Losing everything is the perfect opportunity | Arash Aazami | TEDxLancasterU

In his talk Arash shares about his personal journey and how losing everything can give the opportunity to win anything.
Arash Aazami founded the world's first energy interdependence company: BAS - Benefit to All Stakeholders, which quickly grew into a serious alternative to conventional energy companies and became one of The Netherlands fastest growing companies and whose business model, the Path to Zero, won two categories at 2014 MIT Climate CoLab Challenge. He recently resigned from the board of his company to dedicate his time to empower people and organisations to find and utilise their full potential.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Most people who visited this video want to know how one survives losing everything. That is a very important thing when you are in stress or depressed, and feeling suicidal. This video title was a let down - this most definitely was not the right title. Please change it. To others: I do not know how to say "Hang in there" - each one has their pain written in blood. But, you guys made me realize that no matter what I lose (money, fame, power) , I will always have my family - and that is valuable enough. Those who can somehow pull through - I fold my hands in salutation. Hang in there please! Our troubles have no right to win over us.

I fell in a coma after a car accident in September 2005 while at university. I was never meant to survive. I wake up after 15 days to be diagnosed a quadriplegic. I started moving in half a month. I recovered well enough to return to university in Sept, 2006 for my doctor to tell me I could only return in Sept. 2011. I didn't listen, I stayed and graduated in April 2011. The doctor never spoke t me again. You can achieve anything you want to, just believe in yourself.

When someone "loses everything", they don't typically get a lot of job offers, let alone job offers that they can afford to turn down over and over. They'd be on the street, starving. I suppose, though, that "everything" is relative. To a person with cancer, I haven't "lost everything" if I lose my home, job, children, and relationship. That being said, I don't think that most people can relate to this message at all. Most people simply can't identify with the idea that they'd ever be offered a position as the head of an energy company, especially when they've been struggling. I'd bet that most people who watch this, can relate to the title of the vid, but they move on to the next vid right after he talks about that part. It's like watching a Senator talk about how he doesn't have enough vacation days.

neillattz thank you for your insightful and valuable reaction. You are absolutely right: "losing everything" is as relative as anything. My "everything" left me with food, a home and numerous other things that many others lack, and deserve nonetheless. Therefore it is absolutely incomparable to the amount of loss that millions of others suffer. In the context of this talk, however, I did not mean to emphasize how much I lost or suffered. That is irrelevant. What I meant to emphasize is the principle that crisis is a turning point. In every crisis there are equal amounts of danger and opportunity. What we do with any crisis is our choice. This applies on a personal level, but also for organizations, communities, companies, countries. Again: thank you for your reaction. I value your openness and insight very much, and it helps me understand more also.

+Arash Aazami You can see this video has close to 30 thousand views, only about 300 likes, and not even 30 comments. That actually is pretty much the rates for most KZread videos. What I mean is, most people simply passively watch things, some participate a little, and very few will actually take the time to address points critically. They may be "haters", or they may be people with honest, valid criticism. I know that marketing techniques are a key factor to anything, and is widely, intensely used in media, and that a "catchy" title is very important in terms of KZread videos and TED talks. So I already expect some issues "less intense" than the video's title. But personally I just don't like stuff that somewhat downplays others indirectly. There are many people who lose a lot, really a lot, they may lose (as in death) their whole family at once, lose all their money, their home. There's just too many people trapped in very difficult situations, and these types of titles are somewhat offensive (in my view) to these people, as if they are lazy or stupid (although there are also many lazy and stupid people, surely). I could rewrite this title in 5 different ways that would make it more honest and just as much effective. But, anyway, most people do not care, and those who have lost everything surely will not be here watching TED talks to be offended, since they lost everything, and likely don't even have a computer anymore...

Hi Anni, you are right, in hindsight I would have titled the story differently. It was never intended to be of help for people that are in dire straits. My straits were far less dire than many other people's. Key message would have been the importance of energy access for 2,9 billion people so that they can unlock their potential to contribute to their own lives, that of their families and the ultimately the world. An insight I would never have gathered without losing a little bit myself, but having said that, I always had food on my plate and had a little bit of a professional track record which enabled me to receive job offers. And yes, I got lucky with both an opportunity and a purpose. My apologies. I wish you the best in your life.

A lot of people like to overemphasize their losses or their beginnings, to make it look like they're real strugglers, and came a long way. When actually they were already in a good situation, and had a few set backs, and basically went back to their natural level (socially/economically). This guy was obviously rich, chances are his father was already working in the oil industry. I say that because his last name is persian (and the middle east has nothing good but oil...) and the fact he lived in Niger when he was a kid. Turns out that petroleum was found in Niger in the 70's, and exploration began in those days with Texaco and Esso and Elf setting offices there in the 70's and 80's... That would explain why a woman (his mother) left the Netherlands with two small kids to live in a God forsaken land like Niger. I haven't found much info on this guy, but it says somewhere he founded his first energy company at 21... that's not really a "normal" type of company for a 21 year old to found. That's also far from his "early beginnings as a musician" as he makes it seem like in this speech. Also, it's not like he was jobless, wandering through bars. He was already in the industry, and knew a lot of people in the industry (assuming his father was in the industry, and that he really found an energy company at 21, as it seems). But, I mean, this is TEDx talks... so it's expected that people embelish things to make it more appealing to world wide audiences, and although this guy does have an unique life, this storyline of "poor kid from Niger who became a musician and then transformed himself into a magnate CEO of energy companies" is totally not the reality.

