Looking for a Colt Lightning Clone with a modern action Its out there
Спорт
Every time I have been in a conversation about the Colt Model 1877 DA…AKA the Lightning or the Thunderer, someone will say,
“If somebody would make a clone of that with a modern, reliable action, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!”
And everyone in the group nods their head.
When tell people that gun is already out there they don’t believe me, but it is…
High Standard made it from the 1950s until the 1970s. It’s called the Double Nine.

Great video, bringing back memories of the late 50's when I lusted after a Double Nine in the display case at the Gambles Hardware store in town. Never got one, even at 75 years old, I still want one.

Take heart, Carl. I just found mine in a pawn shop last year. There's hope for you yet.
A lightning in .357 would be awesome

They should make it in analogues to the original calibers: "Thunderer" in .41 Rem. magnum; the "Lightning" in .357 Magnum; and the "Rainmaker" in .327 Federal Magnum
I'm on board for the email campaign. I've been looking at the Diamondback since it came out, and I really like it. Everyone reviewing it has been doing so from the idea of it being an alternative to the Ruger Wrangler or the Heritage Rough Rider, but I think they're missing the nostalgia late 50's western aspect. Great video, thank you.

Why don’t they make them in centre fire too? The only other thing is I would love to see a break action Colt, and just the standard loading gate method. As I’m sure the originals didn’t have a swing out cylinder ?

@@kylethedalek Not exactly what you're looking for, but North American Arms makes a top-break single-action .22 revolver called the Ranger II. There's an option with swapable LR/Magnum cylinders and a 4" barrel.

@@johndpearson64I hope they do. I wish they would offer the longer barrels too.
probably 12 years ago i ran into a guy at a gravel pit/ shooting range that had one of those high standard double 9 with the birds head grip. i had a single six, some flipper targets and a brick of .22. we traded guns off and on and burned up that whole brick. i never knew what that gun was until i saw this video. ive kicked myself for years for not writing down what that gun was so i could look for one. it was a lot of fun to shoot. thanks for the video.
I can't believe you were thinking about a 1877 clone. I've wondered for the longest time why Uberiti hasn't come out with a improved clone of some early colt DA revolvers. My guess there was some political or legal silliness behind it. Having a period correct DA revolver could start a new cowboy action division.

Each type of design has to have govt licence to build in italy from what im told 🧐 Kadio told me bout it 🧐
WOW that Diamondback Sidekick looks like a winner! I want one! They must be just coming out with them because in the 15 min I had to search online they all are either “arriving soon” or “out of stock”. Kind of like when the Ruger Wrangler was first announced.
This is like finding out there is one more Christmas present that you missed under the tree ... Let the search Begin ! Thanks Mr Bellevue!
First handgun I ever fired was a nickeled Double 9 of my grandfather's. It's still in the family, but my cousin owns it. Lots of great memories in that hunk of steel! Thanks for bringing them back to my mind! Happy new year!
A few years back I discovered 22lr shooting again, now especially when ammo became hard to find and expensive, I picked up 22 lr again and became addicted, I just can't get enough of it.
Everyone needs to email Diamondback and suggest that they change the grip style.
I have a steel frame double 9 with both cylinders and a nickel Sentinel aluminum frame that does not have a return spring on the cylinder ejector. Both guns are fun to shoot. Never thought of making a 1877 clone, but yours looks the part.
My dad has this same gun but with a longer barrel and squared grip. It's the one I learned to shoot as a kid. It had a hellish double action trigger pull.

I have a double nine, it was my grandfathers gun he carried it in the truck with him for decades he was a truck driver
I have a blued Double Nine with the standard style grip frame with genuine plastic stag grips. Great shootin little gun.
Thanks for this vid. In my teenage years I too longed for a double 9. Really needed a 22 revolver for my trapline. Eventually made due with an H&R model 999 I bought from Coast to Coast. But I always wanted a double 9. That was in the late '70's. Just last year I found a used square back in a local pawn shop and needless to say , it's mine now, chipped fake ivory grip and all. I love it. So glad to see someone bringing it back.
In 86 when I was 16 years old I picked up a high standards 6 shot 22. That was my first gun
I just got an L. A. Jensen cap and ball revolver and am super excited. There were less than 100 made so I doubt even you have shot one. I plan to take it to the range right after I get a .454 ball mold and a bottle of Ballistol. I clean my blackpowder rifle with soapy water, but do not want to risk letting this piece of history rust up.
been looking for one FOREVER. so many people don’t know about this firearm.
Your positivity and enthusiasm and the wide variety of topics you cover made any day you drop a new video a good one!
I bought my Double 9 in the 1970 at Woolco where I was working part time. It's still my favorite .22 revolver. I use HKS 9 shot speed loaders as the only accessory. I've had a sidekick on order since November 23 and haven't heard a peep yet. Really would like to see them come out with knock around rear sights for us older folks like the double 9 has.
I have a Sentinel that I got from my grandfather, love that little gun
Just found this channel and im loving every second of it, thank you for producing these videos sir.

