Look What I Found In Armenia! 🇦🇲

🇦🇲 It's Soviet adventurising time again and we are in a new republic for this episode: the ancient mountainous land of Armenia where I heard some stories from the past and up in the mountains discovered the holy grail for Soviet explorers...Join me on the journey.

This is totally random, but my partner and I were in Armenia last year and we ALSO had Baghrat as our taxi driver!! We lost our minds when we saw him in your video. We hired him for a few days out of Dilijan on the other side of the country which is insane! You should have taken him up on his offer for vodka with his family, as we did. We ended up in tiny village east of Sevan drinking vodka and eating cheese and bread with him, and his mother and brother in law!!

Brits have this unusual relationship to history and the passage of time. Shall I tell you a personal anectode about that (?) In 1999 I visited Castle Howard in Yorkshire. I wandered around the outdoors by myself and along one path . . . I found a marker for a time capsule that had recently been buried. It was to be opened in the future. How far in the future would you guess (?) Maybe 100 years (?) No . . . they made it ONE THOUSAND years in the future. Think about the mentality of that . . .

Had an awesome day in an incredibly beautiful small city, saw the Magna Carta in the little no photography private booth (literally had no idea it was here! Just stumbled upon it) and saw so much beauty and history that formed the Western World 800 years ago. EVERYBODY reading this. I strongly advise you to just get up and catch a train somewhere. There is a place in Yerevan near river Hrazdan built during the soviet era that you must visit. It has a soviet amusement park, small soviet railway and a cold water stream known as "Bidzu Gyol", where old men have shower every day.

A shame so many entitled Millennials don't know it! Happy to tear down British history that enabled them to live so well, yet are ignorant of institutional roots that enabled their lives. Maybe they should be sent to live in so much of the rest of the world for a year.

It's the place where you post letters and parcels. In the pre-internet days, central post offices were important for travellers. If you wanted to receive letters and parcels during your travels, the sender would send it to a city's central post office using poste restante. Obviously, the sender would have to know your itinerary. The format would be something like this: _Given name, middle name_ (if any), _surname_ (this would have to match your passport) _Poste Restante_ _C/O POSTMASTER_ _Central Post Office_ (CPO) or _General Post Office_ (GPO) _City name_ _State or province name_ _Country name_ You would visit the post office, tell the clerk you wanted to pick up your poste restante mail, present your ID, and s/he'd go look for it.

I got to visit Gyumri this summer! It’s such a lovely place. It was nice to go to in the summer because it was breezier than Yerevan (which was over 100 degrees in June). I really loved visiting Armenia. Also, loved that I heard “chorniye glaza” (I don’t have a Cyrillic keyboard, sorry!) playing when you were in the taxi!
