    What I really like about this movie is the cynical ending.Usually,in these types of movies,in the end our "hero" loses everything,goes to jail etc. or has a change of heart whatever.... Not here. *SPOILERS* In the end,Yuri gets arrested after his wife rats him out on the feds.But it´s all good,because he calls up his connections at the Pentagon,for which he does the dirty work supplying the weapons to various "friendly freedom fighters" *wink* and they bail him out.In the last scene,we see him somewhere in N.Africa running weapons eh.. I mean "umbrellas". War is my business and business is booming. Like Yuri says,by breaking the 4th wall in the end: "governments need people like me,who can do the dirty work for them."

I watched the commentary on it and was pretty surprised to find out that in the scene when Yuri and his uncle are in one of the armory storage units, the director said that all those guns in that shot were real AK-47's, because it was cheaper to buy the real rifles than the prop rifles. I also didn't know that the kid working on the helicopter was Nic's real son until I watched that commentary.

    Lord of War is a gem of a flick. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and today is the first day I'm learning that it was a domestic box office failure. I loved the movie so much I always just kinda assumed it had done well. I love the way you described it as a gangster movie because that's the most apt description. While watching it, you feel the same way you felt watching Scarface or, later, American Gangster. I also think it's probably Jared Leto's best performance on record. Unfortunately this movie was grossly underappreciated by the american critics and I think that it may be. Why? Well I might because the fact that the ultimate villain in the movie was not a Yuri Orlov, not the arms dealers, but the US president, which is in Hollywood cinematography a literal blasphemy! Just think about it? What is the last Hollywood blockbuster that you saw and that portrays a US president as anything less then almost perfectly honourable hero, not to say even saint? In Hollywood there is a great tradition of making a story (or propaganda?) of US president as a valiant man who, whatever the party he may be in, is always ready to sacrifice himself for the others, no matter who they were. He often saves the day (or planet), is an leader of "free world", fighting against the tyrants of the Earth (or galaxy) and is almost or even completely without any seeable sins. But NOT in this movie! Here US president is someone who funds and equips the terrorists, who breaks the law to release world wide infamous illegal arms dealers, a man who is responsible for the deaths of millions! And Orlov clearly points out at the end of movie that whatever he did, that everything evil that he done through the movie, the US president and the system are doing on like a hundred times larger scale! Yuri even says that the US president is actually selling so much weapons and ammunition in a day that he couldn't sell that amount in a year! The US president, in this movie, is basically the worst of the worst kind of people! And that might be the reason why it failed with the critics in US and why wasn't even represented in an Oscar awards.

    The movie, in my opinion and more importantly, is also about gun and war culture criticism created by the United States over the Last 50-60 years. It's not false to say that most conflicts in our modern history were one way or another fueled by the United States. In cinema, most movies portrait the USA as the good guy, the one that has the decisive role, the leader of the world country and wins pretty much every fight. So when you do a movie that shows flaws on high standart patriotism country where guns and the military are inherited in their way of life, It isn't going to do okay. Also, I don't know why but It seems like in that country admitting to wrong doing is a sign of weakness, a taboo conversation and all that matters is being at the top.

  • @justinian-the-great

    @justinian-the-great

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@TheGDiaX I totally agree with you. You know one thing is interesting to me. It's that, although I live in Serbia, which until recently was the country with the second biggest guns per capita ratio (the first is US of course), here there was never a developed gun loving culture, like in the US. As for wars, I totally agree on that US and it's allies/puppets started or fueled most of the conflicts since the WW2. It somehow is strange that always those that start or fuel the most wars in history are also the least ready to accept the guilty for doing that. The movie strikes right there where it hurts for such country and, of course, the people and critics rejected it. Being at the top, as you say, is another strange thing. I personally never understood why would someone be proud to have a massive empire? I mean, they know that it was built on wars of conquest, they know that it is commiting war crimes (not to use the word genocide) and that people in your colonies are oppressed, but they are still proud of it and proud of being at the top?! Truly, as you said, I don't understand such logic.

    In Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle the US president is depicted as a bad person. When the switch happened and you suddenly see what the president was actually doing I remember laughing my ass off in the theatre, and being the absolute only person in the theatre laughing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I can see what you mean about that not landing well with American audiences. It's too bad. It's an aspect of our citizenry that is poorly explored.

Bush and Trump were all shat upon more times than I care to count, but he has a point, you know, when not viewing shows and/or movies that take actual historical presidents into account like bush and trump, but instead give us a nameless one/unhistorical one, most of the time they are what he described, infallible paragons of freedom, democracy and altruism.

    I dont think thats true, I mean alot of the popular films in the world today are in one small way or another a critism of guns, violence, or even the United States as a whole. I think it was a poor marketing department, even the film itself ends with a direct shot at not just the united states but other countries as well, In fact its my favorite part of the movie, showing that even if you stop someone like Yuri, the countries will keep them alive and well. WHILE PRIVATE GUNRUNNERS CONTINUE TO THRIVE, THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ARMS SUPPLIERS ARE THE U.S., U.K., RUSSIA, FRANCE AND CHINA THEY ARE ALSO THE FIVE PERMANENT MEMBERS OF TEH U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL

    Great pull, I came across this randomly online a few years ago and loved it. Cage actually feels understated for parts of it due to the melodramatic intensity of arms dealing. He'll never not be a big presence though so having a role that is inherently weighty is perfect for him. It really helped to sell how evil his character was.

    One of my favorite movies. When it came out, I set up a midnight screening for a few friends, in my home theater room, and we all loved it, as it helped us see past the wonky aspect ratio. My wife and I still pull it out of the rack, and sit and enjoy it a couple times a year. Same with Con Air, The Rock, Ghost Rider, and one.of his early films, Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Two good ones, many have never seen with Cage in them are Kiss of Death, and Raising Arizona. May just be who I hang out with, but I have yet to find anyone who didn't enjoy Lord.of War.

  • @SatansYardsale
    @SatansYardsale4 жыл бұрын

    Lord of War's opening sequence is so goddamn good it rivals openings like Jurassic Park, The Hustler, and The Dark Knight. Few movies grab you by the balls right from the get go like Lord of War does. The fact they had Cage do a running monotone narrative during the movie gives it this melancholic quality that contrasts the horrific violence making the movie seem both reverent and irreverent at once. It's like he thought he cared, but realized he doesn't.

    I remember reading Ethan Hawke saying that! I think about that from time to time and it's great to see you talk about it here! I thought I had read that as an interview in an old issue of Rolling Stone, but regardless, it's was cool how honest Ethan was about it. No sugar coating, so we truly believe one of the best actors ever was impressed by Cage, who himself is another of the best. Glad you talked about this movie!! Hell, the first trailer I seen had me thinking Cage would be some type of superhero/villain, and when I first watched it I was waiting for the big reveal only to realize I had the wrong idea of what the movie was even about lol.
