Long Lasting squeaky door hinge fix

Lithium grease is great for this→ amzn.to/2woykJs
WD-40 or oil is not the best way to get rid of a squeak because they dry out too fast and drip. If you don't want to do this project over and over again, use grease.

I use WD-40 on the hinge and it's not squeaking again after one year. If it start squeaking then a little spray will do the trick again. No tools needed, just spray and some tissues to prevent leaking.

Grease and or vaseline jelly attract dust and dirt and you may get a dark spot on the door. I use blaster garage door lubricant (approx. $6 at home depot). I don't even have to pull the pin just squirt into crevices (it is so thin it gets into even tight hinges). Blaster GDL has minimal odor that dissipates quickly and doesn't smell that bad to begin with.

  • @SNLGUY

@Greek God My bathroom door is going on 5 months not a sound out of the hinges. I should say that the hinges are new so if yours are not I suggest you clean them real good then use Blaster GDL. I soak greasy dirty hinges over night in vinegar but new hinges are not that expensive. My cellar door is making a faint squeak after 5 mos (those are also new). I give them a shot on each crease and I'm done in less than one minute. I put a rag down since it is thin some will run down. No dirt buildup or greasy darkening to worry about.

Someone else's video suggested using furniture polish. Can be sprayed on without removing hinge, and it won't damage the door or nearby paint. I don't know how long it lasts though.

Good short and to-the-point video. The only thing is that even the mention of WD-40 as the alternative perpetuates the myth that it is good for this type of thing. WD-40 has almost no lubricating qualities. It's fine to free up rusted on bolts but it's not a good lubricant, even though a lot of people think it is for some reason. 3-in-1 oil would work fine if that's what you have on hand, or white lithium grease in a spray can, or a lot of other things. Even Vaseline I suppose. I keep a tube of SuperLube in the drawer which is a synthetic lubricant that works great for all kind of different things. Just not WD-40. It will actually dissolve and strip out whatever lubricant is already in there.

Wrong thing to do! When a door creaks it shows it’s age and personality. There is even a video where a squeaking door sounds like a high pitched Miles Davis saxophone play. Some people find it therapeutic when they slowly open and close squeaking doors. Just joking but what I wrote is still kind of true depending on the personality of the petiole who have to hear the door.
