'Not Feeling Welcome' Bikepacking the Moroccan Anti Atlas
We have a lovely start in the Anti Atlas Mountains but suddenly it turns into quite the ordeal! We get visited by the authorities and at every attempt to find a camp spot we get sent away. Finally we get escorted to a hostel which turns out to be another failure... A rough night follows and we wake up drained! Luckily the next days are much better with some beautiful places to pitch the tent, fantastic scenery and great people to accompany us on our Moroccan Odyssey to the deep south...

I think the reason WHY people are not encouraging you to tent in this area is because of the Danish girls who were murdered in the high atlas (Toubkal) in 2018 . Starting from that time, authorities in Morocco became really alerted and concerned about tourists who try to tent outdoors. As a Moroccan myself, the tragedy changed my outdoor mindset, but I still love hiking in the area and I went to Toubkal soo many times after the tragedy. People there are very generous and kind ! Have an enjoyable trip ❤

We heard about the horrible attack. People in Morocco also have told us about it and were very shocked, we also heard that the security drastically increased ever since, in hindsight that might have been the reason we were sent to a hotel that evening. It's a shame but it also makes sense that your mindset has changed. We know and experienced ourselves that the people are very generous and kind. Thanks for sharing and we wish you many more beautiful adventures to come. And stay safe! 🙏

The main reason people they don’t want to help you is that they have to report it to the authorities which are usually in another location and also they don’t want to bear the responsibility

@@Halvor1970Yeah, let's not forget them. I won't go there anymore since that happened.
We had an awesome and welcoming experience cycling in Morocco in the spring of 2017 and 2018. We cycled on the same roads as you did and mixed wild camping and paying for accommodation. We were cheerfully greeted and invited on a daily basis for tea, food, and staying in people's homes or on their land. We are very grateful for this experience and the Moroccan people we met. Then this horrifying thing happened later in 2018, which apparently and unfortunately also left its marks.
You know Netflix spend millions and millions and millions of dollars on making movies and documentaries. And the both of you are doing it all on your own and that’s travelling and living on your bike 🚴🏻. But what is really special about what you’re doing is your creating quality that shit’s all over what Netflix is pumping out…… 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Guys the quality on this video is outstanding 👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you both so much for sharing.. I've been to Morocco all Over for Filming myself 20 Years ago. I must say we experienced some Extremely Friendly and kind people in our travels throughout Morocco however they also warned us about the same things you mentioned here. Not all people are Nice. There are some Very dangerous places and situations so its nice to see the Kind People of Morocco seemed to be Very Concerned about your Safety!
I'm glad you were able to stay safe. I think it's the same everywhere. 99.9% of people are lovely but it's the 0.1% that you sometimes have to worry about. Thank you for your fantastic videos.

In the meantime I have watched many of your videos. What do I like the most? Well, thats the way you are filming, how your are building up a story. Then of course beautiful landscapes, insights into the culture of the country you are traveling to, interesting conversations with people. You are respectful of the environment, the people you meet and their culture. You're both doing that very well and convey so much optimism and joy. That would actually be contributions for television. Have you never been asked? Anyway- thank you for these extraordinary videos!

Once again, a visual and emotional masterpiece. I must admit (this Florida boy loves his trees) I can only take some much barren desert landscapes. And yet, the historian in me and the geologist in me would absolutely love to see that part of Morocco.
@Neilhuny
Жыл бұрын
Kind of with you about deserts, though they can be fascinating. Too hot for me, though I have spent months in them looking at the trees, their uses socially, medicinally, forage blah blah blah (Sahel) ... But isn't Florida excruciatingly humid in summer? Like, everything is permanently damp? Are fungal infections rife?
@WheelstoWander
Жыл бұрын
I can imagine, there's many fossil's and different types of stones and minerals to be found. We got used to the barren landscapes after a while, it very special on it's own and actually quite diverse if you look closely. Though when we got back to more green area's the smell of the trees and other plants was so distinctive. That's a moment we realized how much we missed it! 🌲

Another rich and rewarding series of spectacular images juxtaposed with the underlying currents of angst as expressed in your narrative. Interestingly I ran into some strange behaviors on my first trip was way back in 1969 when my sister and I her quasi boyfriend headed out for a three night trip from New Haven, Connecticut east up to Cape Cod, MA via Rhode Island and up to the mid-Cape and then up to Boston, MA. We had clear plastic sheets as a tent/tarp and one evening the supervisor at the state park upon learning we did not have a real tent informed us that we would need to be out of the park immediately after first light! Of course so much has changed except for my passion for exploring upon my two wheels. It is so rewarding to know this spirit of adventure lives on in so many other lives…. I look forward to more episodes of your journeys… remain vigilant and god speed …. David

Thank you! Hm, that's strange! Would it have been different if you would have a real tent? I'm not sure about the rules & regulations in the US. I know there are a lot of free parking sites for campervans, but are you allowed to camp there nowadays? I'm glad to hear your still passionate about exploring the world by bike 😊 And yes, we definitely got 'the bug' too!
Thank you for sharing your adventure, with all the work that filming entails. I love Morocco - I have been 3 times, always to wild corners of the country - in search of nature (birds in particular). One trip was different - a trek through the Jebel Sahro mountains over Xmas and NY. I’ve always been struck by the kindness and generosity of the people. And I love deserts and arid environments - they are exquisitely beautiful & peaceful, but always there is life if you look for it, and with respect. Reflecting on your experience, perhaps the filming is alienating for some cultures who want their corner of the planet to remain private.

I guess all bike tours have their good days and their tough days, but the tough ones make you appreciate the good ones all the more deeply. I'm selfishly loving the slightly longer videos in this series; more for us to enjoy, but harder for you to make. :) This one seemed slightly different from your usual style... more candid, maybe; a little "sillier" (in a good way)? I really liked it! The 360-camera shots on that downhill were incredible. Looking forward to the next one. As always, be safe!

They do, it's all about contrasts... There are high highs and sometimes low lows... And the 'lows' can definitely make you appreciate the good moments even more!
