn's way of bowing and tipping lightly his forehead, to show his respect to the king and queen of Lothlorien

Boromir, in a few ways, was more of a Team Dad than Aragorn: teaching the Hobbits to fight, standing to protect them, carrying Merry and Pippin through snow, plus he caught a falling Frodo twice (1 with the tentacle monster + with the stairs falling apart in Moria), and held Frodo back from Gandalf. Boromir wore his heart on his sleeve, which was why he lost his mind so badly. Plus he'd lost good friends too and argued for Aragorn to let them mourn Gandalf after Moria.

Pippin is the son of the Thain of the Shire, essentially a ceremonial kingship created after the last King in the North died, making him the closest equivalent of royalty the Hobbits have. Merry is the son of the Master of Buckland, the leader in the Buckland, and although that's further away from being a royal equivalent than the Thain, it's still a high position with no one above them. Frodo doesn't have this sort of claim, but the Bagginses are effectively part of the Shire aristocracy. So really the only commoner in the Fellowship is Sam!

Yes, Haldir allows the Fellowship to enter Lothlorien but with Gimli blindfolded. Gimli protests and Aragorn commands everyone to wear blindfolds. Legolas has a snit as he is an Elf and kinsman there. Aragorn convinces him to do so anyway and thus they walk for a while, with Gimli assuring Haldir that he will account for every fall and stubbed toe. Haldir laughs and assures Gimli that the journey will be as smooth. This does not last very long as Elrond sent word to Galadriel (likely his sons) and the blindfolds are removed, just in time for Legolas to demonstrate how Elves can cross a single rope bridge by simply walking on it. Later Legolas takes Gimli on tours of Lothlorien, something surprising.

Frodo alone has ever been to Lothlorien, and in the books I don't recall it being specified that Frodo had learnt about Lorien beforehand. No Elves of Lorien were seen at the Council of Elrond either. It was Rivendell and Greenwood Elves (e.g. Legolas and his companions/body guard).

But indeed, not to Frodo. I don't think it was intentional. I'm sure he exhanged words with everyone in the Fellowship in the books. But it's nice to speculate if you just go by the movies. One could say he stayed clear of Frodo because of the ring As an elf he'd know that the pull of the ring would be too powerful for him to withstand, maybe? The first thing Haldir says to Frodo is:" you bring great evil here" in quite an accusatory tone. He showed no empathy like:" oh you poor fellow, to carry such a burden". He was more like:" aw hell no, you ain't walking in here with that thing". Galadriel was the only elf to really speak to Frodo and she almost took the ring when he offered it to her.

When Haldir says "We haven't had dealings with dwarves since the dark days", he's referring to the murder of the Sindar-elven king Thingol/Elwe in Doriath. This scene made me think that Haldir may actually be old enough to have known him in person, all the way back during the first age. That would explain his reaction towards Gimli very well. @@leros34 Haldir falls in the Battle of Helm's Deep (along with a host of elves) in The Two Towers, fighting alongside men. It was a hopeless situation for the warriors of Rohan (and Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf). Gandalf rode out to find the banished Eomer and the Riders of the Riddemark asking them to come defend Rohan. Elrond sent a large elven force, headed by Haldir (a Marchwarden of Lothlorian) to strengthen Helm's Deep. The orcs attacked in vast numbers, and the elves and men fought desperately. The orcs overrun the outer walls, and a retreat is called. During the retreat, Haldir stays as rear guard of the retreat to direct his elves and men to safety and is overtaken by the orcs. He dies from multiple sword/axe hits just as Aragorn rushes to his aid. Great cinematic moment, I remember being in shock seeing and hearing that great axe thunk/crush into Haldir's back... That Haldir - a great elf warrior - actually dies. It was a visceral, emotionally fraught moment. Still is whenever I see the scene. Eomer and Riders arrive at dawn the next morning with Gandalf, saving the day.... but they cannot save Haldir, the elves and the thousands who died in that battle. (Movie version of course, no elves at Helm's Deep in the book except Legolas I think).

