World War Z - WTF Happened To This Movie?

Ойын-сауық

Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
In this episode, we take a look at the zombie action flick World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale, Peter Capaldi, David Morse, Ruth Negga and Daniella Kertesz. Directed by Marc Forster, this globe-spanning zombie yarn is adapted from the novel of the same written by Max Brooks, although it's seemingly mostly in name only as the story changed drastically for the big screen. With all manner of production issues, a reshot ending and clashes with the director and producer, Brad Pitt, it seemed like WWZ would be a box office disaster, but it ended up being a major success despite all the production woes. So, let's find out WTF Happened to World War Z!

Brooks' novel is a chilling accurate representation of how our world would respond to the outbreak; he did his homework on our cultures, religions, economy and politics then unleashed the undead. Of course, Hollywood thought we just wanted zombies. Its about everything else that made the book compelling.

I've thought the same thing. Each episode would open with the unseen journalist setting up his equipment, maybe putting down a pack of smokes and an ashtray, and then the person being interviewed would start off answering some questions about themselves as the scene changed to their particular story. Imagine the possibilities for telling multiple perspective stories about pivotal events (like the Battle of Yonkers). The movie felt like such a missed opportunity.

If it was just a generic zombie movie, ok, good entertainment. But as a movie adaptation of Max Brooks' novel, it leaves out nearly every single defining element of the book. And yes, even the "slow zombies" (in both transformation and movement) are one important element of the book. As it allows for the build-up of tension, the feeling of looming doom and the nerve-tearing inability to properly react to what seems obvious. And also it is an important element of counter strategies and tactics. Gosh, now I need to re-read the book for the, like, 25th time. Have to find out whom of my friends I lent it to :D

Remember the one about the Chinese submarine captain? The one on the ISS? The one about the downed pilot? All not in the movie. They should have just made a tv-series and followed the book more; have a reporter traveling the post pandemic world interviewing people in different countries and hearing their experiences during the war. Every episode could feature a new cast, location and they would all stand alone from each other. The book has some seriously varied stories, settings and characters - there is so much content to draw from and expand on, this movie barely managed to depict 5% of the overall book experience.

While far from being a masterpiece, I really enjoyed world war z. It had some very astounding scenes, and I liked how the focus was on CURING it. In all zombie movies, nobody freaking cares about curing it. It's always about surviving. About time to see someone TRYING TO DO SOMETHING over it. The interpretations were amazing too, even the kids were really... well. They were ok, that's more than you usually can expect from children.

I really don't like this movie, and I'm lowkey angry the book wasn't the plot. It was practically a Brad Pitt vehicle like Tom Cruise did to the Mummy. The zombies were PG-13 watered down generic runners ripped off from 28 Days and Dawn of the Dead, instead of the Romero-style zombies mixed with Return of the Living Dead, where they rose from the ground, the ocean, and consumed in slow to moderate swarms. None of the chilling accounts in the book shone, but instead, we got slapped with cartoonish CGI. They might have cherry-picked references and easter eggs but why even bother. This movie was packaged for teenage girls who would brag, "I like scary movies! I saw World War Z! Date me."

Brad Pitt happened to it. He took a wonderful book, cast himself as the protagonist/narrator (who didn't participate in ANY of the events-he was chronicling events that happened 10 years earlier) and changed, oh, everything. The zombies were slow, not fast. They moaned, not screeched. And people didn't turn in seconds after being bitten-they died and reanimated hours later. And so many interesting side stories were missed-the Chinese nuclear missile sub was the best of the lot. But if you didn't read the book you'll never know.

Or if they fell into the sea they crawled on the seabed until they reached shore. World War Z didn’t need a big star. Tell the story just like in the book: by showing the short story experiences of various people that when viewed as a whole it would tell the full story. It would be even better if it used relatively unknown actors. This movie was WWZ in name only. When I first read the book, I was surprised to find out Max was Mel’s son. They ruined this movie just like they did with I Am Legend. Read the book to understand the impact (and irony) of the title.

Before this video, I never heard about the books or the politics behind the movies. All I know is, when i watched World War Z, it's one hell of a zombie movie, probably still the best zombies movie right now.

Read the book. It is awesome. There is political context and social commentary, yes. Brooks does not beat you over the head with it.

Ad a movie on its own, it's okay. But as a book adaptation it's fucking terrible

Brooks' commentary on the inability of governments to deal with a pandemic proved to be all too accurate. I really enjoyed the book, particularly humanity's fightback.

The books, led me to get the audiobooks which were magnificently rendered by many. The stories of 20 different people and their experiences during the outbreak we captivating. The movie on the other hand was about Pitt. Then on the plane, he alone decides to take a frag out, without regard to anyone else and destroy the plane in the air.
