How to Quiet a Squeaky Door | Ask This Old House

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains different methods for silencing a squeaky door

Time: 1-2 hours
Cost: $5-10
Skill Level: Beginner
Tools List for Quieting a Squeaky Door:
Hammer [amzn.to/2r3mnMl]
Shopping List:
Multi-purpose oil [amzn.to/33X1IrG]
Powdered graphite [amzn.to/2KxuqI8]
Nail [amzn.to/2Xxu1L6]
Steps:
1. Start by identifying the hinge(s) that are squeaking. Use a hammer and a nail to remove each hinge pin one at a time, and continue to open and close the door. When the door opens and closes silently, the pin(s) that are removed are the ones that are squeaking.
2. Apply some lubricating oil to the squeaky hinge pins and put them back into place.
3. If that doesn’t work, try blowing some graphite onto the hinge pin.
4. If that doesn’t work, or the squeak keeps returning after a period of time, it’s possible the hinge is out of alignment. Try carefully knocking the hinge back into alignment using the hammer and nail. Be cautious of deforming or damaging the hinge in the process.
5. Return the hinge pin to the hinge and see if the squeak has stopped. It may require more fine tune adjustments to get it perfectly back into place.
Resources:
Tom used a couple methods to try and quiet the door. In this case, the hinges were out of alignment, and needed to be carefully bent back into position using a hammer.
In most other cases, some type of lubricant will usually work to quiet a door. Tom started with a 3-IN-ONE multi-purpose oil lubricant [amzn.to/2NW80SW] (www.3inone.com/). Since that didn’t work for the homeowner, he also suggested trying 3G Powdered Graphite Lubricant [amzn.to/37jh8Zy], which is manufactured by Hillman (www.hillmangro... ). If that doesn’t work, it’s worth considering the alignment issues that Tom addressed.

Another good method for misaligned hinges is to take the top two (or bottom two) hinge pins out, then shim on the striker side of the door to get a uniform gap. Then use an adjustable wrench to bend the hinge barrels into alignment with eachother. Doors close perfect and no squeak.

A door squeak can also come from the door shearing against the door jamb molding. Be sure to check the outside edges of the door for contact with the door jamb or weather stripping. Latex paint or even varnishes can cause squeak when they contact the jamb. Look for paint wear and sand down to resolve the squeak.

I had a CREAK, not a squeak in a 10-year-old door. Oil didn't help. Turns out when I framed the door I didn't include a screw toward the bottom . A 2 1/2 inch screw cinched it tight. No more creak.

Sometimes the hinge is installed slightly rotated in the jamb mortise. I see this a lot with inexpensive (high production) prehung doors. Also, a warped door slab can cause a hinge to squeak.

This is quite common where I work. Patients room doors (grab tops of doors to do pullups) and just high traffic areas. You can also "carefully' put your fingers on the hinge and pull it closed. The binding/squeaky hinge will vibrate. Realign by grabbing with v-jaw pliers. Great videos T.O.H.!👍👍

What I was gonna say. Bad alignment caused the door to swing shut, or open on its own...and someone hammered the hinge to make it tighter. Normally you would hammer the pin, not the hinge. (Actually Tommy taught that trick in another episode).

Tommy solved the mystery squeak. I wouldn't have considered misaligned hinges--I would have "jumped to the conclusion" of a dry hinge that needed lubricant.

I've just fitted first ever door and stopped some annoying squeaking straight away. It isn't too hard to work out what it is causing it if you listen and watch closely when moving the door. The hinges aren't aligned with each other usually. It was the case with mine, door frame isn't straight so that didnt help, so one hinge had to be brought out a bit with wood filler. This Causes resistance on the hinges which causes the creaking. The rubbings of the metal parts vibrate through the door, giving it the wooden creaking sound. Moving metal parts alone dont do a creak sound like a creaking door, it's much more of a squeak, so that's the wood giving it that creaky noise.

No, WD40 will only attract dirt. I just replaced all the hinges in my house (color change). Before I installed I took them apart and lubed them with Permatex Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant for car brakes as I’m a side mechanic. You can get it or a like brand at any auto parts store. That stuff works like nobody’s business and will last forever and it good for 3,000 degrees F. Haha 😂

Had a ghost door. Bathroom door, 100 year old home. Open the door to leave the room, the weight of the door would swing it six inches. The squeak was the least of the problem. I shimmed the plate on the top door hinge. Cut out the right size from empty 1 lb butter box…coated, stiff, easy to cut with scissors. Used next size up length brass screws to replace. It worked for a time. Ghosts need the restroom. Problem swing came back. Everybody and his brother looked at this. Then…..he said, buy a screen door spring. Can I use one from the junk drawer to save three dollars? Sure. Cup hooks? Yes Been up for 8 years now. It takes the stress off the door which stays open. No squeak which is stress. Oh…use chapstick for the hinge pins. Good idea to remove to clean, but then use bottom of a used candle or chapstick before you put it back..

Dry graphite? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't do it. It tried that and now I have black graphite on the door jams, kick boards, etc. In the past I've asked handymen, painters, etc. about how to get the graphite off and they all said they didn't know. It wasn't until today when I did a search on removing graphite and found a suggestion by Vicki Jaeger to use Krud Kutter and it works!!! I wish I'd found her suggestion YEARS AGO! Thanks Vicki
