Lost In Alaska: How I Survived After My Friend Disappeared With Our Boat | Fight To Survive | Retold
It's a life and death battle against the Alaskan wilderness. Surrounded by predators, facing an outdoorsman's worst-case scenario, stranded without shelter and with no way to reach help. The will to live and unwavering faith are his only survival weapons...
Fight to Survive tells the inspiring true stories of outdoorsmen who have faced down death in the wilderness and lived to tell their story. Adventurer, author and survivor Craig DeMartino kicks off the series with his own story.

First, I’m glad you fought your way back. Second, when ever I’m in the out back, I carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) on my person - repeat - on my person. The one that I carry is an ACR Res-Q-Link. There are others. It addresses the satellites worldwide. When activated, that’s the first thing it does. Then it sends out the grid coordinates of the Latitude and longitude. And a unique code identifying me uniquely. Now, NOAA knows that (1) I am in distress (imminent danger of loss of limb or life), and (2) exactly where I am. As rescuers are inbound to my location, my PLB is sending out a homing signal. I urge all outdoorsmen to carry a functioning PLB in a handy pocket or on a neck lanyard when on hikes, canoe trips, camping trips, etc etc. it’s only critical.

You can live a long time without food but only three days without water. Jehovah had his back all along. But God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But along with the temptation he will also make the way out so that you may be able to endure it. 'Jehovah' is the God that Jesus worshipped and prayed to. His father.

So a regular intake of calories can be the difference between life and death.

You notice the boat anchored and the kayak? Apparently not. They were there for day hunting, not camping. Their supplies would be in the boat, not dragged ashore to hunt in a area just several acres big. Also, the boat is anchored. Why? Because each boat has a berth depth. You can't just ride up on shore, hence the kayak. Drowning? People drown all the time. Experienced people. Water, ice cold, sends you into hypothermia shock within minutes, quicker if you're inadequately prepared for the submersion. You also have river currents.

And I can't help but wonder why wouldn't a person create something to make themselves more visible from the air? Like spelling SOS with tree limbs, or even a large X? LED flares are very lightweight and could be carried around as well. And was his gun loaded? Why didn't he shoot three times when the helicopter was around so they would hear it?

You dont go anywhere in Alaska without being prepared. Go to the woods and build a giant fire and shelter. If your worried about animals, climb a tree or find a cave, or something. You have a rifle, and nobody goes hunting there without large caliber, so get food with it. Salt water is usually plentiful with muscles, and other edibles along the shoreline. There are also edible plants and grass is one of them. You are just sitting around waiting on rescue anyway, so make use of you time and take care of priorities first. Shelter, fire, water and then food in that order. After that, concentrate on signaling for help with fire, written signs in the sand, etc. while keeping up on the other priorities as needed. Try not to sweat and keep exercise to a minimal if possible That way you can conserve calories if you are low on food, and keep from getting hypothermia from being wet from sweat.

By the way I am a Hunter, trapper, fisherman, rock climber, kayaker, general outdoorsman, Medic and SAR Specialist and survival expert and instructor. I have a true story about 30 years a bob smith went bear hunting on bear island or kodiak island , went with guides hunted for at least a week or more , Every day they flew food in. The tent was surrounded with lumber stacked all the way up to at least 8 feet so the bears don't knock down your tents and maybe kill you .the bears were just coming out of winter sleep both men got bears . There Is more to the story ,but what happened on the dock at the plane as they were getting ready to leave, they see a man yelling to them as he gets close he breaks down crying. He was left on the island by plane and was never picked up. He was on the island alone for at least a week. had to walk the coast or walk across It. Never did hear If the pilot died or whatever , maybe RETOLD can look into It , I think It would be a great story. If you want I can give you more info from his son i know where they live.

@@soundsofnature7015Hi. Firstly I'm not an 'armchair quarterback'. I've done loads of mountaineering in the French Alps, Norway and the Scottish Highlands. Summer and winter. I've spent several weeks in the Brazil rainforest doing ecology research. I've been in several potentially fatal survival situations e.g. being avalanched climbing in the French Alps. Secondly, if you look for the 'Chickamin River' on Google Maps and follow it down to it's mouth you can see the sandbar where Adrian was stuck. And you can also see that it's a sheltered river estuary, not some tide race. Cheers.

@@DrewWithington Everyone wants to see you build a raft with a knife and pine sticks and use it to get to your boat anchored a half mile out on a river. So you think a river doesnt have current ? You think that current combined with the tide would be navigable by a hastily handmade stick raft ? His friend couldnt get to the boat in an actual boat with a motor dude. You cant win this debate. Your idea almost certainly would have gotten him killed or swept out in the ocean where he would have died for sure. Staying put near the anchored boat was the smartest thing he could have done. Could he have done more while waiting for help to better his situation ? I believe he could have done more to live more comfortably while waiting but building a raft with a knife and trying to get out to the boat would literally have been the dumbest thing he could have possibly done period. He would have had a better chance bare knuckle fighting a Grizzly bear then trying to get out to that boat on a raft.

First, you have to have enough wood to displace your body weight in order for the raft to float, second, you need to have some sort of material to tie the seperate pieces together. Third, you need to keep your body above the waterline when the water is just above freezing. Four, you need to have to have some way of steering the "raft" which is not aerodynamic like a normal boat. Five? Sailing is not a option. You need winds that blow into the direction you're headed. Six, the river has currents. One miss of the boat and you're washed out to sea, where the boat was seen after it broke loose. Seven, in Alaska, you're most likely to find wood, even windfall, damp and heavy. Eight, he had basically a pocket knife. They're not designed to saw through wood. The amount of calories you wood burn just gathering the materials needed while gauging that against the weather, the tides, the predatory animals. Explain what joy you feel as you annihilate a beautiful sentient animal? Do you feel strong or brave or powerful? I would love to understand how mowing down a sentient being feels good to some humans. Don't bother explaining - I'll never understand.

This is a very strange story, so many questions. How did his friend who was wearing a life vest and the boat which had a kayak in tow all disappear within minutes? If they were out hunting for the day, why didn't he have a water bottle with him? And If he knew he would not be reported missing for at least a week, why did he not try get to the boat or at least build a shelter? Why did he not just hunt, he had two guns and a knife. I Haven't heard a survival story yet where the person rather starves to death than eat some raw meat. Even though he said at one point he made a fire, so why couldn't he make another? Some articles said Adrian was found in or near a cabin, are there cabins in the area? what exactly was the relationship between the 24 year old and 51 year old men, that they would want to be alone in the wild for a week? And weird that he says he wanted to survive to let people know his friend died. There could be reasons for all these questions but this doco doesn't answer any of them.

Thursday, a boater found Hagen's body in the canal near Fox Point, about 30 miles south of the river mouth. He was wearing a life vest, though it didn't look properly secured, troopers said. The Alaska State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy. Troopers say no foul play is suspected.
