I am 71 years old, and beginning about age 30 I made it a point of only having rescue dogs. One year ago my daughter found a stray that was freezing, starving and could hardly walk due to hair so badly knotted. I kept him, and he has become a fantastic companion, more intelligent than many humans. He never lets me get out of his sight, when I do he comes looking for me. He is family, and treated as such

nice work mate. sounds like you and the dog found the perfect match.
I adopted an adult shelter dog 11 years ago. I filled out an application and had to wait a week to take her home. I went to see her every day during my lunch hour. I bought her a collar and one day when I visited her I put it on for sizing. Once I got the collar out of my purse she was so excited. At one time she had been in a home and she realized what that collar meant. I will never forget the excitement in her eyes when she saw that collar. She is sleeping at my feet right now.

** Benny Update ** Benny is doing just fine. He is living the life that every dog should live - loved and well cared for. His road traveled, at least to us his current owners post this video, was long and no doubt questionable at times. But fortunately for him/us his loving family, our roads intersected with one another. Benny will turn 4-years old this year. He has filled out nicely weight wise whilst adjusting to his "true" forever home. His black coat has turned into the most beautiful brindle color you ever seen - matching in part his gorgeous brown eyes. Benny spends his days lounging around the house - sleeping on any bed or couch he wishes, hanging out in his large fenced-in yard chasing squirrels, taking car rides, and whenever he can get it, getting his belly scratched or rubbed. We hug and kiss Benjamin every day endlessly, and tell him how lucky that he is, but truthfully it is us his adoptive family who are the lucky ones.

30 days after he was turned in at the shelter, I went to check on the feral dog that had bitten my hand. (No Rabies) I swear that was the happiest I've ever seen a dog when he laid eyes on me. So $70 later for shots, neutering and vaccinations....I've got a dog! He had been so frightened, and happily became a loyal lap dog. We've been together 10 years. No regrets.

@antiunclematter9502: Your snarky response shows you missed @paulwalker1793's point. When someone is speaking from the heart, why do you find it necessary to disrespect their feelings? It's a wonder any animal survives this human-centric world of ours. Fortunately, there are people who recognize that animals have the right to live their own best life without the ignorance, apathy, arrogance, and frequent horrific treatment by humans. But along with the empathy and sympathy, worry and concern, those people who voice their feelings about not being able to 'solve the problem,' deal with the frustration of knowing all their efforts and concerns do not make a dent in the need they recognize on a daily basis. It makes their hearts hurt. Voicing the pain they feel may bring them just a tiny bit of relief. Why will you deny them that?

@@JohnnySack16 it's a shame that you have rejected rescue dogs and only buy purebred. Most places, these rescues are not free because these innocent animals often have health problems or injuries that need to be addressed. Most rescues neuter or spay their animals as well as microchip them. However, most of these animals make the most loving pets. I shudder to think how many animals have been killed at high kill places (I refuse to call them shelters, because they don't shelter their animals) that have been denied the opportunity to show what wonderful pets they could be.

Thank you for sharing what so many of us feel. Did we save the dog or did the dog save us? I suspect the answer is that we saved each other. It is a deal with the devil whenever we give our hearts to our dogs: ultimately we will be devastated with grief when they leave us far too soon. But our memories live on forever. About the squirrels: be assured that my former shelter boy will hunt them assiduously. I'd like to think that his hunt will be in your own boy's honor. Us former shelter dogs chasing squirrels are a fierce brotherhood. VIVA THE SQUIRREL HUNTERS! And thank you for sharing your story. It is a help to me.

I took a dog much like this from a boarding kennel. Dogs do NOT 'wait in shelters' ... they have no choice... they are animals that are helpless. The dog I took been abandoned property and just before a Thanksgiving he would be taken to a county shelter to be destroyed. I took him in... as the companion female dog he was with was adopted fast. Both were abandoned as the owner could not pay the boarding fees... This male dog has never been any trouble for me and I learned to train dogs in classes and took 3 of my own through CGC certification. This dog appears to be Labrador crossed with an APBT and is very toy-oriented and like snacks. So he is easy to train quickly.

