The Road To Karabakh 🇦🇲

🇦🇲 The Nagorno-Karabakh region which had been quiet for the last decade recently boiled over again when Azerbaijan mounted an attack which led to it conquering much of the territory it had lost in the previous war. I flew into a bitterly cold Yerevan in early January with the intention of heading down to the capital Stepanakert to see what was happening there since the war. Would I make it or not?

It also reminds me of one time when I drove to Serbia. I was with my cousin. It was just after the war ended. He had a serbian girlfriend, now his wife. We had to wait 2 hours at the border. So far so good... except we are Dutch.. So I was a little nervous. But then my cousin starts freaking out. I smoked weed at the time and he suddenly got the idea that I might have some (forgotten) weed in the car.... he starts searching the car frantically. I assured him there was nothing in the car and I didn't take anything with me. But wasn't quite able to convince him.Luckily I WAS able to convince him to sit back in his chair and stfu! It was a good thing I was driving because if they asked him ANYTHING we would have been fucked! (it would at least have added 1 hour of travel time) And then I drove to Austria another time.. This time I had 10 grams of weed on me and got pulled over at the border. They took my passport inside and told me to park in front of a reflective window. I sat there, opened the window a bit to smoke a cigarette, wink wink notch notch notch and smelled some fresh mountain air.. and had enough time to think about what I was doing. I promised myself there and then to NEVER DO ANYTHING STUPID LIKE THAT ever again. And I didn't. They let me go without a search.

Most content creators get lazy over time and simply produce content for the sake of content. Mr Bald is a different class of creator. Every video gets us to the real people on the ground and their unedited perspectives on the immediate environment around them. When I was a child, discovery channel actually taught us things and I remember being hooked on the Globe Trekker series. Bald on his own has outdone all of the multimillion dollar stations that have flushed their principles down the toilet. He gets us where we want to be, to learn and be informed about history and current events. The videos get better every time and we have been introduced to a range of characters that would be otherwise unknown to us. I am half-way through his book and would recommend everyone who watches these videos to take time to buy and read it. Who is up for a road trip to Ratus?

I was born in Sevan the year the Soviet Union crashed. We call them the "starving years." I wish you spent a little more time there exploring because there was an abandoned amusement park behind our building with a ferris wheel and rollercoaster. There's also this beautiful ancient church overlooking the lake on a hill where my parents got married. I hope to return there one day.

"i'm not a spy, i'm just an ex-intelligence officer with an infatuation for post soviet bus stops" would've been much more of a defusing answer. Also i have to say, the sheer quality of the content you put out is astounding, it's raw yet warm, personable, informative and unbiased wherever you go, better than any documentary or piece of journalism i've ever seen. I believe it's the human factor that makes it so incredibly sharp.

That shot displayed the tragedy of the situation in such a perfect way it could have been straight from a movie. The (to my ears) sad music, the falling apart Lada with it's number plate stuck behind the front mirror... Just three human souls stuck in a war they wish had never started. Hope they are doing well.
