Morocco's Village Superwomen | Al Jazeera World

Filmmaker: Bouchra Ijork
High in the Atlas Mountains in central Morocco are remote villages almost entirely dominated by Amazigh women, a result of the geographical divide between the urban and rural poor, the volatility of Moroccan agriculture and lack of regional development. Their menfolk migrate for long periods to do agricultural or city work in other parts of the country.
While the absentee men send money back home, the women are left to care for the children, tend to crops and farm animals without any outside support. "Wives can't accompany their husbands," says Fatma Kadjik, from Tiklit village, so married women have to learn to survive on their own.
In 2005, Morocco began its National Human Development Initiative Support Project with a million dollar budget aimed at improving people's living conditions and reducing poverty. By 2014, the overall poverty rate had been cut by about half, but there's still a large gap between urban and rural poverty. Literacy is also low, especially among girls, who are often unable to continue their education beyond primary school.
While life expectancy is not much lower than in Europe, harsh living conditions and poor access to healthcare affect longevity. It's a tough life for these resilient women, especially if as young girls they've been married off early.
"Imagine a girl married at the age of 13 or 14 having three or four children. At 19, she already looks 50. She's no longer beautiful and healthy," points out Saida Oukhali, from Oum Rabia.
She and her friend Aicha Jadda were both married at 16 but have since divorced, carrying a stigma in this conservative Amazigh society. "We weren't mature enough for the responsibility of marriage," says Saida. "Divorce is a big problem. You're exploited and no longer respected."
Ignoring village gossip, these young women now express themselves through music and song, where separation, hardship and women's suffering are recurring themes.
Village women with children have a heavier burden to bear. "We never rest. We keep running all day until night falls," says Fatima Kadjik, who lives with her sister-in-law, Hafida. She describes a typical day: "Hafida and I wake up at 6am to make bread and get the girls ready for school. After, I take the cow to the field to graze. Then we wash the wheat, lay it to dry and prepare lunch. By then the kids are back from school. I give the cow water and take it to graze."
Her husband, Abdellah Hasbi, acknowledges that this is difficult existence and hopes things will change for the next generation. "I'm worried about the younger generation ... Projects should be launched in this region, to create jobs for young people."
Men like Abdellah get seasonal work in farming but Moroccan agriculture is volatile and only 18 percent of the country is arable, adding to these people's vulnerability and insecurity.
While NGOs have stepped in to try and up-skill young people in of these communities - and this is the key to breaking the cycle that locks these women into such an unforgiving way of life. It might ultimately affect traditional Amazigh culture but it would more of the people of the Atlas the chance of becoming more valued members of Moroccan society as a whole.

Hope they will be spared from greed, corruption and the evil of modernity. Thank you for this beautiful documentary.

I am berber, I was born in Rabat but my family is from Tafraout south of Morocco. I have travelled extensively in Morocco because I really love nature so I meet many rural people and camped I their villages and listened to their grievances. One of the major problems they have is lack of jobs in their villages so men have to leave to the city to get a temporary jobs to meet ends need. Argicature is not enough to sustain a family. I think rural tourism could be very beneficial to these people but they training and language skills to communicate with foreign ers. We need to show them how to build small B&B using local and natural resources. They also need schools closer to the villages and better teachers. They can learn a lot from KZread if they have internet. Yes it's challenging but they're can make it they just need little help.

Thank you Aljazhera for this. Here we are in Scotland moaning about what we do not have, never thank you for what we have. We have so much. Too much. The waste, the greed, the upset for so little: traffic jams, boyfriend not looked at the new hair do, credit cards, cars and pollution, but we have hospitals and doctors, phones, water at the taps. Then we mistreat our bodies, minds with rubbish. We have jobs or benefits and pensions to care for us. We are scared of nature. Scared of hard work , manual work for which we recruit foreigners , we moan however about them for being there.

Yes, but there you have the men staying around you most of the time. The life in this video is so much better, so much more ideal, than any in Scotland or elsewhere in the West because the men are gone and keep to themselves. This eliminates most social problems even if the price is early "marriage" and hard work. At least they're mostly gone.

  • @ReflectedMiles

    @ReflectedMiles

    4 жыл бұрын

@@elena-lc4uk Partly true, partly not. Many of the most crucial natural resources from antiquity, like massive volumes of wood and common metals, were extracted from the north. When resources were taken from the countries you describe, such as oil, they were not "wealth" until such extraction was being done because those populations or their governance did not know how to utilize them, at least for that purpose. Slavery, of course, is a glaring exception as a wealth derived from labor, but that history also centers in the Middle East long before it was a major factor in US or Western European production.

However , I still feel that these people are blessed in way with a pure lifestyle, away from the depraved lifestyle that we have here in the West. There are health issues - deliveries often end up in fatalities due to the absence of Drs. and the distance to reach an hospital. Winters are merciless - we bury so many young mothers, infants and elderly folks each winter. The wolves come looming after the freshly buried bodies. Schools are miles away and with poor facilities - broken glass, wide open doors, missing rooms, no toilets...., the closest mills is miles away, no running water inside the home so despite the beautiful setting the children have to wash up in the river and bring water back into the home using plastic bottles. There is no middle school or high school and if so, only boys will be sent away to school. Girls have no options but to be mothers. This is a beautiful setting if you go with the REI gear but not when you have plastic shoes, no winter coat, carrying your toddler on your back to do chores...and never never leaving the village. Do you think these women make money? they struggle to have food on the table - so yes, POVERTY at every step of the way!!!

What a beautiful document, both the women, the scenery and the story. I really wish there will be some village projects to take on so the men will no need to leave the family and village and travel afar for works. But glad that this document make the world know about the situation, hopefully more charity organizations will start some projects here, all these women are very talented and strong, I am sure there will be a better future for all. Blessings and greetings from Australia.

2 different worlds in Morocco, you have the rich, fancy modern Casablanca with luxurious restaurants and clubs, expensive cars driving around, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel etc and than you have the other side of Morocco shown on the video. Love the contrast.

My opinion is that this community is not poor. I see some people have cattle and sheep. The major challenges that women are complaining about are absence of their husbands, and young women who got married at young age and do not further their studies. I wish Africa has one universal TV channel that give us an opportunity to learn about each other's people, culture, challenges and successes. I am watching from South Africa but I know very little about Morocco, and I guess it is the same with many other Sothern African people. I must also confess that Morocco has very beautiful women. Thank you Al Jazeera for this documentary. I always watch your TV news channel.

such an outstanding and truly reality-reflecting documantary! for your informations, those two girls Aicha and Saida who sing in the beginning of the video have became two of the best-known Amazigh-females singers in the country, known as Aicha Maya and Saida titrit. I guess that Aljazeera was their gateway to fam.
