This is true in life overall. People can have good intentions deep down but if you're not mindful of what you're doing and don't pay attention to the big picture, those intentions can become twisted and turn on themselves, causing more harm than good.

I mean, the fact that Boromir is even able to give the ring back to Frodo at all shows his inner strength. People like Isildur and Sméagol were ensnared immediately. I love that Boromir is mostly a strong, heroic and well-intentioned guy. It makes the Ring even more insidious. The Ring can turn any hero into villain.

The greater and mightier the individual, the more tempted they are. Nobody could resist the Ring if they were to hold it. Not Gandalf, not Galadriel, not Elrond, not Aragorn. Boromir could barely resist its power for a few moments. In the end, only the hobbits could contend with the Ring's power as they were neither great nor mighty.

In Isildur's defense, he didn't really understand that the Ring was a horcrux. He had just watched his father die, and wanted to keep it as a trophy of war. He was also in the place where the power of the Ring was at its strongest. Frodo went all the way there with the INTENTION of destroying it, but it was still too much for him. We really can't fault Isildur.

To be fair Isildur was on his way to rivendell to see elrond to ask how the fuck to get the ring away from him before he got ambushed by orcs. So I'd say all men have some type of inner strength. But good point!

+Adam Dean Shafi......so my theory has always been that the characters of boromir and faramir have a very interesting relation to Aragorn that often goes un-talked about. i think the 2 brothers are each supposed to represent 2 strong, but incomplete soldiers of Gondor. Boromir has exceptional fighting skills but lacks strong wisdom, thus more easily corrupted by the ring. Faramir is not the best fighter but he shows strong wisdom and inner-strength resisting the temptation of the ring. If you put together the best qualities of each brother (who alone are incomplete), you essentially end up with Aragorn, the perfect soldier/king of Gondor.

+Adam Dean Shafi One other thing they don't mention about Boromir is that he is under a lot of stress because his father, Denethor is starting to go crazy. We get a hint of that when he talks to Aragorn in Rivendell. He knows there's something wrong with his father and that the burden of defending Gondor will soon pass entirely to him. Another thing they didn't have time to explain is that Denethor has one of the palantirs and he has been using it to try to find out what Sauron is planning. They're not just Middle-Earth webcams, they also connect people mentally. Sauron isn't able to control Denethor directly, the way he did with Pippin, but he CAN use the palantir to show Denethor only what he wants him to see. All Denethor is allowed to see are the vast armies that Sauron has lined up against him and these sessions with the palantir eventually drive him to despair and madness.

1:55 directly taken from the book. Legolas is very light on his feet, and his simple shoes/sandals won't even sink in the sand underneath his gait. He would walk on top the heavy snow with ease. I remembered that part from the book, even though I read it many years ago. I love Elves' uncanniness and mystical nature. Really cool attention to detail from the director implementing in this scene. I love these tiny meaningful details in the films.

One of my favorite passages in the book: "Legolas watched them for a while with a smile upon his lips, and then he turned to the others. 'The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming and for running over grass and leaf, or over snow - an Elf.' With that he sprang forth nimbly, and then Frodo noticed as if for the first time, though he had long known it, that the Elf had no boots, but wore only light shoes, as he always did, and his feet made little imprints in the snow. 'Farewell! he said to Gandalf. 'I go to find the Sun!'" I just thought he sounded so cocky yet cute.

But Gandalf is unable to make the call that will doom everyone and probably himself if his fears become reality. But he doesn't speak a word about them (even though if he did Frodo would likely change his decision); he knows it's inevitable but still holds on to a false hope that it may not happen himself.

@@anthonymcrooster3703 I think that CGI can be as good as practical effects. But it takes less work and creativity than practical effects, so people would spend less effort making it look good. A lot of the time they probably focus on making it look all flashy and full of unnecessary tint/colour that they forget to make it look real. There are just so many different aspects that make real life real. The textures, lighting, colour. It's difficult to have all these in mind when doing CGI. And the issue of the uncanny valley plays a part.

Nah, it's just the screenwriters making him an exceptionally weak character, as usual. I like the movies on their own, but they've gotten Frodo so badly wrong that I wonder if Peter Jackson and co. even fully understood what Tolkien was going for. It's actually Gandalf who wanted to go through the mines (having himself traversed through while searching for Thrain's ring) and Aragorn who had doubts. Boromir straight up didn't want to go and wanted to get the party to take a different road by trying get Frodo's opinion, at which the latter said something to the effect of "I don't like the sounds of the mines, but I trust Gandalf's judgement".

Voices being the source of power in Middle Earth isn't unusual. The greatest of the Eldar, the Noldorin lords who fought in the first age, could work powerful magic with their voices in songs and chants. Sauron and Fingon fought each other in this way. Also, Gandalf used a Word of Power in the books to try and seal the Balrog in the burial chamber of Balin. Didn't work, but breaking it caved in that chamber forcing the Balrog to take the long way round. Shoot, the creation of Arda was originally founded in the Ainulindale: the Music of the Ainur, a song sung by the angelic Ainur before the creation of the world that told the story of what would become Ea, the universe Middle Earth takes place in. As for his envy, Gandalf was the "youngest" of the Istari and second greatest. However, he always received the greater respect from the Elves and was given Narya, one of the Three Rings, by Cirdan of the Grey Havens. This especially bothered Saruman who felt that as the chief Istari, he should have the greater power. It is implied he even looked into trying to fashion his own Ring of Power for some time before realizing the One could still be found. Basically, Saruman valued his place of prominence far too much and always feared he would lose it.

@@robo8155 It was mentioned that the weather wasn't natural, even though there is no Saruman perspective in fellowship. Forcing them to go through Moria gives Saruman time to send a task force, the very one that ambushes the fellowship when they're trying to chose which way to go at the end of the first book. Nobody had any idea that the Durins Bane was a Balrog, so the scene makes actually less sense becouse Saruman would never risk a Balrog getting the ring, and for some reason he knows its a Balrog in the movies.

That shot at 0:20. Amazing filmmaking. The perspective casts the ring as larger than everyone else in the shot, as if their efforts are futile in comparison to the will of the Ring (which contrasts beautifully with Boromir's upcoming line, "...over so small a thing."). This perspective also highlights the figurative "distance" between Boromir and Aragorn/Frodo in this moment of temptation. All of this is framed by the distant mountains. Say what you will about the Peter Jackson films, but this is stellar directing.

0:19 the focus on the ring allows one of Elijah's midget doubles to stand next to Aragorn out of focus. You can tell that isn't Elijah if you look at him but the masterful cinematography allows Jackson to use a double in plain view whilst being unidentified by the audience. Great use of the camera and perspective.

Also you could see that the double's hands were different to Frodo's hands. The double's left hand was on his chest, right hand lower. But when the cut back, Elijah's *right* hand was on his chest, his left hand lower.

Aragorn releasing his grip on his sword when Boromir hands over the ring is such a nice touch. It is a subtle yet powerful way to show the urgency of their quest, as well as showing the integrity of Aragorn's character. He is not quick to engage in violence but is not afraid to either.

Very subtle thing but I'm sure Christopher Lee had his line of "Where then will you go?" redubbed to sound more like an amused question instead of a condemnation. As if he's genuinely curious what his former friend will do. Nice touch.

Boromir was desperate to save his people and Middle-Earth, and grew up fighting orcs his whole life, it’s understandable (also being proud) that he was tempted by the ring, but he was a true BRO! Most human character and would have given his life for his comrades (which, btw, he did).
