An Agama Lizard Lays Eggs and a Sunbeam Snake Slithers Past

I was working in my garden in the mid North of Thailand and noticed an Oriental garden lizard - Calotes versicolor starting to dig in the soil, which could only mean thing, that she was preparing to lay eggs. This is something that I had tried to see and film for many years, so I quickly set up my camera gear behind a bamboo and filmed more or less continuously for the next 80 minutes. It took quite a while for the lizard to dig that hole, but the egg laying itself was quite quick. Then it took even longer to fill the hole in.
Astonishingly a sunbean snake - Xenopeltis unicolor past through the shot just centimetres from the lizard, and while the agama clearly saw the snake and froze, the snake appeared oblivious to the presence of the lizard.

Incredible footage, as an interesting tidbit of ethnological studies, such lizards are commonly eaten by folks in the isan region, quite a delicacy when roasted. Such exuberant coloring on the snake as well, shame that these harmless creatures are quite mistakenly killed by the ignorant

Yes, indeed. As you know well.... luck plays a part, but if you don't put in the hours in the field, you won't get that lucky break.

Yes, isn’t it incredible. She actually laid 8 eggs, but I didn’t include one in the video. She must have felt so slim afterwards. Thank you for your kind comment.

Ha ha... Yes, she did. Unfortunately, I have been away from that house for most of the time since I filmed this. I checked the nest site a few days ago when I was visiting, and it appeared unchanged, so I suppose there is still a small chance that I will see the young emerge on my next visit.
