This is the behind-the-scenes story of how I filmed the black roughneck monitor (Varanus rudicollis) in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน).

This is the second day of a four-day trip in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน). I spent the first day and a half walking and looking for and filming birds and insects, but my gear is very heavy, and I really fancied finding a nice location where I could set up a hide and see if anything passed by. It is always risky doing that, because you might sit for days and see nothing, but on this day, I hit the jackpot!
I had only been sitting about 90 minutes when up the river came a wonderful and very rarely seen black roughneck monitor Varanus rudicollis (เห่าช้าง) - absolutely astonishing! And then to make it even more amazing it stopped to sunbathe for over 10 minutes right in front of my hide. This is the great advantage of being in a hide. When I do see something, there is a good chance that it won't see me, so I'll get some lovely natural behaviour.... which is priceless.

Incidentally, I have been compiling a document with links to wildlife crimes in this area. Unfortunately, we have had a number of incidents this year involving macaques, the latest just a few days ago when two men were caught trying to smuggle 29 long-tailed macaques into Laos for supplying to a restaurant. Fortunately, they were caught in time, but sadly one of the macaques was already dead. I'll send you a copy of this list in due course.

Thanks Richard. Yes, it really is very exciting and gratifying when you get something from a hide. Believe me, I have spent many long days from dawn to dusk in hides without anything turning up, so a mere 90 minutes felt like I was cheating.... ha ha.

Yes, indeed. It sometimes pays off.... I once slept in a tree for four nights and stood at the base in a hide for 5 days and got a few minutes of elephant footage and two good clips of gaur. I told my friend about the location, and he stayed there for a couple of hours the next week and got 40 photos of a tiger drinking, one of which got a half page in the Bangkok Post. Its moments like that teach us about the randomness of life!!! Ha ha... but I love it all the same.

Thanks Gijs.... it was one of those very fortunate occasions. We have a lot of rain here at the moment, so I haven't been able to get out much. I can't wait to get back into the forest from about October onwards. Hope all is well with you.