Hello I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness, prosperity, love and peace all over the world. I would love us to be good friends in honesty and in trust so as time goes on it will bring something great for us in the future, hope you don't mind? I'm Engineer Graham Bolt from Nashville Tennessee, where are you from?
We also adopted our pet Maltese who had been re-home 3 times. We are the 4th owners. BB is adorable but he bites... very vehemently for a toy dog. My family and I had gotten "scar- souvenirs" and were both "shock" and "anger" on him initially. However, we forgave him quickly too as we believed he has suffered a lot in the past. 9 months later, BB is still with us, this time happier, secured and loyal, ... thank you for trusting us and being part of our family ❤❤🐶🐶🐶

Ahhh the memories of the day we picked up Rosie from the pound. When we first got her out for her “interview” as soon as she was outside she leaped into the air, almost higher than either of us. Then we went away to talk about it, then stopped by a pet store for the necessary supplies, and returned to the pound to collect her. We worked there for three weeks and month after we finished work I got to adopt the dog. It is only months after the rescue, and getting to better know him that I realized how much that dog was understanding during this three weeks work. How beautifully it is put in English - crossed the bridge... I have many cats by now on the other side of the bridge. I am still waiting for my very own and very special dog to find me on this side.
When I went to our local shelter to pick up our cat, I told the staff that I wanted to pay the adoption fees for a dog and a cat that had been there the longest or were the hardest to place in a loving home. The dog was hyperactive and the cat was quite old. I didn't want either to live the rest of their lives in a cage - esp. the cat because all of the cats (except kittens) were in a small, dark room in cages from floor to ceiling & it reeked of urine. The kittens were kept in a large well lit room off of the lobby. My cat was so traumatized by the shelter that for the first couple of weeks, she laid in my lap, with her paws wrapped around my arm, hugging me. Once she realized this was her home, she then sat up straight and tall like the diva I knew she was. I checked the adoption pics every day hoping the dog and cat I sponsored would find their forever home. Within 1 week, both had been adopted. I also complained about the odors and cramped, dark room where the adult cats were at. Because of my complaint, they filed for a grant and are now building an addition to house adult cats only.

I’d rather there be a shortage of dogs because every single family wanted at least 2 of them. Dogs were always meant to be with mankind. That’s no more of a leap than churches’ having their Sunday Schools teaching our kids that God created Eve from a rib he removed from Adam. I’ve had dogs all my life. In several cases, my dogs were smarter than some of the people I’ve known L. And they’re most definitely better behaved than most people. He was a 10 month old, three-legged, German Shepherd-Black Lab mix. The rescue had him for a little over a month, with no one ever stopping to meet him or talk to him. I’ll never know for sure how he lost his leg so young; the vet thinks he was probably hit by a car bc she could tell the amputation was surgical and well done. Sam never knew there was anything different about him. He thought every other dog just had a weird extra leg! 😆 He swam like a fish and ran like the wind! Thank you for overlooking the missing leg and adopting your "best bud" anyway! Far to many people look for perfection when adopting an animal, never realizing that the 'imperfect' ones are not only the ones who need us the most but are also the ones who will give us the most love because we accepted them when everyone else turned away. I've had several 'rescue buddies' over the years and I always look for the ones I think no one else will want. I figure they're the ones who need me the most. Not a one of them ever disappointed me.
Our black lab was a stray running the streets of San Antonio, TX. He was eventually caught & rescued from a high kill shelter by a retriever group. We were looking for a golden, but as soon as we met our dog, we knew it was meant to be. Our kittens were days (or less) away from getting euthanized. A cat rescue snatched them up and started making phone calls. Two of the kittens were really bonded, so we ended up with 2 spayed sisters that play and get into trouble every day. All 3 critters have done wonders for the autistic members of our household. They can read us like a book and know exactly when to step in.

You`re a great man,Paul Walker! God Will Bless You.
God bless this dog and the people who adopted him.
I went to a shelter last year, looking for a puppy. There was an adult dog in the very last cage in the shelter. It was dark, so I couldn't see him well. While the rest of the dogs jumped up and down excitedly at my presence, he just stood there. I don't know why it struck me so hard, but I asked about him. He had been in the shelter since late June. It was mid August. My heart told me to get him. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made! We have determined that he is an elderly dog. When we first got him home, he was shy and standoffish to everyone, including us. But he was very sweet. As time passed, my neighbors and friends started commenting on the difference in him, from when I first brought him home. He welcomes people who come to our house, instead of standing back in the shadows. We recently got two kittens. He is a little scared of them, but he watches over them, and I have no fear that he will harm them. He is just perfect for me. Don't discount older dogs when you go to the shelter. My old boy is happiest when I pick up the keys to our side by side, and take him for a run down to the pond for a swim. He may be old, but he still runs and plays hard.