My grandfather used to tend to his trap lines with that same revolver, Id tag along in hopes of getting to shoot it
Very nice! I love it w/the birds head grip, faux ivory or otherwise.
The sidekick looks really nice. I put it on my list. I will email them about making a clone. Thanks Mike.
I had a second series nine, bought for $75 at a long closed army surplus store. It was a fun little knock around gun that ride in my off-road 4runner for years. Loved fanning it! I loaned it to a friend years ago and basically forgot about it. Gonna text him.....
Happy New Year! What a cool gun. Thank you for the tip on the new Diamond Back gun 👍
Ruger now makes a Wrangler with the birds head grip and a 3 3/4 " barrel, but it's single action. I bought the Talo edition that come with a holster and wooden grips.
i always look forward to your videos mike! thank you so much,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
A copy of the 1877 would be great, My H&R Forty Niner Model 949 is as close as I could get. Thanks for the great videos!
There's nothing more fun than a good 22!
A high standard double 9 . Love it. I had one. I loved it. I gave it to my brother.
I just have to say , YOU ARE INTERESTING AND FUN TO WATCH PLUS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ! LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR OTHERS VIDEOS BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN !
I seen ol boy evil Roy lurking around in the background and I new there was going to be a duel nice to see you came on top again thanks for your good videos
Thank you for the history lesson! I just bought it because I thought it was cool. I have several Ruger convertibles, which are all single action. Have a nice nap Evil Roy!
That is so neat. Been awhile since I have shot my 22's. 🤗
I had one about 35 years ago, it was on a brass frame with the octagon barrel. Beautiful gun in 22 mag, but you couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with that thing. It was not my lack of ability because I have shot revolvers and pistols for years. I hated getting rid of it because it was so attractive
Happy and Healthy 2022. These are great guns. Some come in nickel plated with 22LR and 22MAG cylinders. H&R 22s of this vintage are great too. I'm of that vintage, lol.
the double 9 is an awesome 22 revolver i love my h&r 922 i scored it for 150 bucks it has the scrap plastic grips
Ok I just ordered a Diamondback Sidekick from Midway. Their semi autos aren't something I'd own, but I'm SO excited they reproduced the double nine! Reminds me of the Llama mk IV vs the modern Micromax, very similar modern interpretations of a classic design!
Thanks Mike Forgot about these even though I owned one for a decade
I actually like yours more, great show keep them coming. GOD BLESS
Great, Mike.
I have one of those but never knew the official name(double nine) mine is the standard one no birds eye. But the way I came across it was strange. In my teens I had an H$R 22 revolver that was similar but had an extra 22 mag cyl, too. Anyways someone stole it when we were hunting/camping. Then about 3 years later I was deer hunting at a different location and walking down a fire road and right in the middle of the road was a rolled up belt and holster containing the double nine. Never saw anyone else that day so I took it home. Been with me for 30+ years now.
Hi from Syracuse NY brother and thank you for sharing your thoughts and adventures and information
Excellent video, excellent firearm!!
I had double action cap guns and dual holsters in about 1958. I practiced my quick draw. It was replaced by my bicycle. I never liked the noise of guns or the cost of caps. My Dad made me a gun that fired rubber strips from sticks with a clothespin. Silent, but not much range.
First pistol I ever shot was a high standard double 9 that was my father's! Fun!
Love the 22LR. Great video.
great video mike!
They should make a cap and ball version of this.

Always thought the 1858 Remington was a lot like the double 9 in style, tho it's a single action, I'll grant you.
Yup... My dad had one & it was my favorite for quickdraw
Definitely going to get one of those sidekick's when they become more available.
My father bought one in the 60’s while he was in the Air Force. He still has it.
Great video!
Another great video! You make me want theese old guns.
Cool video. I have the Longhorn Double nine unfired but still love it.
Yeah! That sure looked like fun! I'd heard of the new Diamondback revolver. Your write-in campaign sounds like a great idea. Count me in!
Evil Roy thought he was gonna make a clean break for it this year build him self a little snow fort. Swift justice caught up with the rascal. Great video Mike!
Sweet pistol. Great video. I will be looking for one.
We (my shooting pals and myself) shot a lot of 22lr through the pandemic/ammo shortage and I have to say I had forgotten just how much fun it is. Why should kids have all the fun?
Cool looking westerner out fit. You like your in the 1800's. 👍👍👍 I shoot clays in holders like those. I shoot them with a .177 CO2 pellet rifle. I get same results. Hole in middle but once I shoot out the center I shoot the rims then they break.
Grate video, like it
A little known revolver in certain European countries where the 22 LR caliber is the only one allowed for sporting use, such as in Italy. It's not exactly the Colt 1877 Lightning-Thunderer but it's already something similar, a cross between a 1973 Colt and a modern double action revolver. Strange that with the more resistant steels of today they have not faithfully copied it. But the internal springs probably tend to be brittle and machining would still be complicated and expensive. On the other hand, in the Old West Style shooting it is preferred to shoot only in single action. I am well aware that the first American double-action revolver was not initially very successful. They were too used to firing quickly with two hands with satisfactory results at close range but then single action revolvers were overtaken by double action ones.
My dad and I have been looking for a decent example of a double nine for some time. My grandpa used to have one that he gave to his mother, who proceeded to throw it off a bridge into a river. My dad and I want the same one he had, blued with a square butt and stag grips, but all the ones I've seen on Gunbroker are very beat up.
I wish Uberti would come up with a good quality DA percussion revolver.
If they made a birdshead option for the Diamondback Sidekick it would be THIS!!!!
Mike, great video and love the bird head grip. I like this gun and I really like the new one coming out. Not sure if I can make the back strap mod needed, but I would love to try. I have wanted a 22 with the interchangeable cylinders and this looks like the one.
I like that double 9.
Kids? My first handgun was when I was 9 years old. It was a High Standard Sport King
Really cool, but damn do I wish those were available in typical magnum revolver cartridges like .357.
I remember my friend's dad had such a revolver. 9 shot DA/SA .22 Western Style but I could swear it was made by Harrington and Richardson. But that was a very long time ago.

