My landladies moved to a canyon home and hired someone to pump their septic. Nokne even knew where it was. I called a local plumber who had worked on most of the homes in the canyon for 30 years. Unfortunately at the time he was dying of cancer. I apologized for calling , but wondered if e could give us a general idea where it was. "Go to the stairs to the lawn. Continue six paces straight ahead and then four paces to the left " The guy with the pump put a rod in the ground there and it hit the lid. Dug six inches of soil and the septic lid was right there. I drove to the store and bought a six pack of beer and took it over to the plumber's house. He died a month later.

People enjoy watching those who are good at what they do. Its why men’s sports is more popular than women’s sports. Its why actors/actresses get big money if they are good, and the vast majority get nothing. JB is a good worker, he knows what he is doing, but more than that: he is a good boss. Which is what the channel is about imo. Running a business well and treating your employees well, with profit being an important but secondary necessity.

My great uncle "Boots" Albritton was an architect, general contractor, and in the last few years of his life a septic inspector. I worked on his crew for a while. We went to a client who was complaining about their septic backing up. They didn't know where their tank was. So we got shovels, went under the house and started excavating the outflow pipe. After 3 days of digging it was determined that the customer's septic was either under the road or they were connected to a sewer. Called county, county says the road is older than the house and that there isn't a sewer under the road, but there is a discharge tunnel for a nearby city's storm drains. So the county comes out, and starts excavating the roadway. Turns out that the builder just dug under the road, and broke a chunk out of that concrete storm water pipe and connected the house to it. For 60 years this 5 bedroom 2 bathroom house has been flushing it's toilets into the Kissimmee River. The reason the toilets were backing up? Well it only happened during a storm, and the discharge from their house was angled toward the city.

Back may years ago when I worked with a septic pumping company this kind of thing happened often. Little or no records. I have seen drive ways paved over the tank. Tool sheds and even additions to the house built over the tank. Had one man getting a new well drilled and drilled right into the tank. Wanted us to replace his tank but we only pumped them. Installing them was not our thing. The well company in the end did the right thing and took care of it. .
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would find septic tank cleaning so freakin’ interesting. You, how the business works… it is a REAL slice of life. Thanks.
I find that it's a shame that locate crews are mostly wrong from where you guys are at. I do locating and I take pride in it. I can locate where my camera is from 8 in to 20 ft deep. I'm usually bang on, right on the money. The company I work for does video pipe inspection. Been doing it for 12 years and I've been out of my 1 meter grace only 3 times. I start from a C/O ( if accessible) and go to a municipal main or a T in a tank. Locating sewers for the city sometimes can be daunting and hard to get a good signal if there's a lot of underground utilities. Enbridge uses 512 Hertz around here. I don't know if it's the same where you are. It is amazing how many people forget where their septic tanks are which tells me that they're not very big on maintenance. I stumbled upon your videos a while ago James and I really like them. I could relate to a lot of the jobs that you guys do. I remember your video about the condoms you guys found in a tank. We had a very similar situation involving a trucker who was never home. Never used one a day in his life. His wife thought she was disposing of the evidence flushing them down the toilet.

I live in Alaska. We are required to bury our tanks a minimum of 2 feet with 2 inches of foam, or 4 feet. Such a pain sometimes, wish I could keep them closer to the surface. We also don't use concrete tanks at all, only metal and plastic. Pumpers usually have to go through 4" risers to get into the compartments, one company reccomended to me manhole risers. I love not knowing what's in the ground. Watched a contractor pull up a leaching tank the other day, sitting directly in the groundwater. Well only 120 feet away, yuck. Good thing the pipe from the building to the tank sheared and it was just leaking all over the place....
@smcgilvary
2 жыл бұрын
I'm also in Alaska, the depth is to keep your tank from freezing. In the Interior, some places have high ground water, and the leach field is supposed to be 4 foot above high groundwater level, with 4 foot of dirt above that. This can cause the tank to be at or above normal ground level, and then it also has to be buried under 4 feet of dirt. 2 feet of dirt can usually be replaced by 2 inches of foam, but there are a lot of septic mounds in my neighborhood.
@Etudekilla
2 жыл бұрын
@@smcgilvary Yeah I design mounded systems in the interior. They are a pain in the ass but not many alternatives. Fun fact for Alaska, an 'engineered system' doesn't need to be 4 feet above the groundwater table, that is only requirement for conventional systems.

You didn't hire him because of it. I respect that! I used to climb radio and cellphone towers (2 different jobs, years apart) and in both cases, we often worked with other companies. Not only would we help with menial stuff (loading/fetching tools, etc), but we would share things too. Hot day, here's some water for you. Hungry? I brought an extra sandwich. That kind of stuff. Tip to avoid cave-ins: make the sides stagerred. Doesn't have to be big ones. Sides should look like stairs kind of. 7' deep, i would made 3 staggers. 3 steps if you want. Reduces the chance of cave-ins by a lot and in the event there's one, only the first step will cave-in first making it a small cave-in and not very dangerous. 4' staggers is what we do. So for a 7' hole there would've been 2. No chance to bury anyone with 4' of dirt. (Unless your lying down because you got green on your twist of the twisted and you have to stretch under 2 legs and an arm to get your hand on the green circle) In simple terms, make your hole and then on the top sides take another foot of dirt off all around.