(I know it's two years later, but I have to disagree:) As with several extended scenes, they are indeed great and show us more of the world, but they aren't as necessary as other ones and the films are already very long and intended for a mass audience. I'm happy they released extended cuts for us fans. I'm not satisfied with how the Saruman plot played out in the cinematic cut. If I remember correctly, it isn't resolved as in: The question "What happens to Saruman?" remains somewhat unanswered. And regarding the Hobbit trilogy, the funeral needed to be in there in my opinion. All this talk about the Arkenstone and then the plot loses interest in it completely in favor of an overlong battle. I love the hell out of the Mouth of Sauron (although Aragorn killing him is the single dumbest thing in all six Middle-earth movies), but I totally understand that he's not in the cinematic cut.

In case you're curious about what Gimli said to Haldir, he spoke in the Dwarvish language called Khuzdul in Tolkienverse. He said, *"Ishkhaqwi ai durugnul."* In laymen's term, it's the equivalent of saying "I spit on your grave." The actual translation according to the source material is "May my excrement be poured upon your naked-jawed." Which is basically saying "I sh!t in your face."

Of course, Gimli didn't like that idea, but he said he would comply if Legolas was also blindfolded, but Legolas didn't like that idea either, so Aragorn makes everyone get blindfolded until Lady Galadriel let's them take off their blindfolds, and Gimli was one of the first and only dwarves to ever gaze upon Lothlorian.

Words cannot explain how much I love the looks of Lothlórien. There's a couple of things the movies depicted perfectly or near to perfect: Moria, the Shire, Mordor, Isengard, or the vastness of the halls of Erebor. But there is one thing that's just so quintessential Middle-earth, that it has become my favorite part of the movie to watch. I am talking ofcourse, about the realm of the most powerful Elvish lady in Middle-earth. Lothlórien Going up the stairs beneath the golden Mallorn trees The movie's depiction of Lothlórien is nothing short of stunning, amazing and even true myth. At day, it's a beautiful golden forest. But at night, the gold becomes less dominant, and it turns to silver and dark green. This shift in colour palette is a subtle reference to the Two Trees Telperion and Laurelin (bet you overlooked that!), two ancient trees from before the First Age. One shone with silver light, while the other shone with golden. One waxed while the other waned, resulting in a beautiful mix once a day. The dark blue signifies the 'night' of Valinor - beautiful, yet dangerous. The music swells to wilder and louder heights as we approach the silver light of Telperion. The home of Galadriel and Celeborn: white and silver, the eldest of all realms, just as Telperion was the older of the Two Trees The design, the colour palette, the characters, the clothing of the Elves, just everything is so quintessential Middle-earth! And let's not forget the music! The book The Music of The Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams has a description that is spot on and enriches my love for it even more: In style, Lothlorien is the most Eastern and exotic of all the Elves’ music. This is Lothlorien as a land of mystery, scored with plaintive female chorus and a trickle of monochord, ney, and sarangi. The writing is emotionally unreadable - neither sad, happy, aggressive nor passive, but aloof… “Rivendell is more about learning and knowledge,” says Shore, “but this is different. This is a more mysterious world of Elves. They could be bad, they could be good - you’re not really sure… The voices carry it,” Shore comments. “This is Middle-earth of thousands of years ago. When I started doing research, I started thinking about Gregorian chants and so on.” The Sarangi, an Indian instrument that gives us the magic of Middle-earth. The book tells us that the style is based on that of a maqam hijaz, which is an Arabic style of music. I found a blogpost that talked a bit more on this: A maqām is an Arabic mode usually named after associated with a specific place. The “Hijāz” is Western Arabia, where Mecca and Medina are, hence, this post’s title. Each week, a different maqām is used by the cantors of Eastern Jewish communities during services on the Sabbath. Which one is selected depends mostly on the content of the weekly Tora portion… As it happens, hijāz - as you might guess if you’re familiar with the Lórien tune - is used during days of mourning (usually fast days) or when particularly sad events occur in the weekly portion. Source: LOTR, to the tune of Arabia The Lórien tune is the first theme we hear in the movie, during Galadriel's opening monologue: The world is changed (I amar prestar sen): I feel it in the water, (han mathon ne ne) I feel it in the earth, (han mathon ne nen) I smell it in the air...(han mathon ne chae) Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. (...a han noston ned wilith.") It's only fitting for us to hear it first, not only because it is closely related to Galadriel, but also because we are talking here about one of the oldest realms of Middle-earth (perhaps older than Moria). Lórien is the realm of Galadriel. Galadriel, here played by Cate Blanchett, is a beautiful Elvish lady which dominates the screen everytime we see her. She has seen the light of the Two Trees, she has seen the wickedness of Morgoth, studied under Melian the Maia and seen the forests of Doriath. Her uncle is none other than Fëanor, King of the Noldor and maker of the Silmarils. She is older than most things we see in Middle-earth. She was there before Gandalf came to Middle-earth. She was there before Rivendell was founded. She was there before Saruman came to Isengard, and even before Isengard was built. Galadriel outdates the fruits of Telperion and Laurelindon that became the Sun and the Moon. Did you get that? Galadriel is older than the Sun and the Moon. She outdates the way we even count our years. Now how do you depict that in a movie? That's the conundrum the production team faced, and they wanted to honor Galadriels incredible age. Their solution was simple and effective: during her close ups they had put up Christmas lights. That way, everytime we look her in the eyes we can see the reflection of the lights, resulting in beautiful sparkles and the glimmering of an ancient primal light. Lothlórien is where time has stopped passing. The decay of the world that normally comes was halted by the power of Nenya, the Sapphire Ring of Galadriel. It's a realm of Sindar Elves, ruled by Galadriel, a Noldorin lady from Valinor. It's by her power that the evil of Dol-Gûldur was kept at bay, and ever since the Enemy returned to that foul place it contested with that of the Lady of the Golden Wood. Feared by the Rohirrim, older than the oldest of the realms in Middle-earth, Lothlórien is one of the places where you can see magic. Not in the form of Power, or Domination, but in the form of Art, as Magic was meant to be. Lórien looks perfect.

