London Routemaster Bus Action (Part 1)
The AEC Routemaster is a type of a London double-decker bus that was built by Associated Equipment Company (AEC) in 1954 (in production from 1958) and produced until 1968. Primarily front-engined, rear open-platform buses, a small number of variants were produced with doors and/or front entrances. Introduced by London Transport in 1956, the Routemaster saw continuous service in London until 2005, and currently remains on two heritage routes in central London.
Two heritage routes, running just 10 buses 5 on routes 15 and 9 each. London Transport recognises the nostalgia for the type among ordinary Londoners and their appeal to tourists.
Although these buses are operated under contract to TfL and accept standard Travelcards, Oystercards or cash fares, they only operate for a limited time during the day duplicating short sections of two regular London bus routes.
Heritage route 9: Olympia-Warwick Gardens - High Street Kensington - Royal Albert Hall - Hyde Park Corner - Piccadilly Circus - Trafalgar Square - Strand - Aldwych.
Heritage route 15: Trafalgar Square - Strand - Aldwych - Fleet Street - Cannon Street - Monument - Tower Hill.
The buses used were specially restored from remaining examples for this service and have clean environmental engines, modern electrics and sealed windows.

They ought to bring these buses back.
I used to drive these on one of the busiest routes in London, the 207s. Loved driving them as the brakes were fantastic, the modern ones can't compare. Don't know why they got rid of them, an icon of London.

apart from modern buses are better in every aspect lol, the only good thing about RMs are that they are comfortable and enjoyable to drive

great history
I lived in London many many years ago, anad there were still a few routes with RT equipment, and I noticed a few visual differences between these refurbished RMs and the ones I knew; the single fog light in front is gone, and the turn signals are different, as are the rear lights and the interior lights; the biggest shocks was probably the floor, looks like linoleum instead of the old wood flooring. Still, it's good to see that some of them are still there...
That music is first class. Love it.

I've had the privilege of driving one of these of buses, Surprisingly easy, Very ahead of there time.. I have driven other older types of buses to and quite hard to control really have to concentrate, The steering have a lot of play and brakes are very 60 and 70's tech and no enforcement brake fitted like modern buses, While the route master is nothing like that, Gives you confidence while driving it and a top speed of 45mph and that's not even limited! ...
the old routmasters still seem more suited to maneuvering and negotiating the awkward roads of london due to their skinny and nimble appearance compared to the bulky, wide modern buses.

Imagine with this overtake, if a Routemaster would go into Motorsport for double decker buses only? It would win
I also have double decker model but it's RT type and it's yellow in colour.
The design of the Routemaster was excellent for ease of maintenance, but became less so once the specially equpped depot for the purpose was closed.

Strange. Interesting to see that the RM heritage is kept alive. However, it should be borne in mind that, just perhaps, there is little or anything about these examples that is truly original. In fact, RMs even in the early 1990s were re - engined, had new running units put in, re - seated and modified considerably. The moquette in these is very non - standard and the presence of DiPTaC hand - rails and poles also belies the vast amount of alteration that has been undertaken in order to keep these vehicles on the go. Most of these likely have Cummins diesel lumps in them and certainly not the original 9.6 litre AEC units coupled to modern transmission systems. Preservationists would be aghast!

My Mum was a clippie, Fulwell Garage, 267 Route and the 281 late 50s through 1969-ish :) I used to go to work with her sometimes. But whatever the tune is behind this video is bloody horrible !