+CzechRiot Great reply and thorough analysis, but wrong (you couldn't have known). Just a little background info to clarify things: my father left Iran for Dubai in the early seventies because of him being a Baha'i, a strongly oppressed religious minority, and came to The Netherlands in 1975 and I was born in '77. He worked as a medical analyst for a Dutch NGO in Niger fighting malaria between 1980 and '88. We were never materially rich, but I do consider us to be very rich nonetheless, albeit in the immaterial sense. Our family has never had anything to do with the oil industry. The statement that I founded an energy company at 21 is incorrect. At 22 I started my first business: a webdesign agency in Rotterdam. I founded my energy company BAS in 2010, at 32 years old, and left it in 2015. Lastly: I do not agree with the title of this talk, it was not my choice. I would have liked to change it for "how a musician ended up trying to change the energy industry" or something along these lines. In any case: thanks a lot for your extensive replies and I wish for you to do exactly what you would do if all the work in the world were voluntary.

Arash Aazami Good that you replied with the real world facts. I like to sort of "create stories" for people based on the little evidence I have available, but it's more of an exercise in hypothetical thinking, and often I try to check later on how right or wrong I was (when I do that in the real world, with people I just met for example). It's also a way to refine my judgment, test my own heuristics. In this case, my second guess would be that your parents were diplomats, and third guess that it was some humanistic health related work. But I treat everything as probabilities. There will always be the times when we're dealing the 1% case events. But there is a website with that false information about you starting an energy company at 21.

I have no plans at all only God's plans He made sure of this recently. Whenever I planned something then something else would happen to change my plans and my plans did not happen too often. I planned to keep this position I had for a couple of years. God had different plans for me to get to a point where I could no longer stay at this position it was quit or eventually be let go either why the position would be gone. After I left the position on my own many were let go and eventually fired as well. If I would have waited I would have been in a bad situation looking for something quick which would bring stress. God will force all to depend on Him because He supplies our needs through Christ Jesus. Now I am happy even though I have no idea what God is doing I know He is doing great things. All my needs are taken care of, I do not lack anything unlike before, and I am excited now about getting up to see what He is going to do each day. God has to push us to receive better so we do not settle for less living comfortable with the same daily task doing the same thing. It is different now God has forced everyone to put total trust in Him. You may start off wanting certain plans in the day but somehow you end up doing something totally different. Whatever plans anyone makes God will make better. Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. Proverbs 19:21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel-that will Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

I feel like I have lost everything, even though I graduated recently with professional degree with no job I’m in my late 20s, and family pressures to get married, no idea if I should take up a job or go for some other career path. Just sitting at home idle makes me feel worthless and worried. I’m living off of my dad’s money. Parents are becoming old and I’m sure they are worried that I haven’t taken up any responsibility of the family or earnings, I really don’t understand should I have trust in god or universe, or blame my lazyness or for being unlucky, I realllly am lost in life. I just wish some miracle happens in my life and good things start to happen to me or atleast my parents !! I feel like I’m in dumpster 🥺oh god, I’m crying while writing this down. Please universe have mercy up on me and put my life on track. I beg you

Hi @catherinemulenga2234 I don’t know where you are in your recovery, or if you’ll ever see this. But I really hope that this reply reaches you. As someone who is only now starting to come out of months of debilitating depression from having lost everything in my professional life, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that once you’ve made up your mind to fight the negative forces that are fighting to take you down, then it’s not over for you. Not by a long shot. That business that you started, and the time that you spent building and operating said business, no doubt gave you loads of experience at many different levels. You started out with a knowledge of how to work independently in your particular field. That knowledge allowed you start and manage your own business. Then, the debacle with the people who later became involved in the business, no doubt gave you immeasurable experience regarding operations from a partnership or group standpoint. You have loads of experience in both, what to do and what not to do next time. Hindsight is indeed a blessing. Altogether, your past wins + your recent losses = a golden opportunity. You are now in a position to create a new niche. That business that you ran was run from only one particular angle. But now, using all of your experience gained both before and during this loss, perhaps you can establish a new way of operating in the same field, which has not (or barely) been explored by any of the competitors in your area. It’s a start that may take you further than you can ever imagine right now. Believe this stranger from the internet when I say, in a few short years, you will be laid back in a recliner chair laughing about this experience, as you enjoy your favorite drink. Please please please, just don’t give up! ❤

False allegations limit my ability to get employed. I made 250k a year for 15 years. After losing my job. I found her with another man. Can't see my children. Energy is not an option for me. I can only say the same as Emil Goubasarian said. I'm in the same boat at you have once been in. I've lost both my home, and my income. Ontop of it I've had a rough childhood where I've had to mostly be my own parent. But I know it will be okay. I want to dedicate my life towards helping others, and bettering our enviroment, and our planet. Hopefully I can do just that through launching a business when I feel ready. Watching your talk gave me goosebumps, because what you spoke about is something that deeply resonates with me as well. You are a huge inspiration, because you have already done much of what I plan to do in the future. Watching your talk also reminds me that I'm not alone in having these grand visions. Dear Robin, Your explanation of your first comment really touches me. Thank you. You obviously know the saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". I do not agree to that completely. What does not kill you CAN make you stronger, depending on how you choose to deal with it. You seem to choose to deal with your hardships in a very powerful way. I am convinced you will get there, and contribute greatly to the advancement of yourself, your loved ones, and society as a whole. Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá'i faith gave me this beautifully profound insight: "Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity".

Later income from Something you enjoy doing 😊 3) join a Club …. Dance or sports or Cycling or art…BUT mix and Speak with Other PEOPLE men and women. 3) good Food & exercise ( no Smoking vapping exes drinking alcohol ( alcohol 1 one ☝️ night per week and don’t get DRUNK. That is the Start, when you do this your Brain 🧠 Starts to work, and WORK MUCH BETTER….i know I’ve did this 3 times in my Life 👍 GOT FOR IT 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😎
