You are my FAVORITE Québécois Franciscan friar!!! ❤️🎸🥁 Even though this was a more recent concert, Geddy sounds good. This song was always in a lower key, so he didn’t have to strain so hard. He took voice lessons to save what he had left and learn to make much the same sounds without using half the power. You can totally tell when they did their older hits. Also: the “floor” is what we call the flat portion, and I haaaaated it when people in front stood on their chairs/chair backs!

I NEVER went back on the "floor" or parterre in a rock concert! NEVER! To enjoy the show, the music and spend a whole evening being happy, I might chose a remote section. My first interest is sound and general appreciation of the stage presentation. Today, with big screens, we have everything we need to appreciate the presence of our beloved Rush. And one more thing : I never go to a rock concert with earplugs. Never! Since "Signals" with Rush at the Québec's Colisée !

"Favorite Quebecois Franciscan Friar" lol. Yes, I think I could say that, too. But I could also say that Guylain has become one of my favorite Rush reactors, especially for the second part analyses.

I think Geddy did what a lot of rock singers do, he learned how to use his voice more correctly. If he'd kept going the way he did when he was younger he would not have a voice left. I've always enjoyed Rush's lyrics. R.I.P. Neil Peart. You should hunt down some of Peart's big band jazz performances on KZread. They're really worth a listen and show another side of his playing. He produced two CD's, BURNING FOR BUDDY and BURNING FOR BUDDY 2 which were jazz albums with rock drummers playing the percussion. They are really worth a listen too. Very good quality, I have them both.

You will not be surprises that I listen to one of them a long time ago. I was a fan of Neil Peart and of Buddy Rich. So... I listened more these albums, in the '90, than Rush itself. I was into other styles of music, at the time!

I always thought the ending lines of the song were about how most of us who grew up in the suburbs, even if we felt like outsiders, end up becoming our parents, buying a house in the suburbs to raise kids. Repeating the cycle...

To my knowledge, everything you hear at a RUSH concert has been triggered by one of the 3 guys...for example, if you look at 15:17 you will see Alex hit a pedal with his foot that is programmed to output the word "Subdivisions"...so although RUSH uses technology to enhance the overall sound that they produce in a live environment, everything that you hear was triggered by one of these 3 geniuses.

  • @GuylainPrince

Well, yes, that might be it. In 2012, I am pretty sure that they use click-tracks for the light/video effects. Maybe sound balance as well. I am ready to believ you, for the triggering of the elements of the show. It would fit better their musician's culture. Good input, John!

Alex vocalized the " Subdivisions" part. Like everything of Rush the musicianship is superb, but for this songs it's the lyrics that make the point.

I would not equate Alex-on-the-video with Alex-recorded-voice. It could be a decision of the video's director. In shows, it seems that the voice is triggered by a pedal. Of all of this, I am not sure. I rely on someone else's input. See up here in the comment section.

The Dallas live version is from the last tour i've seen them live: Clockwork Angels Tour 02-06-2013 in Amsterdam. I still have the feeling that they were on top of their game that year. Geddy's voice sounded great in my memory and I doubt it was the beer playing tricks on me ;-)

I'm also guilty of not paying enough attention to the lyrics in the past. (Apart from Witch Hunt - love that song). Now I need to go back through my entire Rush collection and really dig into the words. This was the period they brought a lot of synthesiser into the songs. IMO too much; for me, Rush was always a GBD (guitar, bass, drums) trio with a bit of added keys where warranted. The amount of synth on this album took some of the shine off it - that and absolutely ruining the otherwise beautiful "Losing It" by putting a bit of self-indulgent tosh in the middle. That said, the bass line in the chorus is one of my all-time favourites from Geddy. Looking forward to the analysis.

I reacted the same way 38 years ago, and earliuer this week. My first listening of the whole album, I said : to much synths. And wo me, Rush is expert drumming, gutar and bass playing. And we don't have, in GL an expert keyboardis. To me, sometimes, it sounds like a "kid playing with grown ups", on the keyboard side. I am CERTAIN that keyboards' lover don't like Rush. As a drummer, I don't like AC/DC. At all. It is the end of the profession, and could be easily replaced by a computer... But, again, it was the sound of the '80, and this why I stayed away from it. I was more into jazz rock, fusion and hard rock, at the time. To me, that was "impersonal" music. But, this past week, I came to listen to the album with new ears, and I clearly found something new in it. Rush is still there, fully present. Still geniuses, but making their way through the '80s! They survived. So many great bands of the '70s did not! They were able to adjust, even if, for me, it was too much. But, hey! I am a drummer, and later, I played bass guitar for 8 years. We both love Nightwish; there, we find expert keyboarding! Rush with such mastery, an equivalent musician as they are on their own field, would have been phenomenal, but not a power trio... The very definition of Rush.
