Several years ago, I was in the process of adopting an older dog who had been hit by a car and lost one of her back legs. The dog was sweet but seemed sad. On the day I was to take her home, the shelter called and said they gave her to a family. At first, I was a bit mad but they said the dog reacted happily when seeing them come in, especially the kids, and that it was, actually, their dog. They were told by a neighbor she had died after being hit by the car so they were mourning her (she was healed when I tried to adopt her so there was time between when they were told she died and then coming to look for another dog). They just happened to go to the shelter the day I was to get her so it was still a happy day. I told them to keep the money as a donation and, about a month later, my sister said a friend of hers took in a stray but their dog did not like her so they wanted to rehome her. She was with me for 15 years. 😊

  • @celestiafanforever

I'm sorry but that neighbor lied to that family! Whoever they are they emotionally hurt a family! I'm not sure how young or old the kids are but to hear from a neighbor "Hey your dog got killed after being hit by a car" and to find your dog at a shelter missing a leg but alive and happy to see you again especially the kids after said neighbor basically lied to you and your family stating that your dog had died from being hit by a car. Either the dog ran off after being hit and someone else found her and took her to the shelter or the neighbor saw what happened, hated the dog, and took the dog to the shelter lying about her being a stray. That's pretty massed up. The only bright side is the dog's alive, a tri-pod ( a dog with three legs ) and back with her family.

100%. Ages ago when I was very young, my beloved dog Daisy was lost for two weeks. No internet back then! My parents did EVERYTHING possible to try to find her. My house was full of despair, just indescribable. Then, our local radio station, WKER, which would always broadcast lost and found pets, read out about a dog found a few towns over. My Pop Pop heard it and told us, and we went to the house, after having had our hearts broken over and over again with false alarms - and this time, it was her. Filthy and about 20 pounds lighter, she was so excited to see us, the poor baby vomited all over the carpet of the very nice family who had found her (my dad gave them some $$ in compensation, but they were so kind, they weren't upset at all). If it hadn't been for that family putting it out there that they'd found a dog, for the radio station announcing it, and for my Pop Pop hearing the announcement, we might not have found her. Good people, doing the right thing. Thank you, all good people out there. ❤

I work at a vet clinic and so many people decline chipping their pets even though it really doesn't cost that much. You never know if your pet will get lost. I'm very happy this family was reunited with their dog! Edit: Heres some info about microchips bc y'all are being really fucking annoying - It's not a GPS - You can choose what information you disclose to the microchip company - When a microchip scanner is used on your pet, the only thing that shows up is the registration number and the number of the microchip company - A random person is not able to get your personal info from your pet if they're microchipped - To obtain your contact info, the vet clinic will contact the microchip company and the company will contact you - Microchips only work if you register the microchip and keep the information updated if your phone number or address change - Microchips are tiny and fit inside a 15-gauge needle - Pets are usually sedated for microchip insertion since it's often done at the same time as a spay/neuter - Pets don't require sedation for a microchip so if you're not doing any surgeries for your pet but still want them chipped you can do this and it doesn't hurt too much - I put one in a big dog and he didn't even notice - Pets don't know they're microchipped and can't feel it because it's way too small - The average cost I could find in the US and Canada is $25-$75 and most places I've been to in Canada have been $50 (including really cheap and more expensive clinics) - Microchipping doesn't mean that you shouldn't put an identification tag and rabies tag on your dog - Microchipping and up-to-date rabies tags are the best way to prove legal ownership over your pet

Yeah it's horrible, they all get hope every single time that they've got a new home, and they're always left behind once the people leave with whichever dog they choose. The emotional pain they're enduring must be immense. I keep wanting to rescue a dog but I won't know how to leave with only one. I'd feel so guilty to not take all of them. Maybe I should start volunteering at a rescue shelter so I can at least try and make their lives more comfortable. I wish I was super rich and so owned a farm. Then I'd just keep a few hundred dogs to run around as much as they want every single day. They'd never have to worry for another moment in their lives ever again.

@@DanielRumbacher This is a Border Collie, and while they are very smart, they also have tons of energy... if a door is left open, they are gonna go run and burn energy. She could've just been preoccupied with new sights and sounds, instinctively trying to herd things, looking for her people, etc, and went too far and got disoriented, or she could be too young to know her way home, or someone could have picked her up and driven her to another unfamiliar location, or even straight to the shelter. Does this look like a dog who was trying to escape a bad home? Does this look like a dog who doesn't love her people? Sure, they should've been more responsible owners and had her microchipped and/or collared & tagged, but I can relate to procrastinating on things like that, thinking nothing like this will ever happen (and it probably wouldn't have in the owners' care... this was a petsitter who left a door open). So don't be so cynical, and don't assume every dog is like "Lassie Come Home".

Glad this has a happy ending. I've heard of many stories where the pet was mistakenly adopted because there was no collar or microchip - and the new owner(s) would not return the pet. I went a couple years without microchipping my first dog until I realized what risk I was putting her in. It only takes a few minutes and is very affordable!

This exact thing happened to me when Tofu was 4 months old. I was at work & had my parents watched them! My mom left patio door opened, Tofu came out to explore! He got abducted! I didn't have a chance to put a microchip in him. I posted flyers everywhere. I cried & was so worried! I have ZERO social media. All moms & grandma from my neighborhood posted Tofu's pic all over! His pic even got all the way to New York lol. Three days later, a man called. He said, "Look I don't want to make this call, but my mom said I need to do the right thing. I'm calling you to let you know I have your dog. My daughter loves him so much I didn't want to make this call." I didn't care. At midnight, I drove to his house and picked up Tofu. PS... His mom saw Tofu's pic on Craigs List & Facebook. So glad they united! We love happy ending!
