Today our guest coach IM Asaf Givon will explain to you the typical ideas for both White and Black in this opening. He will give an overview about the different variations and commonly arriving middlegame positions.

    Really helpful lesson for those of us who want to use The London at all costs. There are several counter openings Black uses to trip up a Londoner, and this was the first video that showed some subtle but powerful moves to both avoid and smash those traps. This video is 5 years old and not the guy that now does these videos

    Asaf, you need to revise this video. The recommended second move for white in the London System is Bf4 and not Nf3. Sometimes the move Nf3 is delayed so that the white Queen has access to the d1 - h5 diagonal. Also, Nf3 is not as flexible a move as Bf4.

    Why do people make double pawns seem like the worst thing? They say double pawns are weak because they can't protect each other. but what about the base pawn of a pawn chain? It cannot be protected by a pawn. And alot of times, a pawn doesn't have to be isolated, doubled or backward to be a doomed pawn.

  • @simonhakansson9300

    @simonhakansson9300

    Double pawn´s also have the weakness with the frontal pawn not beign easily defended by the rook. They are of course not the worst thing (it depends on the position) but on really high level play, subtle weaknesses in the enemy position might become quite big quite fast.

  • @dmaster20ify

    @dmaster20ify

    It doesn't matter what level. If the double pawns are not weak in that position, nobody can make them weak. Furthermore, double pawns actually become a strength in certain positions because they control crucial squares and offer dynamic play.

  • @thedrakensangtank

    doubled pawns are way less mobile than single pawns, which means they are a real disadvantage in the endgame

  • @dmaster20ify

    All I can say, you can't be so dogmatic. Double pawns can actually be the factor that pushes your advantage in an endgame. I can't give any special circumstances. I was running through my games to find an example but I couldn't bother.

  • @thesuttenburger

    It's a general rule. More times than not doubled pawns are significantly worse for you. Not always, but usually.

    14:30 What is the best response for white if black plays kC3, attacking the queen? If white captures with the knight, black can capture with the queen (giving ckeck) and then easily escape.

    I usually accept the pawn and continue developing, also sometimes play c3 if I want keep my pawn chain but I like the flexibility of the c pawn. there are very few moves that can disrupt the move order when using the London or Manson attack and usually If I deviate, it's to grab blunders. Not that the pawn is one though. You can almost ignore your opponents moves completely and still get a solid even middlegame. Almost doesn't matter what black plays you should (again almost always)be fine. Im no master but this is my general findings and I've been playing this opening for a long time.

    in 14:50 can't the Queen simply go to B4 and simply win the bishop on the next move? I really can't see how is this position advantageous to white. Also the Chess.com analyzing tool calls a 6 points advantage for black... Am I missing something?

    e5 is possible in some positons (the one where white placed the bishop on d3) but in general, it´s quite difficult since white has 3 pieces controlling that square (the bishop on f4 makes it more difficult for black to play e5).

    That position at 15:07 is not doing any good. Cuz after bishop takes knight on d5, queen takes our knight on b5. That is just giving away a valuable knight there and black's queen is out of that shitty trap.

It is played by some of the strongest players in the world and offers serious attacking chances. GM Gata Kamsky has made it his specialty.
