'Many many other'...these r the likes of Crystal Caves, Secret Agent, Doom, Wolf 3D, Word Rescue, Jill of the Jungle, Duke Nukem, Cosmo, I imagine?

the extreme amount of that same brown minimally textured in the graphics here helps me better appreciate all the visually distinct zones in Secret of the Oracle. Although I like Keen's pink slippers and intense crouching pose. An impressive variety of animated monsters for a 320kb disk game also. Interesting that Jason Blochowiak's sound effects got replaced for the next Keen game where he was still involved but then something nearly identical to that item pickup noise got into wolfenstein 3d after he was out.

This game creeped me out after playing Keen 4, 5 and 6. Somehow turning enemies into plants against their will was terrifying to me :D

This is pretty much the blacksheep of the franchise as though its OUR Super Mario Bros 2 that we got here in North America (a reskinned Doki Doki Panic), but hey this one does hav its Softdisk charm like Dangerous Dave's Haunted House trilogy or so.

I like that this one had a boss battle at the end. However, the first time I played as a kid early 90's, didn't realize the bombs were essential at the end. Played through the whole game just to not have bombs and had to restart game at the beginning.

3rd generation of people are playing this game; our parents were playing it in the 90s, we were playing it in our childhood and our sons and daughters are playing it

Why did I never realize that this game lacks music? I've played and watched it before, and I didn't think about it until just now...

Same. 30 years ago I had a primitive PC that lacked speakers, so I thought it was just mine XD

That Attacking Asparagus Spear looks like a nightmare fuel! And the Screaming Grapes sound like nightmare fuel.@_@

The parsnips scared me the most with their projectiles. Parsnip isn't really popular where I live, so I thought they were carrots!

This game just released on Nintendo Switch out of nowhere!!!

So it wasn't just me that the music didn't work. I remember I tried everything to turn it on. Nothing worked.

Music never got implemented in the game. The engine never supported it, but I agree with you that it would have been nice if they would have removed the option, saving us some time tinkering on something that would never work. Have to admit back in the day I messed around with it to get it to work too. If you think about some audiotracks from Keen 4 (Like "You've got to eat your vegetables") you can tell that it originally was composed for Keen Dreams. The modding community eventually did get the music to work and have used it for some Keen Dreams Mods. If you're into Keen Dreams mods then I bet you'd like this Christmas version (does not contain music afaik): kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3aej7F7YrXOe8o.html

I had this trick. I always played the mine last. If I had enough bombs I just grabbed the key and finished the level the easy way. You kept the key and the castle was much easier. Only needed 1/2 keys to get through the 2 doors. Side note. First time I played through took me soo long. But I didn't know you needed the bombs. I was so confused until I realized the castle has 2 levels. If you don't collect 12 bombs you're stuck.

It's currently now available on Switch with music and new digitized sounds with the original adlib still supported. It's pretty expensive for what you get, especially since this game was originally freeware. Still, I'd love to see more reworked DOS games come to the platform. Would be nice if we had the other Keen games as well!

I think this is the very first part of Commander Keen since he does not have the stun laser and the pogo stick techniques seeds and that is it but instead of putting Commander Keen 0 they decided to put it as dreams so it will not confuse us PC players and fans of Commander Keen

No, this was developed between Keen 3 and Keen 4. If you look at Keen 1-3, it looks/feels like quite a different game. Now, look at Keen 4. Notice that this game looks a lot more like Keen 4, but some of the features hadn't been developed yet (like the pogo and the ledge grabbing). It was developed because the team that made the Commander Keen games left Softdisk after the success of their first three games, but they agreed to make more Keen games for Softdisk as part of an agreement to not be sued for the fact that they had secretly used Softdisk's computers to make the first three Keen games. "Keen Dreams" was both a transitional game to the new engine and also part of the fulfillment of that legal agreement - Softdisk got to distribute the game.

@@leomdk939 That's not what Carlos meant. He knows that this is 3.5, but he meant story-wise, this might be the first Keen. Because Billy doesn't have his pogo stick in Keen Dreams, even though he got it in Marooned on Mars.

It's told in the story that Keen indeed has the Vorticon Hyperpistol, but it ran out of juice.

Wonderful game, BTW in 31:24, really you are able to pick up the two Keen lives, just use the "I" of "ID" how a tube, from there you can jump to both sides. If my memory does not fail me, you can fall yourself to the left of the castle again. Best Regards!

Do you know that you can go through semi solid platforms by ducking and pressing the jump button? This mechanic is included since keen 4 (I'm currently not sure about 1-3). Apart from that nice to see the old games again. When I played Keen Dreams back then I remember dying at least hundred times to one of those banana guys (they are bananas, arent they? Not sure anymore actually ^^)

I know, I've been upping my Keen skills quite some bit lately. Though at the moment of recording this playthrough I knew darn well, though I mostly forgot about it.

I had this game as a kid and *hated* it - temporary stunning sucked so much. I don't think even my dad was able to finish it, though I know he did make it to the final level. I wish Keen 6 was available on Steam - they have a 1-5 bundle because apparently Keen 6 was done by a different publisher? I only had the shareware demo as a kid.

1:53 Crouch and jump to fall through.

I noticed there were some fruits interspersed with the anthropomorphic vegetables.

I love me some Commander Keen, but I sure hated Keen Dreams as a kid.

This game use to give me epileptic sezures

The eshop wants $9.99. NINE NINETY NINE. I respect the classics, but Jesus Christ on toast! This is not worth that price.

i'd pay $9.99 for 1-2-3 and $9.99 for dreams+4-5-6. the implication that getting dreams + 4-5-6 could set you back $40 is utterly bizarre. ::EDIT:: seems keen dreams and the other keen games have their rights owned by different people atm, so keen dreams on switch is likely a stand alone occurrence.
