It’s so unbelievable to me that Jackson was able to not only faithfully adapt perhaps the greatest, most daunting fantasy story every written, but improve upon parts of it with scenes like this. For those who haven’t read the books, Aragorn already has the reforged Narcil prior to meeting the Hobbits in Dale. This entire sequence was added from scratch, and yet it feels so integral and monumental.

Don't know, I like Aragorn's character in the books better exactly because of this difference. In the books he has accepted his fate as a future king by the time the journey starts - he leaves Imladris already with reforged Narsil. He knows it is his destiny and he is ready for it, even though it's not what he desires. In the movies for some reason it takes Arwen almost dead for him to accept his fate. Almost like he accepts it only because he wants so save her - which is romantic, but ruins the whole "Aragorn is the True King" plot. I like it better when Aragorn knows his fate and carries it with responsibility and wisdom, if not some pride, than when he takes it almost unwillingly and being forced. Maybe the movie version is more human, but the book version makes more sense in the legendarium. I've also heard that Faramir's character was changed in the movies sort of in a bad way (he falls under the temptation of the Ring, which never happened in the books, and he just doesn't treat Frodo and Sam really well) because of the fact that the writers thought people wouldn't accept Aragorn as the King if Faramir were too nice (because, you know, Aragorn as the King is kind of a rival to Faramir who is the Steward of Gondor). And you know - with Aragorn like he is in the movies, it makes sense! In the books you never doubt Aragorn is *the King*. In the movies... Well, I have already written about that. I don't say I don't like the movie version at all, it is interesting and adds some tension and is more cinematographic (duh), but the book version is just more logical in Tolkien's world (again, duh - Tolkien wrote it, so, obviously). The True King is not supposed to meet his destiny just because there was no other choice to save his love, he should meet it with pride.

About their last exchange in Quenya (High elven) : Aragorn was raised in Rivendell, as all Chieftains of the Dunedain, the line of the kings of Arthedain and the last descendants of Isildur, were, ever since the end of the North Kingdom of Arnor. His given name was Estel, which means "hope" in Quenya. It was said that his mother, Gilraen, knew some of his destiny, as she had the gift of foresight. When Elrond revealed his true name and lineage to him, Aragorn was to set out into the world to fight Sauron's evil for many decades. When he came to bid farewell to his mother, her last words to him were the same words they spoke now : Onen i-estel Edain. U-chebin estel anim. "I give hope (Estel, her son) to men. but that's what Aragorn says in the movies: "I do not want that power. I have never wanted it." Aragorn in the books knew since he became a man that he was the only one who could unite the kingdoms of Men against Mordor. It was a destiny he had been preparing a lifetime for, fighting the enemy in the service of Gondor and Rohan. Narsil was reforged and given to him when he left for the quest with the Fellowship, instead of Elrond randomly appearing and presenting it to him at the last moment.

caderly123 because Anduril (or Narsil, rather, which was reforged into Anduril) was an heirloom from the old kings of Gondor. Aragorn's doubt wasn't really a big thing in the first movie (or book); it's only as he approaches his rightful city that it starts surfacing. In the book Anduril is treated like just another random powerup for Aragorn "oh hey, check out this wicked awesome sword, go kill some orcs". We understand it's symbolic, the king going back to his kingdom should have the king's sword, but I feel it has more impact here in the third movie, at the peak of Aragorn's doubt.

You may be right about the sword, the king of Gondor theme obviously connects much more with the last movie. And it was always obvious that the sword is highly symbolic. In the first movie it is a symbol of the near-defeat of the high kings of men, "no more than a broken heirloom" - as the Anduril, it's a symbol of hope and a sign that the old prophecy (?) is now becoming true since the sword has been reforged. Also in this scene the father-in-law giving Aragorn the sword can be seen as a little kick in the ass, but also as a very groundbreaking moment for Aragorn as he is most probably thinking, "you actually did reforge the sword, and for ME?" - the movie Elrond seems like the foster father who never saw Aragorn live up to his expectations, and never gave him serious encouragament (also we find an analogue to the story of Beren - Luthien - Thingol, if you know that story). It is only through Arwen's insistence and out of desperation that Elrond finally does the move (of reforging) and recognizes that there is more to this ranger than what he usually gives credit for. Then again, at this point Aragorn has survived and led the party through Moria, and lead men to victory at Helm's Deep against overwhelming odds.

The best part of this scene is if you know that Elrond raised Aragorn, and that the name he gave him to hide his identity as a child was "Estel", which means hope. So when he says he gives hope to men there's the triple meaning of wishing luck to men in the war against Sauron, the fact that the sword will inspire hope, and he's essentially giving his youngest son over to humanity.

It’s important to remember that in the book Elendil and Gil Galad actually straight up defeated Sauron while he wore the ring. It literally says they wrestled and overthrew him but died in the process. Isildur cut the ring off an already defeated Sauron it wasn’t a last second throw of the dice like in the movie. So the sword of Elendil was legit a sword that beat a ring bearing Sauron at the height of his power. And Aragorn was said to be more like Elendil than any other descendent of Elendil. So Sauron def had reason to be scared.

