London Fire Brigade 1980s-Soho Fire Engines with Dennis, Dodge & Shelvoke Appliances

It's the late 1980s and we see operations at Soho Fire Station in Shaftesbury Avenue, in the West End of London. Both Dennis Pump's and Dodge & Shelvoke Simon Snorkel High Platform's both are seen going out on a shout, with horns and sirens blaring! Proper sounding fire engines ! The siren really wasn’t taken as seriously then as the two tone horns (blues & twos) whereas nowadays you just don’t hear two tone horns except on the railways, it’s all sirens, albeit, they have gotten much better. Also back when this was filmed, we still made purpose built fire engines in Britian, not like today where they are mostly based on an existing truck chassis.

Yeah this is between 1990/1. Callsigns on the appliance sides and fire gear are a giveaway. Great footage.

I loved being in the job when we were running these Perkins Dennis’s. (Dyfed). Looked, drove, sounded, and smelt like a real pump.

My Grandad used to be a firefighter and drove those fire trucks around London. Before he switched his job to work on a building construction site in and around London.

LFB currently has 15 aerial appliances which includes 4 reserve vehicles . Asset Co (who run LFB) refused to pay for the two 64 metre turntable ladders so the London freemasons raised the 2 million pounds from their members. They also bought a number of staff cars as well. Back in the seventies I believe LFB had 40+ aerials.

For many years during the ‘80s and ‘90s Soho was the busiest fire station in the world. Not so sure now. Granted most of their call-outs were AFAs and lift rescues, but a shout’s a shout. Caveat: I’m talking about fire calls only, and not medical calls like many firefighters deal with around the globe.

That was just like the old fire station in the middle of chester. That was very bad. When I drove a pump. In 67 I was hit comeing out by a car side on. We was on a person's reported. Still got there in 5 minutes. My boys got 2 people out in the end chester council had to put lights up to stop the traffic. So we had a free way out .I got points and a paid £ 40 .I still say it wasn't my fault.
