    Kirstie: No need to feel bad about not being able to help more. This couple has visited 100 houses without finding anything to their liking. 103 houses after this episode. I suspect there isn't a house on this planet likely to please them, and this will become truer and truer as their money buys them less and less.

    I am SO HAPPY that Ellen didn't buy that strangely shaped house! It felt disconnected from itself; strangely shaped rooms stacked upon one another without proper flow and smallish windows (not enough light!) The 'courtyard garden' (what we could see of it) looked like a PASSAGEWAY! not a proper outside space. It FELT like depression to me. But the one bedroom flat in Margate FELT wonderful! It was amazing. I am SO HAPPY for her that she got that one. And, it seems everyone else here is too! (We just ALL knew? Wow!).

    Matt frankly does not want to buy a house because that would mean he would be making a "long term commitment" which from the squit squat opening where he insisted on ignoring his partners hints about engagement. Frankly Sophie dump his ass fast!

    Phil and Ellen -- what beautiful synergy! I wonder if there really are estate agents out there with big hearts like his. As for that Matt guy: Hmmmm -- let's have a baby (but no ring); let's buy a house (but no ring); hmmmm maybe let's not buy a house (still no ring).....

    Wait a minute! This couple said they'd be comfortable paying £450,000 for a house but would stretch to £600,000. That extra 33% expense is a recipe for financial disaster. Financial maturity is buying what you can easily afford, not what you want. Life can throw you surprises, like a job loss or illness. The money you have today may not be there tomorrow.

  • @dealbreakerc

    @dealbreakerc

    The comfortable price may just have been a price they would have liked so they could have extra for fun expenses and/or investment. It may be the case that 600k was actually reflective of the upper end of a reasonably responsible budget. Some people do not want to spend as much as they necessarily can on a home. For example, a couple of my friends (in Canada) had an upp end of their budget they could afford of 850k (Canadian - the pound is currently about 1.67 Canadian dollars) but were focusing on places at the 600-650k point. They ended up getting a place that was asking 675k for a little over 700k. What they have done is taken the difference in what their mortgage payment is and what it would have been had they spent 850k and put that into an investment portfolio (plus an additional 10% of each pay). So they could have afforded a more expensive place but instead found a place they lived for less and accelerated their retirement investing plan. It's a win-win to buy at a price well under your maximum that you can reasonably afford.

    Mat’s requirements seem too unrealistic for their budget. They should have bought last year when prices were cheaper. Get into a property before you are priced out of the market!

    Matt don't seem to want to comment on marriage or a home.... women give away too much of their power to men who don't put a ring on it. Anyways. The one Ellen choose was perfect for her. Moving forward I think when looking you have to go by how you really feel about the space you'll spend most of your time in. Plus, a tension rod and heavy curtain can make that living space into a cozy sleeping space.

    Ellen make the right choice. She needs to buy a place for herself not for her parents, and especially not for her mother. I think any problem she has probably goes back to that relationship. As for the couple, Matt is a cheapskate. He's going to avoid buying a home for as long as possible. It's actual equity and adult responsibility. It's above him. I fear for the relationship he has with his family because when is he going to bail on that one too? The guy will waste his money instead of investing it wisely and growing it. Kirsty should not feel bad at all. Just cut bait and let that fish go.

    Happy for Ellen, she will be happy there. Lovely area to live. Couple have valid reasoning. Busy street, not great for anyone, especially children and pets. Not to mention air pollution, privacy, sense of security and crime. Also wanting to live a beach lifestyle is a dream for many people. The problem is the lack of compromise in a tight market. TFS

He needs to wake up and realize that his options are diminishing, not increasing. He is very probably the same way about everything else in life. His wife has the patience of a saint.

    I am surprised that Ellen chose a clearly marked "noisy" flat at nighttimes despite stating that noise was an issue for her .... and that she chose a one bedroom flat when a seperate room for work was so important for her ..... I hope she didn't get the heavy surprise when living and experiencing the actual noiselevel .....

    I think it's just that he can't control himself. I studied a lot of psychology. I majored in it as an undergrad, studied it more in grad school and worked with behaviorally challenged students for two decades. tRump is first and foremost a sociopath. But he also exhibits symptoms of schizophrenia and I'm sure he's on the autism spectrum. I won't go into the details as to what behaviors are indicative of which disorders, but by my observations and from what I've read others who are or were close to him have said, I make that determination.

    Dear Friends, Thanks for your thoughts. Here are mine: As one who would have greatly benefited from “inclusion and diversity” initiatives, I rather kindly disagree, and see what is so right with this generation! Perhaps you can see it from this angle as I and my family does, and see it instead as progress. Thank you for reconsidering your reactive reactions, and reconsidering my response. May we all feel grateful for all that we have and all that is now possible for many, many others to similarly receive. Holiday Blessings

    {* @KirstieAllsop and @PhilSpencer } 2 things that have occured to me - in Florida - from watching most of these shows........ ~if I can stretch my budget in an expensinsive area that I don`t prefer, then I can stretch it in my prefered area..... ~adults don`t take their kids` personalities and dis-/likes into account when making these decisions, but only make their decisions according to their own preferences {and I can imagine some of their kids/teenagers balking about what they want / don`t have - reflecting the parents` and society`s narrowmindedness and self-focussedness, while the parents view the kids as ungrateful for all that the parents feel that they`ve provided for their offspring}