When I got there they told me I wasn't right for him because he needed a yard and hated cats. I walked down the line of kennels and my eyes settled on a sad sweet girl surrounded by loud hyper dogs barking and clamoring for my attention. One of whom put his front paws on top of her head to get closer to me. She just let him. She looked so defeated. Reminded me of Eeyore. She came home with me and changed my life. I'm crying like a baby watching Benny's pure joy. We rescued our two girls three years ago. It was as if they knew they were ours when we first saw them. They jumped around and raced out to our truck with that, "What took you so long? Let's go home!" Look...life would be empty without them. Adopt a shelter pet today...your best friend is waiting for you. Go!

One of the most moving, beautiful sights, and emotions for anyone to see. Freedom and love!
Our family loves animals, especially cats and dogs. Two small dogs and two cats sleep with my wife and me on our bed while others sleep in different parts of our house. Most of our pets were given to us by their previous owners who were moving away. Many message us to adopt their dogs, some of which were worth hundreds to thousands of dollars. They said they would like to entrust their dogs to us though other people wanted to buy them. However, we refused because wr know we can only take care for 6 dogs and 6 cats. 🙂
So precious. Isn’t it amazing that we have the ability to cause such joy in other creatures?

This should convince anybody that we need to do better by our animal friends in life. I can't go to zoos because I believe humans are on the wrong side of the cage. Going to be a great dog for somebody!

Then everyone who doesn't eat animals must be angels.... 🥰😇 because we force into existence 100 billion land animals no different from this dog in their capacity to love, to be frightened, to suffer and to feel pain..... and then we throw them into a short life of INTENSE PAIN MUTILATION CONFINEMENT TORTURE until we force them into DEATH TRUCKS for a journey that sometimes lasts for days without water or food and we MASSACRE the terrified animals mercilessly - all for a sandwich

No, you're not better better than meat eaters, you're definitely more arrogant though. That's like saying people driving green cars are angels because they care about the environment for the animals so they can breath clean air. Or what about people that don't want kids? They're angels as well since they're not contributing to the over-crowding population that's taking away land for animals to live. I could keep going with this game.

Unfortunately, that isn't at all true, and the many re-abandoned dogs (and cats) in just the USA alone are testament to that. Many people are absolute jerks who just want to get a dog for a short time, for whatever twisted, selfish, sick reason they may have, and then they either return the animal to the shelter, or they start abusing it physically, and do other terrible things. By no means are "all" rescue people, let alone families, "saints"!!

I am now 70 years old, so far all 7 of my dogs have been rescued dogs. They lived for a long time, 17-18 years. Even a large Belgian shepherd lived for 15 years. I was hospitalized 3 years ago during the covid epidemic, which was a big problem to find out who would take care of my last dog and cat, who was also 19 years old. In the hospital, 2 doctors had rescued dogs who were brought in and taken to the patients from time to time. These two dogs healed me when they faithfully sat by my bed as if it was their job. They didn't go to anyone but me. Once I was very sick and one of the dogs got up and went out, and after a few minutes its owner, the doctor, appeared. I was surprised and thought about what this dog, who is not mine, has only known me for a few days, has understood. I heard on the phone that mine has become gloomy at home and is not eating, just lying down. I recovered from my severe fever in two weeks because I knew that mine would be waiting at home and starve to death if I didn't see her for a long time. The two dogs knew that I needed to recover, so they guarded me steadfastly. By now, all my dogs are watching me from heaven, but two cats appeared, banging on the door and window until I let them in. they have been sleeping at my feet ever since.

Have always adopted shelter dogs. They are the best. They somehow "know" you saved them, and their love and loyalty knows no limits. Every year when the date of our adoption rolls around, we celebrate it as "Gotcha Day."
