AlphaZero London System pawn sacrifice novelty. AlphaZero Opening Novelties #4

GM Matthew Sadler and WIM Natasha Regan explain how AlphaZero - DeepMind's general purpose artificial intelligence algorithm - thinks, trains and plays chess.
In this video, we examine an AlphaZero London system in which get to see an AlphaZero opening novelty: a sharp new idea 10.e4 followed by 11.e5 against Stockfish. Interestingly, Leela Zero Chess also chose the same plan in a fantastic game against Andsacs (deeply annotated on the Kingscrusher channel: • Leela Chess uses Londo... )
Matthew and Natasha's new book "Game Changer" came out on 20th January 2019 and won the prestigious ECF Book of the Year and the FIDE Book of the Year prizes for 2019! The Game Changer chess book is available in print and digital versions from these links:

    Thanks very much! Really glad you like these extra videos! We noticed with our last book that it's impossible to fit in everything into a single book, so we came up with the idea of putting stuff into extra videos. With the quality of these games, we've got a pretty inexhaustible supply of material so I hope we'll keep on going for quite a while! Hope you enjoy the book! Best Wishes, Matthew

    The London, just like the exchange Slav, gets a bad reputation not because it is itself a dull opening, but because of the philosophy of the players who play it! In fact, this "zero risk" philosophy comes to fruition in the London more often than the King's Gambit, but that doesn't mean that the London is a dull opening! Indeed, the strongest attacker in the world proves otherwise :). Kudos to Stockfish for defending! Edit: Quite nice of you to give a shoutout to KC!

    Yes Stockfish's phenomenal defence is what makes the match (and the recent TCEC matchup between Lc0 and SF10) so much fun. It's a wonderful clash of styles!

    Since Leela defeated SF 10 in the TCEC SuFi 15 by 53.5-46.5 I bet Leela vs Alphazero would be the greatest match of all time.

    Hi Matthew and Natasha, I got the book two days ago and I totally love it! And that game where was forced to Stockfish play 1. c4!? I'm also very curious about your games against AlphaZero, will you share them?

    Hi! Glad you're enjoying the book and glad you like the 1.c4 game! One of the things that amazed me about the AlphaZero-Stockfish match at the time - and you're seeing something similar in the Leela Zero-Stockfish TCEC match at the moment - is that you get great games whatever the opening. The 2 engines are so different, the clash of styles leads to lots of exciting fights! I'll have to see whether I have the whole of our games recorded: I noted the openings but now you mention it, I'm not sure I ever wrote down the complete games... (the result was what you'd expect ;-)) If I have them, then it might be worth a video some time! Best Wishes, Matthew

    What would AlphaZero play against the King's Indian Defense?? Are those lines of AlphaZero Known?

  • @GameChangerChess

    @GameChangerChess

    5 жыл бұрын

    There are no games published in which Stockfish decided by itself to play the King's Indian Defence. There are a few TCEC games from King's Indian positions and AlphaZero seemed to handle Samisch structures very well indeed (with both colours!) See the chapter on the King's Indian in our book Game Changer for lots more details!

    @@GameChangerChess I ordered it at a Dutch site XD. But it won't take much longer. But what I'm interested at is what AlphaZero would do against all kinds of openings without the book. For instance, I know that it uses the King's Indian Defense against 1. d4, or the Ragozin Defense when it played the Queen's gambit declined. I am excited about the book and thanks for responding!

  • @GameChangerChess

    Thanks for your comment! I'm not sure about that really: 17...Qb4 is quite risky! The queen is exposed on b4 to discovered attacks from the knight on b3, and also to distracting attacks from a2-a3 and c2-c3. The one advantage to the move is that Black can meet 18.Qg4 with 18...f5 but after 19.Qg3 followed by h4-h5, White's initiative goes on. I think it's more a different method of defence to 17...Qc7 than a better one. 17...Qc7 keeps things tight at the back and doesn't give White any more targets to gain time. Best Wishes, Matthew