@Jeremy Brookes actually Bilbo is the one who originally wrote it. In the "Council of Elrond" chapter, Bilbo gets a little miffed at people doubting Aragorn and recites it. He then sits down and asides to Frodo that he wrote that about the "Dunadan" as he knows him when Aragorn first told Bilbo about himself. Gandalf only included it in the letter so they would know he's really him.

I like that Elrond and Aragorn have had their doubts about the world of men. Elrond himself said, "Men are weak" right before remarking in Fellowship that Aragorn had long abandoned his path to ascending to the throne of Gondor. Yet, Aragorn sees the will of men in Boromir's courageous death and ultimately in the men of Rohan, but needed this final push, facilitated by Arwen, to motivate the two men she loves the most to believe in something greater. They both needed a little kick in the back side to push them that little further. Putting that sword in Aragorn's hand is the injecting of confidence and strength he needed to take his rightful place in the world.

Hard disagree. It was a terrible idea that robs Aragorn of his character growth. The entire point of re-forging Narsil, and Aragorn's acceptance of it after the Council of Elrond, is his acceptance of his destiny. But, he doesn't actually accept that destiny until after Gandalf falls in Moria and he must choose between continuing the journey to Mordor with Frodo or saving Pippin and Merry. It takes two books to see that growth in Aragorn but PJ and his fellow writers decided to tie this moment to Arwen's impending death in order to make her (not Aragorn) a more relevant character. When he chooses to walk the Paths of the Dead, it is a choice that Aragorn makes but others consider unwise. That, again, shows him coming into his own as the King of the West. Again, this scene undercuts that choice because Aragorn's decision to walk that path directly springs from Elrond's advice in this scene as opposed to Aragorn looking into the palantir. Little things like this really ruined ROTK for me as the movie departed more and more from the dominant themes of the books.

  • @walover165

@@TalisUmbras In fairness, in the books Galadriel first reminds Aragorn of the Paths of the Dead through Gandalf after his return ("but dark is the path appointed for thee/the dead watch the road that leads to the sea") and is then also counselled to take the path by Elladan and Elrohir, Elrond's sons. ('Elrohir said to him: "I bring word to you from my father: The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead."'') So it wasn't wholly Aragorn's idea; and the sons of Elrond also brought the standard that Arwen made for him. Given the sons of Elrond were erased from the movies, I suppose Elrond himself became their substitute, but I would have preferred that Elrond was bringing him the standard, rather than the sword.

I love the delivery of "Ónen i-estel edain, ú-chebin estel anim" by both Elrond and Aragorn. "Ónen i-estel edain" (I gave hope to mankind) is Elrond's way of saying he trusts Aragorn with the faith of the world "ú-chebin estel anim" (I keep none for myself) is Aragorn's way of expressing humility and doubt. Combined with the fact that these were Aragorn's mothers' last words gives this scene SO MUCH meaning and depth. Absolute perfection

I love this scene. Aragorn always gave hope to other people of Middle-earth, but in that way, he also seemed lost and just never could find the hope that he should have step up to claim his right as the future King of Gondor. Now this sword, Anduril the Flame of the West and the Fellowship itself becomes his hope to save the world and himself. I personally think that Aragorn is one of the best characters in the trilogy. And Viggo Mortensen played him to perfection. :)

I like him better in the books. In the books the sword was reforged in fellowship of the ring, and Aragorn only intended to follow the fellowship till they reached Gondor.

@@lolwut112 In the books, Aragorn is a one-dimensional Mary Sue. He is so rude and he flashes his sword to the Guards of Edoras and insults them for doing their jobs. And we're supposed to think that guy is so kingly. Tolkien wrote him as such.

"Put aside the ranger. Become who you were born to be." What makes this scene and quote even more awesome is the fact that Sauron later aknowledges that exactly that happened. As Gandalf said in the second movie: Sauron fears what Aragorn may become. And Elrond in this scene tells him to do the same, to put aside the ranger and become king. And when it finally happened, Sauron recognized it at the Black Gate, where he first adressed him as Agarorn, then reevaluated and adressed him as Elessar. Sauron realized that it was not merely Aragorn the Ranger anymore, but Elessar, the true King of Gondor. A worthy enemy and threat.

If I remember correctly, Theoden is so shaken when he leaves because Elrond tells him how he is going to die, but that he must go through with it because it will result in Rohan and Gondor uniting for generations. His death is what brings Eowyn and Faramir together in the book. Again, this is what I remember from reading it years ago.

Well, If i would have to bet all my money i would say Elrond and Theoden never met, in the books Elrond doesnt leave Rivendel, not even to deliver Anduril because Aragorn already carried it since the fellowship left Rivendel. Galadriel through Gandalf told Aragorn to take the path of the dead of Dunharrow and Elladan and Elrohir told Aragorn, in the name of Elrond, to remember Malbeth the seer prophecy. In the books Theoden has nothing to do with Eowyn and Faramir either, they just met in the house of healing right after Pelennor Battle, and thats it. So, friend, sorry, but your commentary is fake.

This scene always gets me, when Elrond shows the sword and reminds and Aragorn fully faces his responsabilities as a king, he understands that he has no choice but to fight, yet not alone, as he is being given back the heritage of his line, the might of his ancestors running through this sword, so moving.