My friend has an H and R like the one you described. He inherited it from his uncle. Sweet!
I wish Uberti, Cimarron or Taylor's would come out the a 6 shot copy of the 77 in 38 Special, that would be absolutely super cool !!!
Great video Mike. At first I thought your Dad bought you that gun in 1959. Then I realized you had to be a toddler when you asked your dad if you could use his Vice to modify it haha. I was only one year old in 1959 myself.
I wish they would make one in 45 Colt with the birds head grip.
Hey Mike, looks like Diamondback is listening, their website shows a birdshead w/ 3" barrel coming this year!
I dont know why Uberti dont make the 1877 pistol. I bet they would make a great copy.
I only have two complaints with the Diamondback Sidekick: It's in .22 Long Rifle (granted it has 9 shots) and that's it, no other calibers on offer, and it's sold out everywhere I look.

My diamond back sidekick came with both 22lr and 22wmr cylinders. As far as I know that is the only way they sell them.
You should get one of the Diamondbacks and make a video of how to shave down the handle and grips for us. :)
Nice pistol work
I've got one of the Diamondback sidekicks on order. I have an old H&R 622 I've owned since I was 15 and wanted something newer.
I’m eager to hear if the Diamondback matches the Double Nine for quality. A Double Nine would be fun. I have a pink Sentinel that Dad bought Mom in 1958. It needs a companion.😉
I have owned a bird's-head single-action (different make) for many years, but I never came across a double-action. Sure would like to be able to acquire one, especially if it was more than six rounds. It would also be nice if you could get one in other calibers.
I have been hoping to find one of these in my price range, but now I have a sudden surge of competition beating me to the good deals...

Yeah, Mike is causing shortages and inflation in the obsolete used gun market, lol.
I've got a Belgian made one, probably from the 70's too
Thanks for sharing Mike. 😁 I do have a question for you to pontificate on... Any experience with the Pedersoli Remington New Model Army? Honestly looking for a backup to my rifle in a hunting application that 8 dont have to sink a ton of work into just to get it to run right. I know Pietta and Uberti are building to meet a price point, and are sub-par as a result. One thing you and I have in common, we have several of various models, but id like to find one that works proper out of the box for a friend so he doesn't soured on c&b revolvers right off. I know several people who are already. Some of whom, ive finished their guns, but they wont buy anymore due to the work involved.
The Germans made something similar in the 50's and 60's called the Cheyenne. Found one in .38 just wish it had a birds head grip or at least a way to put one on
If they'd make an actual full size copy in something like 38 special I'd buy one

I wonder if you could also shape the original plastic grips into that shape? Unless tthe standard grip is hollow in that area. Ill have to take a look at mine.
“Ach du Lieber, BIG MIKE”! Happy NEW YEAR to ya, you ol’ “prehensiled platywampus” you! Enjoyed your fine video as ALWAYS! Yes, you were shootin’ the KING OF ALL CARTRIDGES, the .22lr !!! Yup,children and shooting sports are a great combination.I submit necessary even... SHOOTING=MODERN MEDITATION
If Ruger made a double 9 version of the Wrangler they would have a gold mine.
REQUEST... I want to put a Birdshead Grip on an 1862 Police and am toying with couple options to match up the back strap. How does the Uberti Lightning/Stallion Frame size compare to the 1862 please? Since of course the normal Uberti Birdshead grip options are slightly too large for the smaller 1862 frame. I am thinking about making an adapter piece to go inbetween or modifying the top of the backstrap. Sure would be nice if the smaller Stallion frame and grips even got me closer. ThankYou!
hi, Mike !!! i think that hr revolver is a clone far far in its shape than lightining revolver ... so long badass
Personally I'd like to see a replica made of the prototype Winchester single action revolver. Probably never will.
Hey Mike your a big kidd . you have to get old put know one says you have to grow up . Keep up the great work .
Hi Mike. I've watched many of your videos in the past but I never realized you were right down the road. One of my subscribers pointed that out to me on one of my recent videos. I am also a fan of birds head revolvers and I recently picked up the new Wrangler birds head. I did a video on it that generated a great deal of traffic on my channel! I wonder if Diamondback would consider doing what Heritage did making back strap parts available to do conversions ourselves? Great shooting Sir!
