Living with the Berber women of Morocco

An incredible experience hiking and living with the nomadic Berber women in the Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Sadly many of the women and young girls that we met were illiterate and drop out of primary school early as schools are hard to get to and teach in Arabic not their indigenous Berber language. With the men leaving for up to 11 months of the year to earn money, the women are left to take care of the home, family and livestock - an incredibly physically demanding task leaving me in no doubt that the Berber women are the strongest women I have met in my life. Thank you to Hafida Hdoubane Morocco’s first ever female guide for showing us this beautiful side of the world.

    The Amazigh are made of tougher stuff than any other culture I've ever encountered, and still they are humble and kind and good-hearted.

    The Imazighen are the native people of Morocco. However, they do not only live in the Atlas mountains, in Morocco, there are still many Imazighen living in the North of Morocco, who still are very traditional in their Amazigh culture and also speak Tarifit, which is an Amazigh tongue. Area's like Nador, Al Hoceima, Tanger, Tetouan.. I myself am from Al Hoceima (Aith Wayaren tribe), and we speak Tamazight tongue that is also referred to as Tarifit. The Atlas Berbers are usually referred to as the Chleuh people.

    Berbers do not only live in the atlas mountains of morocco, they are the vast majority of the population of north africa. But most of them are arabized because of a long list of causes and circumstances. Thanks for the video.

    To be honest all people who living in the North Africa are berbers with other ethnic minorities they only forget their language and only the people who live in the mountains and the desert did not mix with the other culture. This is what made them preserve their language and culture. I would thank the woman who guided you . She gave you the correct information

    This is not true, there are "Berber" populations all over North Africa, and virtually all are genetically mixed. The majority of Berbers have a North-East African male lineage (originating somewhere in continental East-Africa, having migrated North and eventually West). The "Berber" languages predate the introgression of populations related to the Early European Farmers which first appears ~3000 ya albeit in limited amounts; however, many waves of migrants, especially from Europe and Asia-Minor have hence contributed to the gene pool throughout history. These are one population amongst many so called Berbers, and all are descendants of the original.

Same struggle, same misery but more important the same good-hearted and generous people. Big up for all Imazighen out there!!

    You are off topic! Who told about religion ? Different religions co-existed in North Africa, and a lot of Jewish morrocans were Imazighen, but when they came across Islam, they embraced it! Until today, most Muslim scholars and Imams in Morocco are Imazighen. Don't mix between ethnicity and faith

    Why outsiders have the misconception that because a certain ethnic groups don’t have their basic standards of their society they think they live bad or their life have to be miserable; it is important to accept that some group have live this way for centuries and it’s up to them to decide what their path will be for the best or worse of their people.

    Hi there I'm AMAZIGH agree is a true name; When the Roman comes in the north africa they let this name. ; Who is not roman is a Barbar. at this time. But when the arab come they stil call us Barbar; frensh they finaley translate phonetic name berberes. but In Morrocio when don;t say this name ; we call eache other by tribs we belong in it Like chleuh, rifain, Zayan, berber in frensh way is just like a nickname . Actually no body think or mean to insult when they used berber; that it's it. thank you for being so interested. I hope i satisfied your attention;

    Yes! you are AMAZIGH!!! and I was hoping that the story of the hardships that so many of these poor people suffer would be addressed instead of just accenting their strength, which is without any help from the Moroccan government... people living in caves, children walking shoeless, the majority living as Nomads, with no other options...there are many among us from all parts of the globe who have helped by sending clothing, money, and goods that they otherwise can't afford, many can only make $7-$8 daily for a full days work in the wealthy area of Morocco_ just enough to buy a meager 3 meals a day, and only for one person...the degree of suffering that the Amaziah are forced to live with, is more than heartbreaking...isn't it more than over time to tell the truth? the Amazigh can't complain, the government won't allow it, they have to keep their mouths shut for fear of being arrested...many, too many are forced to suffer in silence.
