Lone Star Mockingbird vs Frio - Disc Throwdown!

Спорт

Welcome to my latest Disc Throwdown! In this video I compare 2 popular fairway drivers from Lone Star Disc - the Frio and the Mockingbird. I play a best throw round of disc golf with them at Cypresswood, in Spring, Texas.
Here are the fairway drivers I compare and contrast:
175g Frio Alpha (7 5 -1 1)
172g Mockingbird Alpha (7 5 -2 1)
I also throw the following midrange:
178g Harpoon V2 (4 3 0 2)
And I putt and approach with this putter:
172g Jack Rabbit V2 (3 3 0 3)

My Frio is pretty beefy too but with crazy glide I would put it at a 6 and I love it. Fits a really nice spot in between my Mockingbird and Brazos. Great video!!

Thank you! My Frio is a bit stable but likely will beat into a nice straight disc after some time. Feels great in the hand.

love my Mockingbirds I have 3 I bag. I might try the Frio for the inevitable High head winds we will be getting later this year. I play Zube park and can't believe its been calm in the mornings.

Yeah the Frio is definitely a full notch more stable than the Mockingbird. Down the line I hope to try out a less stable version to see how it flies. I was so surprised at how stable this one was. I noticed it has a "halo" type effect with the 2 colors, so this may be more stable due to that mix.

I have Mockingbird in glow plastic. I love throwing and it is a good disc for my slower arm speed. I just recently bought a Frio in alpha. Have only thrown it once, but seemed to throw it well. It is definitely OS in my hands, but not terribly so. Have you tried a Copperhead? It is a good approach disc and putter for me. Try a Harrier also. I’ve gotten some of my longer throws off the tee with a Harrier.

I'll be trying out more Lone Star Discs over time. I don't always have access to them, and I only have a few that I own, so it's a slow march for now. But you'll see more thorough reviews of them and other discs from other companies in the future from me. 🙂

Nick, you and I are of similar age and power, but your skill is a bit better. You make these videos very realistic for me to envision. Great comparison. The Frio is rated only one notch more on stability than the Mockingbird, but the Frio definitely threw more stable. Do you suppose the Glow is kore stable than the Alpha. When you threw that driver under a bush on a really hot day, and my having spent the first 40 years of my life in Texas, my first though was, watch out for a snake.

My understanding is the Glow plastic is essentially Bravo plastic, so is about as stable as that. Sometimes that's more stable than Alpha plastic, but I think it really comes down to each disc, as some runs may just be more or less stable than others. This Frio flies similar to how a Halo Star TeeBird might fly, and that might be intentional with how this plastic was molded and then cooled.

@@NickCarroll Thanks Nick -- interesting. I kind of have a natural affection for the Frio, as I played in that river many times as a child while camping.

@@alanlundberg4534 The Frio is a great disc. For me it fits perfectly into a TeeBird slot, and the Mockingbird is significantly different. Not sure if I need a disc in between those 2 stabilities.

You mentioned the Leopard and the IT during your video. Although the Mockingbird is closer to the Leopard3 than the Leopard in flight numbers, I would be interested in knowing which of the three wpuld you prefer and trust more?

  • @NickCarroll

I prefer and trust the Leopard the most, but because I've used it more. I think I can get a little more distance with the IT And Mockingbird. I think the Mockingbird can go a tiny bit farther than the IT, because the nose is a bit more aerodynamic. If you look at them side by side, the Mockingbird is built to be a little bit more stable and a little bit faster than the IT.

@@NickCarroll Good info. I get great distance out of my Leopard as well, but it is light. My IT is about 173g, and I assumed that the higher speed and the higher dome would naturally carry it farther. It will go farther, but seems to be a bit more finicky about how it is thrown. Sounds like the Mockingbird might be better in the long run.