  • @amare1cro

It is clear here how the engagement with pursuit force of Moria orcs is missing. They really seem to be in a hurry when entering Lorien. Then after Haldir shows himself, there is deleted footage where Legolas pulls up and launches an arrow through his companions, obviously into the goblins behind. Then there is more footage of Lorien elves checking the bodies of about 30-50 killed in a ditch. Obviously, the scene where there is night which follows, as Legolas says to Haldir - we are in your debt - is clearly him saying thanks for wiping out the raiding part which was on our backs! Although they took a pretty good care of those orcs back in Moria, now the space would be more wide and they could easily be outnumbered, surrounded by orcs, shot by arrows. And they were exhausted from the Moria battle and the Balrog pursuit which followed. Especially the little ones. Down Gandalf and with the hobbits having fought a great fight, but probably exhausted, the Fellowship was down to 4 fighting bodies. Also tired, and sad after losing Gandalf. So who knows how that would have went if Haldir didn't show up

The battle of Helm's Deep was disappointing in the book; it was like one chapter, and they defended it pretty easily. It wouldn't have made for a good movie. It made more sense to make the battle much bigger and leave Rohan feeling hopeless, which gives reason for the Elves to come to their aid.

I'm no Tolkien scholar, but I'm pretty sure that Legolas, son of Thranduil, comes from a different elven kingdom (land? nation?) than Lothlorien. He's not the Prince of the elves of Lothlorien, although naturally he is still given due respect once his identity becomes known. Likewise, Elrond, Lord of Rivendell, is also ruler of a different elven enclave to Lothlorien as well as Legolas's home.

That's a loaded few seconds, I swear to God.

He sees parts of this scene again in the mirror of Galadriel. I feel like it's a deliberately ambiguous scene. It feels like some of the fellowship are turning against him, just reading their stares - yet we know that's not the case. It's Boromir, the kindest of them in this scene, who ultimately gets corrupted. Perhaps it's Jackson's way of creating the beginnings of Frodo's eventual departure from the fellowship - based on a growing sense of worry that the ring will corrupt them all

1:12 Did anyone over the years catch that the arrowheads are actually shaped like The Sting? It makes so much sense, since Sting is technically a an elvish dagger, which is relatively small in human size (fit for a hobbit though) and for elves to have arrowheads shaped like daggers is a nice touch. Impeccable details! (Just wanted to know if I’m not the only one who noticed this, because in the comments under various YT videos with this clip, no one seemed to pick it up)