James, have you ever tried using a dowser to locate a tank or well? It's a long-held tradition here in Vermont, and there are dowsers and dowsers' groups all over the country!
Datum. Beacon? That's awesome! I had no idea such a thing existed! That's... cool as hell.
Wow! when we bought our house our realtor gave us a drawing with our septic tank and everything. So thankful. I think our county has that information too.
At work we had one of the older RRs backing up mostly thanks to large Salt Cedar (Tamarisk) trees nearby. We knew the general direction it went but not the tank itself. Need hadn't arisen to expose the tank itself until now (at least a couple decades). Nothing would flush any longer (1st indicator) & all attempts @ snaking the pipe were brief band-aids @ best & would come back w/ roots. Started where the pipe was known to be (partly under a sidewalk) accessible & just started digging. As we were planning on having to replace the pipe anyway...it was just follow the pipe all the way to the tank. Whoever had buried the pipe did it in pea gravel (not a great idea) that was then covered over w/ dirt. Found the tank 60ft away after digging up every ft of the pipe on the way there. Sure enough...had about a ft+ of caking. Is a spot not in the way of much so now the tank end is marked with a pole.
My house is older and I didn’t know exactly where the septic tank was. Also, my yard is steeper than this one, and I live on a rock ridge in the Appalachians. Somehow my most excellent neighbor, who is a master plumber and electrician, found it in about twenty minutes and didn’t even get dirty. ❤
It takes 3 guys (and the dude filming) to stick the detector down a hole hahaha love it. I don't mind your videos mate.
Locating buried infrastructure of any type can often be a real pain. Sometimes would get a work order to find a water shut off curb box, at some little old ladies house who has lived there for 50 years and had never had her water shut off. Usually we could get a good locate for the water line(code at the time required copper line) but could still be an adventure on where in the line the shut off box actually was. Worse one I found was 7 ft down to the top of the box(so another 3 foot or so to the water line ) Even without actively filling in land etc, you would be shocked how much the terrain layout of a property can change over the decades.
Yall earned yall money today
I seriously thought I could smell the tank through my phone but it turned out that my daughter crapped her pants

Seems it wasn't cleaned out since it was put in so over 40 years. Yeesh! We use Angel Soft toilet paper and I add Rid X to the toilets every year or so. Haven't had a problem yet. Knock on wood.

In my County they mark the tank on your property map upon inspection. They started doing it in the 70's from what I was told. Before camera's we would have take an educated guess in many places to find the tank, sometimes customers were not very pleased with the "new" landscape.

I don't think 3,000 is a bad price for that.
Invest in a locater wand. If you know where the pipe comes out of the house you can usually follow it with that wand. We used all the best electronics in locating water lines and we ended up with a using a wand for 90 % of our locating. In my opinion it works off the magnetic pull of the earth. Since most of the backfilled ground is softer ( not as compacted as the original earth around the pipe / tank, it has a slightly stronger magnetic pull. 🤷♂️

We have a small barn attached to one end of the house….our septic tank is underneath the floor(!!!!) of the barn. It has good access for pumping, but I’m not looking forward to the day it needs to be replaced! What were the original owners thinking?!
I dug one out that was 14 feet deep under an embankment that had been added later to support a road.
I hope you video the install of the risers, I am interested in seeing that
I bet the client loved that bill
I know, I'll plant a tree to mark the location of my septic tank! That oughtta work
Here's an easy way to find the tank. Go to the cleanout or toilet/sink drain that is at ground level and along an outer wall and run a 1/4" rooter through it to at least 15'. Go outside and use a metal detector to sweep the area around the perimeter and follow the beep. Septic tanks aren't usually found too far away from the house's foundation as pipe is expensive. Leeching field with usually have green grass and thicker shrubs and even larger trees than everywhere else in the yard. Now IF the contractors put the septic tank in an area that adheres to building codes, it will be downhill and possibly on the opposite side of the house as the well and be at least 100' away from the well as the crow flies. Leeching field should not be found in the lowest elevation of the yard nor in a ditch or bog or ponding area. Truly there should be no overgrowth or trees but that's asking too much for a 50+ year old property and you'll probably find the biggest healthiest tree within the field or next to the septic tank.
That locater must be hell on the back. They make larger/longer ones that sound like a Donkey Kong video game and don't require you to bend so much
The one-time cost of installing risers will pay for itself with the savings from the elimination of future repetitive uncovering for inspection and pumping significantly reducing the cost of septic tank maintenance over time through the ease of access and time on the job saved.

A collaboration wouldn’t make a ton of sense but would be so sick lol. Not terribly far from each other either geographically.
It's fitting I see this on a Monday.
Up in Massachusetts I remember we had a dig safe contractor named “on-target” and after a while we used to call them off-target because needless to say at least 65% of the time they were… Wait for it YES OFF TARGET lol!! definitely made for a lot of work and some funny memories
It's like trying to dig for the holy grail lol
All locate crews are referred to as “off target”. Remember to always call dig safe-ish so when you blow some shit up there are more people for the injured to file a law suit against.
I think you need to do an episode with Mike Rowe dirty jobs lol you got this
Good job. Never believe the locator crew.
Looks like a costly search/mistake
O please show the job being finished. I really enjoy these
